First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has commissioned the Muhammadu Buhari Estate and Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The housing estate has 108 units. It sits along the Oke-Mosan-Kobape Express Road. Senior government officials and housing sector stakeholders attended the commissioning.

Ogun Expands Housing Supply

Speaking at the event, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun said the projects would support better living conditions for residents.

The governor said the state must keep working to address its housing needs. He added that his administration would continue to provide affordable homes until the end of its tenure.

According to Abiodun, government projects should improve the lives of citizens. He said people need safe homes, basic services and an environment that allows them to build better lives.

The governor also linked the new estate to the state’s wider housing programme. He said the project shows the government’s commitment to providing decent and affordable homes.

Housing remains a major issue for Nigeria’s growing urban centres. As more people move to cities, the demand for homes, roads, water, power and other services also increases. Therefore, housing projects must go alongside wider infrastructure planning.

Estate Targets Different Income Groups

Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Akande Omoniyi, thanked the First Lady for her support during the development of the estate.

Omoniyi said the first phase of the project would serve low-, medium- and high-income earners. He also said the estate would help the state increase its housing supply.

In addition, the commissioner said the Ministry of Housing would continue to support projects that promote decent and sustainable housing.

The location of the estate also adds to the wider development of Abeokuta. Housing projects along major transport routes can support access to jobs, schools, health facilities and other services when authorities plan them alongside urban infrastructure.

Medical Centre Commissioned

Abiodun also highlighted the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence during the event.

He said Ogun had invested in strengthening primary healthcare centres across the state. The governor added that the new medical facility would improve access to quality healthcare.

According to him, healthcare should remain available to all citizens, regardless of their income.

He also said the centre could help reduce the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for medical treatment.

First Lady Launches Food Bank Programme

During her visit, Tinubu also launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-West.

The programme covers Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states. It will provide food support to vulnerable households and people facing hardship.

Tinubu said the programme aims to improve access to nutritious food. It will focus on children below six years, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

The initiative forms part of the Renewed Hope Initiative and supports the Federal Government’s efforts on food security and nutrition.

The programme also included the distribution of food items to vulnerable and indigent residents across the South-West.

Bank of Agriculture to Support Programme

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, praised Tinubu’s work on nutrition and food security.

Pate said good nutrition plays an important role in the health of mothers, newborns and children. He also called for stronger partnerships to support the food bank programme.

The minister further praised Ogun State for developing the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence. He said the facility shows how state governments can improve health infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Bank of Agriculture Managing Director Ayo Sotinrin said the bank would support the food bank’s financial and supply chains.

The bank will manage programme funds and buy food from approved local farmers and aggregators. It will also provide agricultural financing where needed and support accountability.

Sotinrin urged businesses, governments, institutions and individuals to support the programme.

Wider Housing and Infrastructure Impact

The commissioning brings housing, healthcare and social support into the same development conversation.

For Ogun State, increasing the supply of decent homes remains important as urban areas expand. At the same time, residents need access to healthcare, food and other basic services.

Residents of Ikangba Community in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State have asked Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene in a land dispute that they say threatens peace in the area.

The community made the appeal in Abeokuta. It accused some individuals of trying to take control of its ancestral land through intimidation. It also alleged that some security personnel had become involved in the dispute.

Prince Oluleye Olufemi Oluleye, Secretary of the Ikangba community, presented the community’s statement. He urged the governor to act quickly before the dispute leads to more violence.

Community Seeks Government Intervention

The community said security agencies had already taken steps to address the dispute.

According to the residents, two Ikangba indigenes were earlier arrested and detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) office in Abeokuta. The two men were later released after the community presented documents supporting its claim to the land.

The residents said DSS officials heard from both sides and reviewed the circumstances of the dispute. They said the agency then warned all parties against actions that could disrupt peace in the community.

However, the community alleged that the people it accused of land grabbing continued their activities after leaving the DSS office.

The residents also said the Ogun State Commissioner of Police intervened in the matter. According to the community, the commissioner invited the parties and heard their positions before warning those it described as land grabbers to stay away from the disputed property.

Residents Allege Fresh Threats

Despite these interventions, the community said tensions had continued.

The residents alleged cases of harassment, maiming and sporadic shootings around the disputed land. They said the incidents had created fear and raised concerns about the safety of people living in the area.

The community also raised concerns over the alleged involvement of the Idowa traditional institution. It specifically mentioned the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adefuwape.

The Ikangba people stressed that they were not asking the government or security agencies to decide the ownership of the land outside the legal process.

Instead, they want the authorities to conduct a full and impartial investigation. They also want all parties to receive protection while the competent authorities determine the ownership and status of the property.

Appeal to Security Agencies

The community asked Governor Abiodun to prevent the use of security personnel or private agents to intimidate any party involved in the dispute.

It also appealed to the DSS and the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that their personnel do not become involved in private land disputes.

The residents further called on the Ogun State Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force, the police, DSS and other relevant agencies to act quickly.

They said urgent action could help prevent further violence and protect lives and property.

Wider Impact on Real Estate

The dispute also highlights the importance of secure land ownership in Nigeria’s property market.

The Ogun State Government has announced plans to demolish and reconstruct the state’s legislative and commissioners’ quarters, which were originally built in 1976.

According to Jamiu Omoniyi, the Commissioner for Housing, a recent technical evaluation revealed that the structures have become unsafe and uneconomical to maintain despite several repairs over the years.

