In a grand gesture of recognition and pride, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has honoured the seven Imo-born members of Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons team and their technical crew with a cash reward of ₦30 million each and a plot of land in a prime area of Owerri.
The reception, held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Owerri, was organized to celebrate the heroic performance of the Nigerian women’s national football team, who clinched the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Morocco.
Governor Uzodimma, visibly elated, described the gesture as a tribute not just to the players’ brilliance on the pitch, but to the values of hard work, discipline, and patriotism they represent.
He said the honour was a continuation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national recognition of the team, and a move by the Imo State Government to “domesticate and celebrate the exceptional feats of our daughters.”
“Imo people are proud of our girls and will continue to support them so that more of our own can bring glory to Nigeria and honour to our State,” the Governor declared.
He further praised the team’s standout performances, especially noting that a significant portion of the squad including Africa’s top female goalkeeper hail from Imo State, a fact he said the state holds with immense pride.
Governor Uzodimma also used the opportunity to issue a clarion call to young women across the state to aspire for greatness and embrace the limitless possibilities that sports and discipline can unlock.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, commended the Governor’s unwavering commitment to sports development, describing the celebratory event as “a direct outcome of the Governor’s visionary and sustained investment in youth and sports.”
“What we are witnessing today is a clear testament to your Excellency’s belief in excellence and the transformative power of sports,” he said.
The evening was one of celebration, pride, and renewed commitment to nurturing homegrown talent, as Governor Uzodimma reaffirmed Imo State’s dedication to rewarding excellence and inspiring future champions.
