Several people are feared trapped after a four-storey building under construction collapsed at Independence Layout, Enugu State, on Sunday morning.

The building, located at No. 1 Ogbaguru Street, opposite St Patrick’s Hospital, reportedly collapsed at about 8:00 a.m.

The structure was said to be under construction for use as a hotel when part of it suddenly gave way.

Construction workers were reportedly staying inside the uncompleted building when the collapse occurred.

A viral video posted by activist Chuks showed residents and passersby gathered around the site as frantic rescue efforts began.

An eyewitness who filmed the scene said the collapse happened about 30 minutes before he arrived.

He said people were still believed to be trapped inside the building.

“People are still inside. Look at the collapsed side. Half or part of the building,” the eyewitness said.

Eyewitness Calls for Excavator

The eyewitness later entered part of the structure to determine whether anyone trapped beneath the debris could be heard.

He appealed to government authorities to urgently provide an excavator and other equipment to support the rescue operation.

He also spoke with a man identified as Bruce, who appeared to have escaped from the building.

The eyewitness warned Bruce against remaining inside the unstable structure, saying the remaining portion could also collapse.

He further said some people were believed to be alive beneath the rubble as residents attempted to cut through metal rods and debris.

“They are still alive and we are praying that nothing will press down the lumps of blocks, concrete and all that,” he said.

Vehicles Damaged, Electrical Hazard Raised

The collapse reportedly affected vehicles parked within the premises of the nearby St Patrick’s Hospital.

According to the eyewitness, debris fell towards the hospital area and damaged some vehicles.

He also raised concerns about electrical hazards at the scene after roofing materials became entangled with electric wires.

“If it is still on, it is dangerous,” he warned, calling for electricity around the area to be disconnected.

Hundreds of residents and passersby reportedly gathered at the scene after hearing the sound of the collapse.

Locals joined efforts to rescue those believed to be trapped, but the heavy debris was said to be slowing the operation.

Cause of Collapse Unknown

The exact cause of the building collapse was not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has renewed concerns over building regulations, construction standards, professional supervision and the activities of unqualified practitioners.

The pupils and teacher abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after being rescued by security agencies.

The development was confirmed on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced the successful rescue of the victims.

Onanuga disclosed the development in a post on his verified X account, describing the rescue as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping.

“Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies,” he wrote.

He, however, did not provide details of the operation or disclose the identities of those involved in the rescue.

The victims’ release has brought relief to their families, residents of Orire and other stakeholders who had expressed concern over their safety since the abduction.

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday gutted parts of the popular Bode Market in Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Oyo State, destroying several shops and goods worth millions of naira.

Iran has issued a fresh warning that hotels accommodating United States soldiers across the Middle East will be treated as legitimate targets amid the ongoing conflict involving Washington and its allies.

The threat was delivered by Iranian armed forces spokesperson, General Abolfazl Shekarchi, who stated that any location hosting American troops would be considered part of US military infrastructure. He argued that once US personnel occupy civilian facilities such as hotels, those locations effectively become military targets. 

The warning comes as tensions continue to escalate following the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, when joint strikes by the United States and Israel triggered a broader regional conflict. Iran has since retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting US and allied interests across the Middle East. 

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also accused US forces of using civilians in Gulf countries as “human shields,” alleging that American troops have relocated from traditional military bases to hotels and office spaces. He called on hospitality providers in the region to refuse accommodation to US personnel. 

Reports indicate that Iranian authorities have issued warnings to hotels in key locations, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, while also identifying similar troop movements in countries such as Syria, Lebanon, and Djibouti. 

The development reflects a shift in battlefield dynamics, as damage to US military bases has reportedly forced some troops to operate from temporary civilian locations, including hotels.

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, collapsed on Thursday afternoon while working in his office and was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, for urgent medical attention.

Sources in Yenagoa confirmed that the deputy governor was moved into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his condition worsened.

A journalist familiar with the situation told our source that his exact condition remains unclear.

The Journalist said:
“His situation was serious at the time he was moved into the ICU. We cannot confirm his current state. There are rumours that he has passed on, but we cannot report anything until the state government issues an official statement.”

Confusion Over False Death Report

A news platform, TV News, briefly published a report claiming that Mr. Ewhrudjakpo had died, but the platform quickly deleted the story from its website.

As of the time of filing this report, the Bayelsa State Government has not issued any official statement on the deputy governor’s condition.

Armed security operatives have reportedly cordoned off the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, restricting movement in and around the facility as medical teams continue stabilising the deputy governor.

Armed bandits stormed Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Sunday night, abducting at least 25 schoolgirls and killing the school’s vice principal.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers, firing sporadically before gaining access to the school. Several bodies were reportedly seen on the school premises.

Air force jets were observed patrolling the area by Monday morning, while security forces cordoned off the school to prevent further attacks.

CSP Nafiu Abubakar, spokesman for the Kebbi Police Command, confirmed the attack. He said a tactical team has been deployed to rescue the abducted students and that all efforts are being made to ensure their safety. The Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, vowed to end the menace of banditry in the state.

Authorities continue to investigate the attack as security agencies work to secure the release of the students.
