NIOB, WACL Partner to Train 1,000 Inmates and Artisans in Construction Skills

The (NIOB) has partnered with (WACL) to train 1,000 inmates and artisans in construction skills as part of efforts to tackle the shortage of skilled workers in Nigeria’s building sector.

The president of NIOB, , disclosed this during a press briefing in while commemorating the 2026 Builders’ Day celebration.

Kolade explained that the initiative, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations, is aimed at strengthening technical capacity in the construction industry by equipping artisans with practical and professional skills.

Addressing shortage of skilled artisans

According to him, while construction materials and technologies have improved significantly over the years, the success of building projects still depends largely on the competence and professionalism of artisans working on construction sites.

He noted that the industry continues to experience a shortage of adequately trained artisans, which often affects the quality and durability of building projects.

Kolade said the partnership would introduce structured training programmes designed to improve artisans’ technical knowledge, practical skills and overall workmanship.

The initiative is also expected to support national efforts to promote vocational training, improve employability and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans.

Training programme to begin soon

Kolade revealed that the first phase of the programme will begin within two weeks, with about 30 inmates selected to participate in a three-month training programme under the .

Participants will undergo various certification levels facilitated by West African Ceramics Limited, while the Nigerian Institute of Building will serve as the awarding body responsible for certification.

The managing director of West African Ceramics Limited, , described the partnership as a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian construction industry.

He emphasised that artisans play a critical role in transforming building materials into functional structures, noting that even high-quality materials require skilled craftsmanship to ensure durability and aesthetic value.

Emmanuel described the programme as a strong example of public-private collaboration in inmate rehabilitation. He added that skill acquisition programmes help inmates become productive members of society after their release.
