The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the $460 million Chinese loan obtained in 2010 under former President Goodluck Jonathan for the installation of CCTV cameras across Abuja.

The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Amobi Ogah (Abia, PDP) during Wednesday’s plenary. He noted that despite the huge investment, insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has worsened, with no trace of a functioning CCTV system.

Ogah recalled that the loan, obtained from China-EXIM Bank, was meant to fund the CCTV project awarded to ZTE Communications of China. The loan, he said, is still being serviced even though the project was never completed.

He lamented that Nigeria continues to repay the debt without seeing results, describing it as a “lose-lose situation” for the country.

Other lawmakers, including Billy Osawaru (Edo) and Ahmed Jaha (Borno), backed the motion, calling for accountability and proper oversight.

Following the debate, the House resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the project’s status and report back for further legislative action.
