The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to temporarily barricade the main access route to Lokogoma Estate as part of proactive flood prevention measures during the 2025 rainy season.

The decision was disclosed on Tuesday by Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the Department of Development Control, during a joint assessment visit involving key stakeholders to the flood-prone residential area.

According to Galadima, the move aims to minimize the risk of casualties and safeguard both human lives and property as heavy rains intensify. He said the FCTA is prioritizing early action this year to prevent the tragic loss of life previously witnessed in Lokogoma due to flooding.

“We are putting in place strategic interventions, including diverting both vehicular and pedestrian movement from flood-risk zones like Lokogoma. The safety of residents comes first,” Galadima stated.

He also expressed frustration over developers who have continued to build illegally on waterways, defying multiple warnings from city authorities. Galadima warned that such violations will no longer be tolerated and hinted at a possible wave of demolitions in the estate.

“We are reviewing the estate’s infrastructural layout, and structures obstructing natural water channels will be removed to allow proper drainage,” he added.

The FCTA has pledged to reopen blocked waterways and improve drainage infrastructure in the area, which has long been a hotspot for seasonal flooding.

This renewed push comes as part of a broader effort by the FCT Administration to prevent avoidable disasters during the rainy season, especially in vulnerable communities like Lokogoma, which have suffered repeated flooding incidents in recent years.
