The announcement was made during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at Peace Park, where the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.

The housing units are located in Okaka, and the Bayelsa State Housing and Property Development Authority has been directed to work with the Office of the Head of Service to develop clear allocation guidelines.

Boost for Workers’ Welfare

In addition to the housing initiative, the governor approved several demands from labour unions.

These include the payment of promotion arrears and the immediate implementation of annual promotion steps in line with civil service rules.

Governor Diri also recalled that his administration had earlier approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for civil servants in October 2024.

Addressing concerns about fire service workers excluded from the wage structure, he directed relevant authorities to resolve the issue and ensure fair implementation.

Education Reform and State Ownership

On education, the governor revealed that the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, is now fully owned by the Bayelsa State Government.

He explained that the amendment to the law establishing the institution was signed in March 2025, strengthening state control and management.

Transport and Infrastructure Plans

The state government also plans to improve transportation by acquiring additional vehicles, including CNG-powered buses, to enhance mobility.

Governor Diri added that ongoing investments in power infrastructure, particularly the state’s independent power project, will support the operation of these vehicles.

Call to Local Governments

While acknowledging the autonomy of local governments, the governor urged council chairmen to pay outstanding Christmas bonuses owed to workers.

He emphasised the importance of cooperation between all levels of government in ensuring workers’ welfare.

Labour Unions React

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress commended the governor for prioritising workers’ needs.

They also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ongoing nine-storey civil servants’ secretariat project, noting that it will improve working conditions when completed.

The unions reaffirmed their support for the administration’s development efforts across the state.
