The Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja has recorded over ₦700 million in revenue just three weeks after reopening, following a major rehabilitation.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, revealed the development during a thanksgiving service in Abuja, celebrating the successful completion of infrastructure projects commissioned to mark President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.

According to the minister, the revenue surge contrasts sharply with previous years, during which the facility generated only ₦50 million annually under its former management. He emphasized that the upgrade has transformed the centre into a world-class venue capable of hosting high-level international events and generating substantial income for the FCT Administration.

The facility was refurbished at a cost of ₦39 billion, a move that initially drew public criticism. However, the significant early returns from its operations appear to signal a shift in public perception about the investment.

Wike noted that the transformation aligns with the broader goals of enhancing the capital’s infrastructure while creating new streams of internally generated revenue to support development in the territory.

Upon his arrival, he proceeded directly to the formal commissioning of the newly refurbished Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC).

In a symbolic gesture during the event, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced the renaming of the iconic facility to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, citing the President’s commitment to national development and infrastructure renewal.

Wike described the upgraded centre as a state-of-the-art venue that requires careful maintenance, stressing that usage fees would now apply uniformly to all users, regardless of social or political status. He emphasized the need for sustainable upkeep of public assets and disclosed that maintenance contracts would be directly handled by Julius Berger, the company responsible for the rehabilitation.

The commissioning marks a major milestone in the FCT administration’s infrastructure upgrade efforts. Tinubu, who was welcomed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by senior officials including Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, proceeded immediately to the ICC from the airport.

While in Lagos, the President had engaged with dignitaries across sectors and commissioned several strategic projects to mark his second anniversary in office.

The rebranding and inauguration of the ICC are seen as part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to enhance public infrastructure, promote institutional legacy, and strengthen Abuja’s profile as a conference and diplomatic hub.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced that the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC) will officially resume operations on June 10, 2025, following a comprehensive renovation project.

The announcement came after Wike’s inspection tour of several key infrastructure projects in Abuja, including the Outer Southern Expressway leading to Wassa and ongoing road construction in Gishiri. The Minister confirmed that preparations are in their final stages and that the ICC will be ready for use immediately after its formal commissioning.

The ICC had been temporarily closed in April 2024 for extensive refurbishment. At the time, the FCT administration cancelled all scheduled events and terminated the management contract with Integrated Facility Management Services Limited due to what was described as prolonged neglect and poor facility upkeep.

Renovation works were reassigned to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with the construction firm handling major upgrades across the facility. As part of a new strategy, Wike stated that the FCT administration is finalizing an agreement to retain Julius Berger for long-term maintenance responsibilities. This approach, he noted, is aimed at addressing persistent challenges in sustaining public infrastructure across the country.

“Maintenance has always been a weak point. We’re changing that narrative,” Wike said. “This time, the same company that built and upgraded the facility will also be in charge of its upkeep. We’re keeping politics out of it.”

He added that the facility’s upgraded systems, including modern technologies installed during the renovation, would not pose operational difficulties. According to the Minister, existing staff will be supported with the necessary training and technical assistance.

Wike also stressed that any future users of the ICC would contribute to its maintenance through usage fees, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the facility.

The refurbished ICC, which has historically hosted high-profile national and international events, is expected to play a vital role in revitalizing Abuja’s conference and tourism appeal.
