Oyo Govt Move Against Street Vendors Blocking Walkways

The Oyo State Government has launched a fresh enforcement drive targeting traders, artisans, motor dealers, and roadside vendors who have taken over pedestrian walkways and road setbacks across the state.

The directive was issued by the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Adesagba Adekoya, a retired Army Major, during a briefing in Ibadan. He emphasized that converting walkways into business points is unlawful and contributes to traffic congestion, accidents, and general discomfort for road users.

Adekoya highlighted several hotspot areas where illegal trading has become rampant, including the University of Ibadan (U.I.) axis, Samonda, and Mokola, among others.

He stressed that traders must immediately move to designated market locations—especially as the festive season approaches—warning that violators will face fines and possible court prosecution.

The state government also praised OYRTMA for its ongoing efforts to maintain order, enhance road safety, and improve pedestrian access. Officials reiterated the administration’s commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure and ensuring safer, more organized movement across Oyo State.
