The Rivers State Government has issued a firm warning to developers, urging them to avoid using substandard materials in construction projects.

This comes in response to the recent collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Iriebe, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The government has initiated an investigation to uncover the cause of the collapse.

On Wednesday, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi, visited the site, accompanied by officials from the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority and directors from the Ministry. Bipi reported that, fortunately, no lives were lost during the early morning collapse on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. However, he emphasized the importance of using quality materials and warned developers against cutting corners.

“It is unfortunate that this building lacked the necessary government approval, which is crucial to ensuring structural integrity and safety,” Bipi stated. “While we are grateful that no lives were lost, we intend to investigate the building’s engineer and owner to determine our next course of action.”

Click Here To Become A Member Of The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN)

According to Bipi, initial findings suggest that the structure’s failure may have been due to substandard materials, including inadequate cement-sand ratios. “The negligence shown here endangers lives,” he said. “Building standards must be upheld to prevent future tragedies.”

Bipi reminded property owners and developers of the requirement to obtain government-approved building plans, which facilitate regular inspections and ensure adherence to safety regulations. He also reiterated the state’s commitment to reducing incidents of structural failures through increased oversight and enforcement.

In response to the incident, the Rivers State Government has sealed off the collapsed site pending the outcome of a joint investigation by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority. This investigation aims to address the prevalent issues within the building industry and ensure improved safety standards across the state.
