Governor Umo Eno has donated a fully furnished three-bedroom house to a homeless mother of triplets in Uyo, offering relief to a family previously grappling with extreme hardship.

The beneficiaries, Mr and Mrs Sunday Ekpo from Ifa Ikot Okpon community, received the new home alongside a business support grant, marking a significant turnaround in their living conditions.

The presentation was carried out on behalf of the governor by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Emem Ibanga, who handed over the house documents and financial support during a brief ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Governor Eno congratulated the family and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable residents through targeted social intervention programmes.

He described the gesture as a reflection of compassionate governance, noting that the birth of the triplets had drawn attention to the family’s plight and prompted swift government action.

In his remarks, the Presiding Pastor of the All Nations Christian Ministry International, Pastor Udomfuk Ndaeyo, commended the governor for what he described as a demonstration of genuine compassion and responsive leadership.

The Akwa Ibom State Government has disclosed that it has delivered no fewer than 1,048 housing units across the state within three years under the administration of Governor Umo Eno.

The Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Ummanah, made the disclosure in Uyo during a live radio programme, noting that the housing projects cut across multiple sectors and target groups.

According to him, the delivered units include 438 Compassionate Homes, 230 units at Grace Estate, 100 units in Aviation Village, and another 100 units designated as Medical Residences within the Medical City.

He added that other completed projects comprise 64 units for House of Assembly and Executive Council quarters, 50 units for the judiciary, 35 units at Ewet Luxury Garden, and 31 residences for local government chairmen.

Ummanah described the development as a major milestone in the state’s housing sector, stressing that it aligns with the administration’s broader development blueprint.

He explained that housing delivery remains a key component of the ARISE Agenda, which outlines priority areas for governance and infrastructure development in the state.

The commissioner further revealed that more than 150 civil servants on Grade Levels 1 to 7 have benefited from government-provided housing, offered at no cost to support low-income earners.

In addition, he disclosed that 355 vulnerable residents have already received homes under the ARISE Compassionate Housing Scheme, out of the 438 units completed so far, against a target of 500 beneficiaries.

He also noted that plans are underway to deliver an additional 150 townhouse units along the reclaimed Uyo Village Road axis as part of ongoing efforts to expand housing access.

Ummanah said the initiative is designed to reduce the housing deficit, stimulate economic growth, and promote sustainable urban development across the state.

The government maintains that the programme will continue to scale up housing delivery to meet the growing demand among residents.

Tensions have escalated between communities in Akwa Ibom State following a dispute over the ownership of a seaport located within the Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone.

The conflict involves residents of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area and Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, both laying claim to the land where the facility is situated.

Crisis Deepens After Arrival of Ships

The dispute intensified over the weekend after ships berthed at the port, prompting celebrations among residents of Ikot Abasi.

However, the situation quickly deteriorated when youths from Eastern Obolo protested the development, threatening action over what they described as an attempt to wrongly attribute the project’s location.

Under the aegis of the Obolo Youth Coalition, the group warned that it would resist any continued claims that undermine their territorial ownership.

Eastern Obolo Youths Reject Ikot Abasi Claims

In a communiqué signed by its leaders, the group insisted that the seaport is entirely located within Eastern Obolo territory.

They accused some reports and stakeholders of spreading misleading information by attributing the project to Ikot Abasi, describing such claims as provocative and unacceptable.

According to the group, the misrepresentation undermines their community’s heritage and economic recognition tied to the seaport project.

Ikot Abasi Group Fires Back

In a swift response, the Ukpum Ete Unity Association, representing interests in Ikot Abasi, dismissed the claims as inaccurate and historically flawed.

The group argued that historical records, including a 1945 judgment, support their claim that the land belongs to the Ukpum Ete clan in Ikot Abasi.

They maintained that administrative changes, such as the creation of local government areas, do not alter original land ownership.

Calls for Government Intervention

Both groups have called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to intervene, warning that the dispute could threaten peace in the area if not urgently addressed.

While Eastern Obolo youths warned against continued “encroachment,” the Ikot Abasi group urged authorities to take action against what it described as attempts to incite unrest.

The Federal Government has officially granted Uyo Airport (Victor Attah International Airport) international status, allowing it to receive and process international passengers.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a visit to Uyo where he hosted Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State.

The minister confirmed that the airport possesses the necessary modern facilities, including a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and a runway exceeding three kilometres, capable of accommodating larger aircraft.

