Correctional Service unveils housing rehabilitation committee as part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure development, agricultural programmes, and inmate rehabilitation initiatives across correctional facilities in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) announced the formation of a special committee tasked with coordinating housing and agricultural projects designed to improve living conditions within correctional institutions while supporting broader rehabilitation objectives.

According to the Service, the committee will oversee the planning, implementation, and monitoring of projects aimed at enhancing staff welfare, expanding housing infrastructure, and improving operational efficiency across correctional centres.

Officials explained that the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms intended to modernise correctional facilities and create environments that support rehabilitation, reintegration, and skills development for inmates.

The committee is also expected to identify opportunities for agricultural development within correctional facilities. These programmes are intended to provide vocational training, increase productivity, and contribute to food security while equipping inmates with practical skills that can support their reintegration into society after release.

NCoS leadership noted that housing development remains a key component of staff welfare and institutional effectiveness. Improved accommodation for personnel is expected to boost morale, strengthen service delivery, and enhance operational performance within correctional facilities.

The Service further stated that the committee will collaborate with relevant government agencies, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to mobilise resources and ensure successful implementation of identified projects.

Stakeholders believe that combining housing development with agricultural and rehabilitation initiatives could contribute to more sustainable correctional management while supporting broader social and economic objectives.

The move aligns with ongoing efforts to reposition correctional institutions as centres focused not only on custody but also on rehabilitation, skills acquisition, and successful reintegration of inmates into society.
