Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State, has approved the immediate dissolution of the State Executive Council, effectively relieving all commissioners of their duties.

The decision was conveyed in a statement issued by Bukar Tijani, who explained that the move is intended to create room for council members interested in contesting elective positions in the upcoming general elections.

As part of the directive, all commissioners have been instructed to hand over the affairs of their ministries to permanent secretaries on or before April 3, 2026.

Governor Zulum expressed appreciation to the outgoing officials, commending their dedication, service, and contributions to governance and development in the state.

The dissolution is seen as a strategic political step ahead of the election cycle, allowing appointees to pursue political ambitions without holding executive office.

At a major international real estate summit in Lagos, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo urged industry leaders to rethink how homes are built in Nigeria.

He called for a shift towards sustainable housing practices that not only reduce harm to the planet but also make shelter more accessible to all. Speaking during the 75th World Congress of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI), Osinbajo said the future of real estate must reflect the needs of the people and the planet alike.

He pointed out that climate-responsive design using local materials is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. In his view, housing should serve everyone, not just the wealthy or formally employed.

To do this, he said governments need to take social housing seriously not just as a policy tool, but as a smart investment that pays off both economically and socially.

Citing past and present examples, Osinbajo praised the efforts of former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande, who built over 30,000 homes between 1979 and 1983, and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who added more than 12,000 units between 2019 and 2023. Despite financial challenges, both leaders were able to deliver results by planning well, buying materials in bulk, and hiring local contractors. Osinbajo noted that their success came down to political will and good strategy.

He also pushed for broader mortgage access that includes those working in the informal sector. To help with that, he recommended embracing digital platforms such as Proptech, which can simplify land registration and reduce fraud.

FIABCI Nigeria’s President Akin Opatola echoed Osinbajo’s call, saying real estate isn’t just about buildings it’s about people and progress. He described Lagos as a city full of energy and potential, ready to lead the way in innovation and sustainable development. In a message delivered at the event, FIABCI World President Ramon Riera said the congress marks a turning point, not just for Africa, but for the global property market. He said Lagos, with its fast growth and vibrant culture, is the perfect place to explore new ideas in real estate and push for a more inclusive, eco-conscious future.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Sunday, expressed concerns that the proposed tax reform bills would disproportionately benefit Lagos State, leaving other states, particularly those in the North, at a disadvantage.

In an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Governor Zulum clarified that his objections to the bills were not a form of opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, but rather a call for more thorough consultations before implementation. Zulum emphasized his continued support for President Tinubu, highlighting the significant backing the president received from the North during the election, with 60.2% of his votes coming from the region.

During the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, Zulum stated that the governors had urged the federal government to delay the implementation of the tax reforms in order to allow for broader stakeholder consultations.

He argued that there were misconceptions surrounding the tax issue and stressed that it was not about opposing the president, but about seeking the right to be consulted.

Zulum further expressed concern about the economic consequences for states outside Lagos, particularly in the Southeast, South-South, and parts of the Southwest, which might face negative impacts from the tax reforms. According to his analysis, only Lagos would benefit from the changes, with other regions potentially bearing the brunt of the impact.

“Based on calculations, only Lagos will benefit. Why the rush? Let’s pause and analyze these bills thoroughly. This is our contention, not an attack on the president,” Zulum explained.

The governor also pointed out that even officials in Lagos had reservations about the reform bills, acknowledging potential revenue losses. He reiterated the need for more comprehensive discussions to ensure that the tax reforms would bring equitable benefits to all states.

In response to Zulum’s comments, the presidency dismissed his claims. Tope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, took to social media to counter Zulum’s statements, claiming the governor was spreading misinformation. Ajayi denied that the tax reform bills included provisions to scrap TETFUND, NASENI, and NITDA by 2029, as suggested by Zulum in his television interview.

Additionally, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar weighed in on the issue, calling for a fiscal system that promotes justice, fairness, and equity. Atiku, in a post on his official X handle, stressed the importance of transparency in the ongoing discussions and urged the National Assembly to make public the resolutions of the NEC on the bills. He echoed concerns about the potential for uneven development, calling for an inclusive and open public hearing process.
