The Delta State Police Command has declared Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, a prominent community leader in Asaba, wanted following his alleged role in the killing of three youths during a land dispute.

SP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the suspect allegedly led an armed group that attacked residents in Okwe community, a suburb of Asaba, on November 24, 2025.

“The Delta Police Command has activated a full-scale manhunt for Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona Community, and all members of his armed group,” Edafe said.

According to the police, Nkeeshe and his associates, some disguised in army camouflage, attempted to enforce an unauthorized quit notice on the land without any court order. The confrontation led to indiscriminate gunfire, resulting in the deaths of three youths.

The police confirmed that the injured youths were taken to a nearby hospital but later died while receiving treatment.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, deployed tactical teams and intelligence operatives to track, identify, and arrest all individuals involved. The CP condemned the incident as a “reckless and unprovoked display of lawlessness” and assured that no one, regardless of title or influence, would escape justice.

Edafe added that normalcy has been restored in the community with ongoing patrols and intelligence-led operations to maintain security. Residents have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the arrest of the suspects.

The Delta Police Command remains committed to enforcing the rule of law and preventing further violence in Asaba and its surrounding areas.

In a public awareness post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the command stated: “There are some laws that you don’t know the state frowns against. So, every weekend, we will be dropping some of these laws so that you will be aware.” The warning specifically addressed what it described as clothing that exposes private body parts in public spaces.

Citing Section 29 of the Delta State VAPP law, the police explained that “any person who intentionally exposes private parts, wholly or partly, in public commits the offence of indecent exposure and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding ₦50,000 or a court-ordered community service, or both.”

The VAPP Act, originally signed into law federally in 2015, was domesticated in Delta State in July 2020. The legislation targets all forms of violence and abuse in both private and public life, with provisions covering a wide range of offenses including female genital mutilation, domestic abuse, harmful widowhood practices, and abandonment.

The police have vowed to continue sensitizing the public weekly on laws that are often overlooked, reinforcing that ignorance will not be an excuse for violations.

Residents are urged to comply with the state’s dress code guidelines as enforcement efforts intensify.
