Residents of 5 Association Avenue, Ilupeju, Lagos, have accused their landlord of working with police officers to harass and intimidate them in an attempt to force them out without following legal procedures. The tenants say these actions violate their rights and have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
The tension reportedly escalated on June 3, 2025, when a police officer from Zone 2 Command, Onikan, allegedly pressured three tenants to sign a document in the presence of legal representatives acting for both the current and prospective property owners. One tenant, Mr. Vincent Uba, claimed the agreement ordered them to vacate the premises within two weeks to allow new buyers to begin construction.
Uba refused to sign, which he says delayed his release from police custody. He also reported growing concern for his safety, alleging that unknown individuals have been loitering around the compound. On June 4, construction materials were allegedly brought into the premises, heightening tenants’ fears of an imminent forceful takeover.
Further tension arose on June 20, when Uba said labourers arrived with a truck, attempting to enter his apartment and possibly remove his belongings. He believes their aim was to evict his family by force, an effort stopped only by the quick response of neighbors.
Another incident reportedly occurred on June 24, when three police officers entered the compound around 9:00 a.m. and arrested several individuals. Minutes later, four men claiming to be building inspectors arrived with equipment. Uba believes the arrests were orchestrated to allow these individuals access to the property.
The ongoing dispute is currently before two courts: a magistrate court and a Federal High Court, where a fundamental human rights case has been filed. Tenants are calling for legal protection, alleging that their rights are being violated through unlawful eviction attempts and intimidation.
