The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has condemned the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company’s (AEDC) recent dismissal of 800 workers, calling the move a breach of agreements reached with the unions.

According to the union, the restructuring exercise, which AEDC claimed was aimed at improving customer service and operational efficiency, failed to follow the principles of mutual trust and collaboration agreed upon with union representatives.

AEDCstated that the exercise targeted high-performing staff for promotion while releasing retirees and employees who reportedly underperformed, as part of its ongoing corporate transformation to become more agile and customer-focused.

However, NUEE’s Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, described the scale of the layoffs as excessive and insensitive given the current economic situation and existing manpower shortages in the company. He called for a full review of the restructuring exercise in line with the Memorandum of Understanding with the unions.

“The number involved is unacceptably high considering the economic realities and the workforce gap within AEDC. Some employees listed for retrenchment should not have been affected,” Igwebike said. He also suggested that claims of underperformance may stem from inadequate tools and a lack of a conducive work environment.

The union further warned that younger employees were disproportionately affected, noting that over 60 percent of those sacked fall within the youth category, raising concerns about the long-term social and economic impact on households and communities. Igwebike also alleged that the exercise appeared to target union officials, with more than 70 percent of union leaders across AEDC’s four state councils and 21 chapters affected.

NUEE demanded a detailed review of all affected staff, including a “line-by-line audit of performance records and disciplinary history,” and requested the establishment of a joint committee with AEDC to oversee the appeals and mitigation process.

“While the union remains committed to protecting workers’ rights, we urge AEDC management to harness the potential of its workforce to achieve the desired productivity,” Igwebike added.

The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) has given AEDC a two-week deadline to settle outstanding benefits, including unpaid productivity bonuses from 2024, 18 months of unremitted pension deductions, and the failure to implement the national minimum wage. According to a letter dated June 4, 2025, and signed by SSAEAC’s deputy general secretary, Rosemary Odey, the union expressed concern over management’s failure to meet commitments made as far back as November 2024, despite a notable increase in company revenue—now reportedly over ₦98 billion.

The situation has been further intensified by a parallel move from the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), which has announced the resumption of a suspended strike. In a separate notice dated June 3, 2025, NUEE cited a similar list of unresolved issues, including non-remittance of pension and tax deductions, lack of promotions for over a decade, and the deterioration of staff health care due to unpaid medical expenses.

Both unions underscored that despite the challenges, AEDC workers have helped grow the company’s revenue by more than ₦95 billion in just three months. They argue that this performance has come at a cost, as many employees have worked under difficult conditions with limited resources.

The strike warning signals deepening unrest within the company. If unresolved, the actions could lead to widespread power outages across AEDC’s service regions. The unions have vowed to fully mobilize their members and sustain the strike until all demands are met, calling on company leadership to address the concerns urgently to avoid disruption of critical electricity services.

A new report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reveals that consumers left N71.53 billion unpaid during that single month.

Across the country, 12 electricity distribution companies, known as DisCos, were only able to collect N178.68 billion out of the N250.21 billion they billed. This gap highlights the growing cash flow crisis in the power sector.

Take Aba Power, for example. The company billed customers N5.79 billion but only collected N2.43 billion. Abuja DisCo issued N32.61 billion in bills but received just N24.82 billion.

Eko DisCo billed N42.03 billion and recovered N36.01 billion. Ikeja DisCo also had a shortfall, collecting N32.81 billion from a total of N44.02 billion.

Benin DisCo brought in N17.53 billion from N23.24 billion. Ibadan DisCo managed N21.84 billion from N29.57 billion in billed power. Enugu DisCo only collected N13.85 billion out of N17.33 billion.

Jos DisCo’s collections stood at N4.3 billion from N10.02 billion. Kaduna DisCo fared even worse, pulling in just N3.06 billion from N7.75 billion.

Kano DisCo’s customers paid N7.08 billion out of N12.47 billion. Port Harcourt DisCo received N12.56 billion from the N21.03 billion it billed. Finally, Yola DisCo collected N2.34 billion out of N4.33 billion.

These figures reveal more than just missed payments. They show a deeper problem within Nigeria’s electricity industry. In fact, the revenue collected in January dropped by 3.29 percent compared to December 2024.

