Lagos Urges Homeowners to Get Deed of Sub-Lease

The Lagos State Government is encouraging homeowners in its housing estates especially those who bought their properties before 2019 to collect their Deed of Sub-Lease.

This important document proves ownership of homes in government-built estates. Without it, homeowners may not be able to use their property for business, such as applying for loans or using the home as collateral.

What You Need to Know

At a recent stakeholders’ meeting held in the Ayangburen Jubilee Housing Estate, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Housing, Mr. Abdulhafis Toriola, shared this reminder with residents. Represented by the Director of the Estate Department, Mrs. Olukemi Fosudo, he stressed the need for residents to complete their home documentation.

He clarified that the Deed of Sub-Lease is different from the Letter of Confirmation. The Letter of Confirmation is only issued after a buyer agrees to the terms in the initial offer letter and finishes all payments. But the Deed of Sub-Lease gives full legal recognition to the homeowner.

Why This Matters

According to the ministry, some residents are still waiting to receive their papers, while others haven’t finished paying for their homes. Mr. Toriola advised them to visit the Ministry of Housing in Alausa for guidance and proper verification.

“We want every homeowner to feel secure and legally protected,” he said. “Your documents give you peace of mind and access to all the rights that come with property ownership.”

Final Call for Responsible Living

The government also asked residents to be more involved in maintaining order in their communities. They should follow estate rules and promote peaceful living with their neighbors.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to delivering affordable and sustainable housing to all Lagosians.
