Several residents have reportedly been killed after suspected militia members attacked communities in Jwak Maitumbi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday and caused extensive damage to homes and farmland. About 45 residential buildings were reportedly destroyed, while attackers also looted valuables and damaged crops.

The incident was reported at about 7:45am, according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama. Security personnel were later deployed to the affected community.

Residents flee after attack

A military security source told the publication that troops found about 45 houses destroyed when they arrived at the scene.

The attackers reportedly took valuables from residents before leaving the area. Several people were also said to have suffered gunshot wounds, while some victims were reportedly killed during the assault.

The violence forced many residents to leave their homes. Women, children and elderly people reportedly fled the community as they searched for safer locations.

The attack also affected agricultural activities in the area. According to reports, the assailants entered farms belonging to Fulani residents and allegedly destroyed large quantities of crops with cutlasses.

The destruction of homes and farmland has added to concerns about the wider impact of insecurity on rural communities. Beyond the immediate loss of lives, attacks of this nature can leave displaced families without shelter, food supplies or access to their sources of income.

Military moves to prevent reprisal

Following the attack, troops reportedly summoned the Galadima and youth leader of Jwak Maitumbi.

The community leaders were asked to cooperate with security agencies and assist efforts to identify those responsible for the violence.

The military’s engagement is aimed at preventing the situation from developing into further conflict. Security concerns remain high because attacks on homes and farms can increase tensions between neighbouring communities.

Plateau State has experienced repeated episodes of communal violence. Previous incidents have sometimes led to retaliatory attacks, resulting in further deaths, destruction of property and displacement.

Zagazola Makama warned that the latest incident could create conditions for revenge attacks if those responsible are not identified and held accountable.

The publication said a failure to establish responsibility could also increase feelings of injustice and encourage affected communities to seek their own form of retaliation.

Security presence increased

Troops have reportedly maintained a presence around the affected area while working with community and traditional leaders.

The engagement is intended to reduce tensions, support the restoration of calm and prevent further violence.

For residents who have been displaced, however, the destruction of homes and farmland creates an immediate humanitarian challenge. Families who lost their houses may require temporary shelter, while farmers whose crops were destroyed could face difficulties restoring their livelihoods.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about security in parts of Mangu Local Government Area and the ability of vulnerable communities to protect their homes, farms and livelihoods.

Beyond the security response, the destruction highlights the close link between conflict, housing and community stability. When violence forces families from their homes and destroys productive farmland, recovery can become much harder and displacement can persist long after the immediate attack ends.

Lagos-based civil society groups have called on the state government to accelerate urban development in Makoko, warning that failure to act could endanger thousands of residents living under high-tension power lines.

The Coalition for Good Governance, comprising over 80 organisations, stressed the need for immediate evacuation and infrastructure improvements to safeguard lives and property.

Comrade Nelson Ekujumi, convener of the coalition, highlighted that previous demolitions in 2005 and 2012 were necessary for public safety, but the persistent construction of informal structures under high-voltage wires has heightened risks of fire, electrocution, and flooding.

He noted that Makoko remains one of Lagos’ most vulnerable urban settlements, home to between 80,000 and 250,000 people who largely depend on artisanal fishing and informal trade.

The coalition urged government authorities to engage transparently with residents while enforcing safety regulations. They called for fair compensation for families affected by the demolitions and warned that continued noncompliance by residents under unsafe conditions could lead to avoidable tragedies.

Ekujumi added that Makoko’s recurring demolition pattern underscores systemic planning challenges in Lagos. He urged the Lagos Assembly to expedite oversight and implementation of the urban development programme to prevent further humanitarian and environmental risks.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State Branch, has launched a Disaster Risk Reduction Club at Ebenezer African Church Primary School, Egbeda, to promote flood preparedness and safety awareness among pupils and their communities.

The initiative, implemented under the Italian Government–funded Flood Resilience Project in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, aims to equip young Nigerians with knowledge and practical skills to identify and respond to disaster risks.

The Administrative Officer of the Lagos Branch, Adeshile Nicholas, said the clubs teach pupils how to prevent floods, respond during emergencies, and practice good hygiene and first aid. He added that the project is active in about seven states, including Lagos, Enugu, Edo, and Cross River, with interventions in Alimosho and Eti-Osa carried out in partnership with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

Nicholas noted that behavioral change and limited mobility remain key challenges, adding that poor waste disposal habits continue to worsen flood risks.

A Security Officer from the Red Cross National Headquarters, Michael Olufemi, highlighted the importance of early disaster education, saying it helps pupils become agents of resilience in their communities. He also urged improved environmental management to address blocked drains, a major cause of flooding in Lagos.

The event was attended by representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Local Education Authority, National Disaster Response Team, and the NRCS National Headquarters, featuring sessions on early warning and disaster response.

Through the Flood Resilience Project, the Nigerian Red Cross Society reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods from climate-related disasters.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has begun a major crackdown on uncompleted and abandoned buildings across Abuja to curb rising cases of robbery, abduction, and theft.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, directed all Divisional Police Officers to “intensify patrols and conduct thorough raids on uncompleted buildings and suspected criminal hideouts within their jurisdictions.”

Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh said the move was part of ongoing efforts to “prevent criminals from using abandoned or active construction sites as operational bases.”

The command also ordered property developers to register and profile all artisans, labourers, and security personnel working or residing at construction sites before October 31, 2025.

“Property developers are urged to visit the nearest police divisions and ensure their security personnel, artisans, and labourers are properly documented,” Adeh said, warning that “any unidentified persons found on-site after 6:00 p.m. will be arrested.”

She reminded residents that scavenging, known locally as Baban Bola, remains banned in the FCT.

“Residents are advised to report any scavengers or suspicious persons sighted around their neighbourhoods immediately to the police,” she added.

Adeh emphasized that “security is a collective responsibility,” urging estate managers and community leaders to cooperate with the police by reporting suspicious movements and profiling domestic staff.
