A devastating rainstorm coupled with a violent hailstorm has left a trail of destruction in Kano State, claiming four lives and reducing over 1,000 homes to rubble in Kiru Local Government Area.
Raising the alarm at the Kano State House of Assembly during Monday’s plenary, Hon. Usman Tasiu — who represents the Kiru constituency — described the incident as a “community-wide tragedy,” highlighting that six towns bore the brunt of nature’s fury. These include Rahama, Yakko, Ungwan Makera, Bargoni, Dansociaya, and parts of Kiru town.

According to the lawmaker, the storm’s ferocity uprooted electricity poles, destroyed schools, markets, and shelters, and displaced hundreds of families, leaving them in dire need of aid.
The House, presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore, responded with urgency. Lawmakers unanimously called on the state government to mobilize the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for immediate intervention — with food, shelter, and rebuilding efforts identified as top priorities.
Hon. Husseini Lawan of Dala Constituency emphasized the importance of strengthening SEMA’s capacity to respond swiftly to disasters like this. His colleagues echoed the sentiment, urging prayers from religious leaders to prevent further occurrences and appealing for increased funding to reinforce local disaster preparedness.
In a related development, the Assembly also passed a motion to enhance support for vigilante groups across the state. Hon. Ali Abdullahi (Wudil Constituency) praised the efforts of these community protectors, especially in remote areas, stressing the need for better welfare and operational support to boost grassroots security efforts.
