The Kano State Government says more than 5,000 housing units are under development as part of a broader programme aimed at expanding access to homes and improving residential infrastructure across the state.

The housing initiatives form part of 22 major projects being implemented by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, with interventions extending to Kano’s 36 non-metropolitan local government areas.

Kano State has 44 local government areas, eight of which make up the metropolitan area. The 36 local governments referenced in the programme are the rural and non-metropolitan councils.

The administration said its housing agenda focuses on providing homes for low- and middle-income households, civil servants and vulnerable residents while reducing the concentration of major developments within Kano metropolis.

One component of the programme involves the proposed construction of 50 low-cost houses in each of the 36 rural local government areas, providing a projected 1,800 homes.

Other housing projects and estate-rehabilitation schemes bring the administration’s reported portfolio to more than 5,000 units across the state.

The government is also working on the rehabilitation and modernisation of existing residential developments, including Kwankwasiyya, Amana and Bandirawo mega cities.

The programme covers the Gida-Gida Mega City, a proposed 600-unit development, and a major mass-housing project at Rijiyar Gwangwan in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area.

Kano’s public procurement and project-monitoring authorities previously valued the Rijiyar Gwangwan mass-housing project at approximately ₦113.19 billion. The government also listed a ₦22 billion Rural Model City Project covering the 36 rural local governments.

The state said roads, water and electricity would be provided alongside new housing developments to ensure that residents had access to essential infrastructure.

More than 100 kilometres of roads have reportedly been constructed or incorporated into newly developed layouts under the wider housing and infrastructure programme.

The government also plans to establish police stations, security plazas, surveillance systems and an emergency operations centre within selected residential communities.

According to figures released by the administration, the housing programme is expected to generate more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Employment opportunities are projected to cover engineers, builders, artisans, suppliers, transporters and other workers within the construction and housing value chain.

The housing portfolio also includes the construction of a 48-unit commissioners’ quarters at Yan Lemo/Na’ibawa and a new headquarters for the Kano State Housing Corporation at Kwankwasiyya City.

Other related projects include new High Courts, an office for the Chief Judge, an official residence for the Chief Judge at Government House and security facilities at major entrances to Kano metropolis.

The state government said the decision to distribute housing developments across rural local governments was intended to reduce pressure on the metropolitan area and stimulate economic activity in underserved communities.

Successful implementation will depend on timely funding, transparent procurement, infrastructure delivery and the affordability of the completed homes to their intended beneficiaries.

Clear information on unit prices, eligibility requirements, allocation procedures and completion schedules will also be important in determining how effectively the programme improves access to housing.

The Kano State Government is implementing more than 5,000 housing units across the state’s 36 local government areas as part of an expanded housing and urban-development programme.

According to an account of the initiative, the housing units form part of a portfolio comprising 22 projects being coordinated by the Kano State Ministry of Housing Development under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The programme reportedly combines new housing construction with the rehabilitation of existing estates, infrastructure development and the delivery of public institutional buildings.

Its affordable-housing component is intended to serve low- and middle-income residents, civil servants and vulnerable households.

The state is also rehabilitating previously established housing schemes, including the Kwankwasiyya, Amana and Bandirawo mega cities, as well as the 600-unit Gida-Gida Mega City.

The government’s approach places emphasis on connecting new housing layouts to roads, water and electricity rather than constructing residential buildings without supporting infrastructure.

More than 100 kilometres of roads are reported to have been developed within the new layouts, while the wider programme is credited with generating over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The projects are also expected to support efforts to reduce congestion within Kano metropolis by opening new residential areas and promoting development across the local government areas.

Security facilities planned for the housing layouts include police stations, surveillance systems, security plazas and an emergency operations centre.

Other projects within the portfolio include a 48-unit Commissioners’ Quarters at Yan Lemo/Na’ibawa and proposed rural model cities across Kano’s 36 local government areas.

The government is also developing a new headquarters for the Kano State Housing Corporation at Kwankwasiyya City.

Projects connected to the judiciary include new High Courts and a Chief Justice’s Office at the Ceremonial Court, as well as an official residence for the Chief Justice at Government House.

The programme extends to the development of security plazas at six major entrances to Kano metropolis and improvements at the protocol lounge of the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.

If completed as planned, the geographic spread of the projects could help address the concentration of housing and infrastructure investment within the state capital.

Developing homes across all 36 local government areas could also support local economies, create construction jobs and reduce migration pressure on Kano metropolis.

However, the public impact of the programme will ultimately depend on the completion of the units, the affordability of the homes and the transparency of the beneficiary-allocation process.

Clear information about project costs, construction timelines, financing arrangements and eligibility requirements will also be necessary for residents and other stakeholders to assess the initiative’s long-term results.

The original account of the programme was identified by its publisher as branded content. The housing figures and performance claims should therefore be understood as information attributed to the project’s promoters and the article’s author.

(FHFL) has unveiled an ambitious plan to deliver 10,000 social housing units across Nigeria by 2030 while empowering 100,000 disadvantaged women and training 100,000 artisans under a nationwide affordable housing programme.

The initiative, contained in the institution’s Social Housing Implementation Plan obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, is aimed at expanding access to affordable housing, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable community development.

FHFL, a social housing finance institution established to improve access to affordable homes through innovative financing and strategic partnerships, said the programme would be implemented in phases across key regions of the country based on identified housing needs.

According to the implementation plan, the initiative is designed to build sustainable communities, improve livelihoods, and reduce Nigeria’s housing deficit through a combination of innovative financing models, environmentally friendly construction methods, and collaboration with both the public and private sectors.