Omoniyi said the decision complies with the National Building Code of Nigeria (2006), which mandates that public buildings meet minimum safety standards.

“The existing quarters were constructed nearly 50 years ago. Over time, maintenance efforts have proven inadequate, and the buildings are no longer fit for habitation,” he stated.

He added that the new quarters would feature modern, energy-efficient designs and upgraded utilities as part of the state’s broader urban renewal and housing development plan.

The commissioner described the initiative as a long-term investment in safety and administrative efficiency, emphasizing that the project would prioritize transparency and local job creation through the engagement of indigenous contractors.

The Ogun State Government has issued a seven-day quit notice to the management of the Ibara Housing Estate Mosque in Abeokuta, warning that the over 25-year-old structure may be demolished.

The notice, dated November 5, 2025, was signed by the General Manager of the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority and directed the mosque community to vacate the premises within one week. It also stated that the government would not be responsible for any loss or damage during the demolition.

Part of the notice read: “You are hereby informed to vacate the property within seven days from the date of service of this notice. Remove all valuables within the specified time. The Authority will not be liable for any claim or compensation for properties damaged or destroyed during the demolition.”

Officials reportedly served the notice shortly after the Zuhr (noon) prayers, which caused concern among worshippers who described the action as sudden and unfair.

Findings showed that the mosque had not previously received any formal warning or contravention notice. However, a separate document titled “Notice of Contravention,” signed by the same General Manager, was also delivered on the same day.

The contravention notice alleged that the mosque had changed its use from residential to public worship and had carried out development without official approval. It ordered the management to submit all relevant planning documents, including development permits, within 24 hours or restore the property to its original residential purpose within seven days.

The authority cited violations of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, warning that failure to comply would result in demolition after due process.

Members of the mosque community have appealed to the government to reconsider the decision and engage in dialogue to resolve the matter peacefully.

The former Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the University of Lagos, Professor Leke Oduwaye, has described town planners as “prophets” of housing and urban development, emphasizing that strategic planning is essential to prevent uncoordinated growth and costly demolitions. Speaking at the 2025 Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Ogun State Chapter, held in Abeokuta, Oduwaye stressed the need for forward-thinking settlement planning to ensure sustainable urban expansion.

The meeting, which carried the theme “Conflicting Rationalities: The Challenge of Urban and Physical Development in Nigeria,” brought together key stakeholders in the built environment to reflect on the growing complexities of urban growth in Nigeria. According to Oduwaye, the role of the planner is predictive and preventive. “Planners are like prophets,” he said. “They envision what settlements should become using knowledge, theory, and legal frameworks that guide development.”

He warned that Ogun State, one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing regions, risks slipping into urban chaos if it continues to expand without comprehensive and well-funded spatial planning. “It doesn’t cost much to plan. Government can start small—perhaps one town per senatorial district—allocating funds annually for the development of master plans,” he suggested. Oduwaye also pointed to several underlying factors driving disjointed development, including political interference, lack of funding, the presence of unqualified practitioners, and ethnic influences. He proposed reforms such as a streamlined “one-desk system” for planning approvals, land swap models to fund consultancy services, and the development of bankable master plans that could attract private sector support.

In his remarks, the Chairman of NITP Ogun State Chapter, Tpl. Adefela Sogbesan, addressed a widespread public misconception that town planners are responsible only for demolition activities. “There’s a belief that planners are out to demolish buildings,” he said. “But with proper professional input from the beginning, buildings will be sited correctly, eliminating the need for demolition entirely.”

Representing the Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tpl. Olatunji Odunlami, senior official Mr. John Olutunde reiterated the government’s commitment to updating housing and urban planning laws to align with evolving realities. He commended the institute’s efforts and assured participants of the state’s ongoing support for professional planning initiatives.

The meeting closed with a collective call for more transparent planning processes, improved public education, and enhanced collaboration among government agencies, professionals, and communities to safeguard Nigeria’s urban future.

The Ogun State Government has charged two traditional rulers with land grabbing, vowing to curb illegal land seizures regardless of status.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), said on Tuesday that the Onijoko of Ijoko Ota, Oba Fatai Matanmi, and the Olu of Orile-Igbon, Igbesa, Oba Yusuff Olasunkanmi, are facing charges of “forceful takeover of land and forcible entry contrary to law.”

According to the state, Oba Matanmi allegedly resold land previously bought by a late Madam Irokosu in 1976, and later harassed the complainant who had lawfully purchased it in 2016. “Although this claim was bogus, the complainant paid N5,000,000 to Oba Matanmi to let peace reign, but the Oba continued to harass the complainant,” the statement said, adding that the matter is before HCT/84R/2025: The State v. Oba Fatai Matanmi.

Oba Olasunkanmi is accused of using a judgment against third parties to unlawfully appropriate land more than a kilometre from the judgment area, allegedly displacing legitimate occupants. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

The government also charged Chief Lekan Agbogun and Chief Akinbowale Beckley for allegedly selling another person’s property in Abeokuta to an overseas buyer without title documents, despite an existing building on the land.

“While these defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the state has filed these charges as a further demonstration of its commitment to tackling land grabbing,” Ogungbade said. “No matter the personalities involved, where the facts warrant, the state will resist and redress all land-grabbing actions that come to its notice.”
