The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a major flood alert covering 15 states and 69 communities, warning of heavy rainfall between September 24 and 28 that could trigger dangerous flooding.

The warning was issued by the Ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Centre and signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department.

“This advisory is part of our routine early warning system to prevent loss of lives and property during the peak rainy season,” the Centre said.

The affected states include Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara, with specific flood-prone communities such as Jimeta, Yenagoa, Asaba, Warri, Benin City, Kano, Iseyin, Ahoada and Gusau flagged for heightened risk.

Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most devastating annual disasters. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), as of September 20, at least 232 people have died, 121,224 displaced, and more than 339,000 affected nationwide by floods this year.

The Ministry has urged state governments, local authorities, and residents in high-risk areas to prepare by clearing drainage systems, providing temporary shelters, and disseminating safety information.

“With the rainy season in full swing, community awareness and preparedness are crucial,” the Ministry warned. “Everyone must remain vigilant and ready to respond to emergencies.”