“With these facilities in place, there is no reason why Uyo Airport should not operate internationally,” Keyamo said. “We are assembling a joint team of government agencies, including Customs, NiMet, FAAN, NCAA, to oversee the transition from local to international operations.”

The minister added that the next step is to tick all regulatory boxes and set a date for full international operations to begin.

Government Plans and Infrastructure Development

Responding to the announcement, Governor Umo Eno expressed gratitude and highlighted state plans to complement the airport’s international upgrade. He said the government would build a cargo terminal and residential facilities for airport staff, creating a full ecosystem around the airport.

“Our target is that by the end of the first quarter of 2026, the first international flight will take off from Uyo,” Eno stated.

The Victor Attah International Airport, formerly known as Akwa Ibom International Airport, is situated near Uyo, the state capital. The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has launched the construction of the Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to reduce Nigeria’s housing deficit.

The groundbreaking ceremony was performed by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, and attended by the FHA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oyetunde Ojo.

In a statement by the FHA’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Chigelu, Ojo praised Governor Eno for his commitment to the welfare of Akwa Ibom residents, especially in the area of housing provision.

Ojo recalled the governor’s early support for the initiative, noting that the state government provided land for the project at no cost and pledged continuous collaboration to ensure its success.

He said, “When we met with His Excellency in May 2024 to seek Akwa Ibom’s partnership in the Renewed Hope Housing agenda, the reception and encouragement we received were unmatched. Launching this project here is our way of reciprocating that goodwill.”

The FHA boss explained that the Renewed Hope Housing Programme represents the fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s pledge to deliver affordable and livable homes to Nigerians. He added that the agency has completed procurement processes for similar housing projects in Kaduna, Abia, Ogun, Ekiti, Kogi, and Adamawa States.

According to Ojo, the Federal Housing Authority has also been completing and commissioning inherited projects in line with President Tinubu’s directive that “the days of abandoned projects are over.”

He described the Akwa Ibom project as more than a housing estate, but “a livable and affordable community that will create jobs, stimulate local industries, and promote inclusive development.”

In his remarks, Governor Eno thanked the President and the FHA for selecting Akwa Ibom as one of the flagship sites for the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.

He reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to partner with the Federal Government in addressing the state’s housing needs and disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development had also received 50 hectares of land for its own housing initiative.

“Our civil servants are dear to us, which is why we are investing heavily in housing projects such as the Aviation City, Judicial City, Legislative, and Executive estates,” Eno said.

He assured the FHA of his administration’s support to ensure timely completion and promised to extend state security coverage to protect the project site.

The Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, implemented through the FHA and the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, aims to provide sustainable, affordable homes for low- and middle-income earners across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Under the initiative, state governments provide land and infrastructure, while the FHA oversees construction and delivery — a model expected to boost employment and advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals on affordable housing and sustainable cities.

Earlier, Ambassador Ernest Essien said the visit aimed to seek collaboration with the Ministry to enhance skill acquisition and job creation, particularly in Akwa Ibom State. He praised the Ministry for training Nigerians in various trades and helping them compete effectively in the job market.

“The Ministry’s housing and infrastructure goals require a skilled and reliable workforce,” he said.

“We plan to contribute by producing certified tertiary-level artisan graduates ready to support national projects.”

Essien also commended the Ministry’s plan to train, certify, and provide jobs for 10,000 construction artisans annually over the next three years.

The Federal Government says the revival of the Aluminium Smelting Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, will inject 540 megawatts (MW) of electricity into the national grid.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu announced this during a visit to the plant, pledging to reconnect it to the grid and complete the abandoned 330kV substation in the area.

Adelabu described ALSCON as a key industrial asset that had remained idle for decades due to lack of power. He said all six turbines of 90MW each were in good condition, and full capacity could be achieved once transmission lines from Ikot Ekpene to Ikot Abasi are completed.

The minister added that the project could be expanded to 660MW and would create over 15,000 jobs while cutting aluminium imports.

ALSCON’s adviser, Viacheslav Krylov, said the firm targets 200,000 metric tonnes of annual output within six years but needs stable power and a stronger grid connection.

Speaking during his investiture as Patron of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Akwa Ibom chapter, Governor Eno revealed that the state has been able to fund numerous projects without resorting to borrowing. He credited this achievement to strategic engagement with the federal government and what he described as “visionary economic decisions” by the Tinubu administration.

The event, held in Uyo as part of the NIPR’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), also witnessed the re-election of Dr. Ike Neliaku as National President and Chairman of the Council.
