The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood warning for 12 states, cautioning residents to prepare for possible flooding between September 26 and 28, 2025, as heavy rains persist across the country.

According to the ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Centre, the states under alert are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Nasarawa, and Niger. Communities including Aba, Umuahia, Eket, Calabar, Abakaliki, Owerri, Daura, Birnin-Kebbi, Keana, and Sarkin Pawa were highlighted as especially vulnerable.

The ministry urged state governments, emergency agencies, and local communities to take proactive steps, including evacuating residents in high-risk zones, clearing blocked drains and waterways, and raising public awareness on safety measures.

Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, stressed that coordinated response efforts are vital to prevent loss of lives and property.

This advisory follows an earlier alert issued on September 24, which placed 15 states on watch for potential flooding along major river basins.