The institution said public-private partnerships would play a critical role in mobilising funding, facilitating access to land, and strengthening institutional support required for the successful delivery of the housing projects.

As part of the programme, FHFL will provide affordable housing finance to enable more low- and middle-income Nigerians to own homes, while also increasing the supply of quality and affordable housing nationwide.

The implementation plan also places strong emphasis on environmental sustainability.

It stated that the projects would utilise Alternative Building Technology (ABT) and other low-carbon construction materials to improve efficiency, reduce construction costs, and minimise environmental impact.

The housing developments will incorporate passive cooling systems, solar energy solutions, and natural lighting to improve energy efficiency, while locally sourced building materials will be prioritised to support domestic industries and stimulate economic growth.

Beyond housing delivery, the programme aims to drive inclusive economic development by empowering 100,000 disadvantaged women through employment and entrepreneurship opportunities created within the housing value chain.

In addition, 100,000 artisans will receive training in modern construction skills to strengthen the country’s skilled workforce, improve housing delivery, and expand employment opportunities in the construction sector.

FHFL also said host communities would be actively involved in the planning and implementation of projects to encourage local ownership, enhance sustainability, and ensure the long-term success of the developments.

The institution added that governance structures would be strengthened, while livelihood programmes would be integrated into the housing estates to improve residents’ quality of life.

According to the document, the social housing programme aligns with Nigeria’s national housing policies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To improve affordability and accelerate implementation, FHFL said it would leverage grants, subsidies, and partnerships with development finance institutions to complement private sector investment.

The institution expressed confidence that the programme would significantly reduce Nigeria’s housing deficit while promoting inclusive growth, strengthening local capacity, creating jobs, and improving living standards across participating communities.

FHFL reiterated that its mission remains providing affordable homes and creating employment opportunities by leveraging innovative financing, technology, strategic partnerships, and a skilled workforce to improve housing access for Nigerians.

The institution added that the initiative is expected to contribute to economic growth through infrastructure development, job creation, and expanded access to decent and affordable housing for low- and middle-income households.

The announcement comes as the country prepares for a major party meeting this month.

Final Phase in Hwasong District Underway
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the fifth and final stage, which involves 10,000 housing units in the Hwasong district, is currently in its interior finishing phase. The project is part of a five-year plan initiated by leader Kim Jong-un at the eighth congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in January 2021, aimed at addressing housing shortages in the capital.

Earlier phases saw 10,000 units built in Songsin and Songhwa districts in 2022, followed by 40,000 units completed across four stages in the northeastern Hwasong district. The completion of this final stage marks a significant milestone in Pyongyang’s urban development agenda.

Preparations for the Ninth Party Congress
KCNA highlighted the project’s near completion as North Korea accelerates preparations for the ninth party congress, expected in February, according to South Korean intelligence sources. The upcoming congress is anticipated to unveil another five-year plan outlining the country’s key economic and policy priorities, building on the 2021 economic development agenda.

Regional Development Projects in Focus
In addition to the housing initiative, the Rodong Sinmun reported that construction of a greenhouse farm in Sinuiju, northwestern North Korea, is nearing completion. Leader Kim Jong-un recently inspected regional factories in Sinyang and Pukchang, urging that they be inaugurated by December. These efforts are framed as part of a “gigantic revolution” to improve livelihoods and promote regional development across the country.

Implications for Pyongyang and Beyond
The housing project and associated infrastructure initiatives reflect North Korea’s continued emphasis on urban development and self-sufficiency ahead of key political events. Observers note that completing large-scale projects before major party meetings is consistent with Kim Jong-un’s pattern of showcasing economic and social achievements to reinforce political legitimacy.

Lagos State is working to close its housing gap with an ambitious plan to complete over 14,000 homes by 2026.

This announcement came during the 75th World Congress of the International Real Estate Federation, held at Eko Hotels and Suites.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Housing Commissioner, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the state had already completed nearly 10,000 housing units over the past six years. Now, the focus is on doing even more.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the government has put strategies in place to boost affordable housing. These efforts are meant to help low- and middle-income residents find decent homes. To support this push, the state created a better environment for private investors and increased its housing budget. These steps aim to attract more developers and also grow the economy by creating jobs in the construction sector.

The governor said that housing is about more than just shelter. It is also a tool to build stable communities and boost long-term economic development.

In 2025, the state plans to spend N101.6 billion on housing and community projects. That is a big jump from the N55.92 billion allocated in 2024. The housing portion makes up about 3% of the state’s total N3.366 trillion budget.

The state has also launched programs to make home ownership easier. One of them is the Rent-To-Own plan. It allows first-time buyers to move in after paying only 5% up front.

The rest of the cost is paid monthly over ten years. To qualify, applicants must live in Lagos, pay taxes, and prove that monthly payments will not exceed one-third of their income. Another program, Lagos HOMS, gives people the option to contribute up to 30% up front, with the rest paid over ten years. Both programs limit payments to 30% of the buyer’s income and do not allow subletting. Applications go through a draw system to keep the process fair.

Lagos is also partnering with banks to build new homes. In late 2024, the state signed a deal with Access Bank to develop a housing estate in Ikorodu. The Odonla-Odugunyan estate will sit on nearly 10 hectares and include 704 two-bedroom units spread across 44 buildings.

With these steps, the Lagos State Government hopes to reduce its housing shortage and give more people the chance to own a home.