This decline adds more pressure to a sector already battling liquidity issues. To make matters worse, the federal government owes over N2 trillion in subsidies to power firms for the previous year.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has raised concerns about this growing debt. He noted that another N1.9 trillion in subsidy for 2024 remains unpaid. DisCos are also awaiting N450 billion from this year’s subsidy.

Speaking about the issue, Adelabu asked a critical question: “How do you expect the GenCos to perform optimally? How do you expect them to pay for gas, service and maintain their turbines, and even pay staff if a total of N4 trillion is being owed to them?”

The entire sector is caught in a vicious cycle. Consumers are not paying enough. Operators are low on funds. And the government is struggling to meet its financial obligations.

As the debts mount, the future of electricity in Nigeria looks increasingly uncertain. Without urgent reform and better financial discipline, the lights may not stay on for long.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Wednesday, AEDC explained that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is working to repair the underground transmission line that was vandalized near Millennium Park in Abuja.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria has assured us that restoration efforts are actively ongoing, with its engineers working day and night to replace and reconnect the damaged cable,” the statement read. “TCN has committed to completing the work and restoring normal power supply to the Central Area Transmission Substation (AT5) on February 23, 2025.”

The prolonged power outage, which has affected various parts of the FCT, including Wuye, Utako, Jabi, Mabushi, Katampe Districts, Life Camp, Wuse Zones 1-7, Wuse 2, Maitama, and parts of the Central Business District, was caused by the vandalization of the 132kV Katampe–Central Area underground transmission cable.

AEDC acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the disruption and appealed for patience from affected residents, adding that “load management will be implemented to optimize available supply” while repair work continues.

Meanwhile, AEDC disclosed that 188 locations within the FCT experienced power outages between January 1 and February 11, 2025, due to various technical faults affecting its feeders. A review of 26 public notices posted on the company’s X handle showed that multiple areas, including Garki, Kubwa, Banex Plaza, and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters, have been affected.

The company assured residents that its technical team is working tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible, stating, “We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appeal for your patience.”

The judge specifically granted Falana leave to obtain a writ of mandamus compelling the electricity company to provide detailed information regarding its compliance with the commitment to supplying a minimum of 20 hours of uninterrupted power per day to the Band “A” category of customers.

The judge’s decision followed an urgent ex-parte application filed and argued by a lawyer, Tope Alabi, from Falana & Falana Chambers.

The motion was backed by a 14-paragraph affidavit sworn by a legal officer from the NBA Ikeja, Titilayo Omolasho.

The affidavit stated that in April 2024, Ikeja Electric Plc categorised customers into bands – Bands “A,” “B,” “C,” and “D” – and began implementing these categories immediately, along with corresponding high tariffs.

Omolasho also claimed that Falana was placed in Band “A,” which had a financial implication of N225 per kWh, later reduced to N206.80 per kWh on May 6, 2024.

She also argued that since initiating the Band “A” classification and committing to provide 20 hours of uninterrupted power supply per day, Ikeja Electric has failed to deliver this service.

Omolasho further stated in the affidavit that Falana had requested information from the company in a letter dated May 24, 2024, regarding compliance with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) directive to provide 20 hours of electricity to Band “A” customers.

She claimed that the respondent has since failed, refused or neglected to provide the requested detailed information and has given no reason for this refusal till the time of filing this report

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed that the incident occurred along the Menillum Park axis, where vandals damaged the 132kV underground transmission line and stole a 40-meter-long 1x500mm XLPE conductor. This cable is essential for transporting bulk electricity to the Central Area transmission substation in Katampe, which supplies power to the affected areas.

In a statement on Friday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the vandalism has impacted eight distribution feeders, disrupting over 60% of Abuja’s electricity supply.

“Areas experiencing power outage include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Life Camp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa,” Mbah noted.

Efforts are already underway to restore power as TCN engineers have been dispatched to repair the damage. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) also confirmed the outage in a notice to customers, listing affected areas such as Federal Secretariat, Wuse Zones 1-7, Central Area, and parts of Garki and Jabi districts.

Mbah expressed concern over the rising cases of cable vandalism, which she said continue to disrupt power delivery across the country. She appealed to residents to remain patient as repair efforts are carried out and urged the public to stay vigilant to safeguard critical infrastructure.

The AEDC reiterated its commitment to resolving the outage promptly and assured customers of updates as repairs progress.
