A hotel building under construction has collapsed in Idumoza community, Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing its owner, Andrew Isesere.
The tragic incident occurred last Friday while Isesere was reportedly inside the building. His body was recovered from the rubble on Sunday morning.
Eyewitnesses said more than 20 construction workers at the site narrowly escaped death.
Residents of the area revealed that they had earlier warned the late owner about the use of substandard materials in the project. According to them, Isesere used 12mm rods instead of the recommended 16mm for structural pillars and failed to install base baskets.
“There was no engineer on site,” said Andrew Inegbebor, a local resident. “The owner supervised the construction himself, and we told him the materials weren’t good enough. Sadly, the building collapsed and took his life.”
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said he had not yet been briefed on the incident as of the time of reporting.
