High-Resolution Aerial Data for Urban Planning

Surveyor General Abduganiyu A. Adebomehin revealed that this initiative, the first of its kind in Africa, will analyze building footprints, locations, and road networks.

PLACE aerial data offers a ground sample distance (GSD) of 5 cm, significantly sharper than commercial satellite imagery, which typically has a GSD of 40-50 cm.

Advanced Mapping for Public and Private Sectors

Unlike Google and Apple’s satellite data, PLACE aerial imaging provides superior resolution for mapping property boundaries, land use, economic activity, and population distribution.

The project will also collect anonymized street-level data to enhance urban planning, infrastructure development, and automated road classification using machine learning models.

Unlocking New Economic and Technological Opportunities

PLACE team leader Frank Pichel highlighted the benefits of 3D City View technology, emphasizing its role in improving government services and business opportunities.

The initiative is expected to transform urban development, from monitoring environmental changes to expanding and optimizing road networks in Nigeria’s capital.
