Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from his position. The decision takes effect immediately.
Ganduje, who served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023, said he stepped down for health reasons. In his resignation letter, he explained the need to focus on his well-being after many years in public service.
Ganduje became APC Chairman in August 2023. His time in office was marked by internal conflicts and controversy. The party faced growing pressure from members and stakeholders.
Although he cited health concerns, sources within the party suggest other reasons. Some believe rising tensions and dissatisfaction played a part in his decision to leave.
There were complaints about how Ganduje handled party finances. Reports claimed that some party members protested high financial demands from his office. In particular, candidates for the FCT area council elections said the cost of getting the party’s ticket was too high.
Ganduje also faced legal and political challenges. In April 2024, a Kano State High Court stopped him from acting as a party member. The court order came after a suit filed by some APC officials in Kano.
Although a Federal High Court in Abuja later dismissed another case seeking his removal, the episode revealed cracks within the party’s leadership.
His resignation marks a turning point for the APC. As of now, the party has not issued an official response.
Political observers say his exit may lead to a new phase for the ruling party. Many are watching closely to see who will step in as the next national chairman.
