The Federal Government has issued a warning of potential flooding in several locations across 10 states, following predictions of heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026.

The alert, issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Ministry of Environment, identified Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia states as likely to experience significant rainfall that may trigger flooding. Communities listed include Onitsha, Atani, Afikpo, Ayetoro, Ikom, Owerri, Port Harcourt, and Umuahia.

The ministry advised residents and local authorities to take precautionary measures to reduce risks to lives and property. Usman Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, emphasized the importance of early preparedness to mitigate flood impacts.

The ministry’s forecast aligns with earlier warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which cautioned farmers against early planting after unpredictable rains in February and March 2026. Lagos State had also issued alerts for heavy rainfall and flash flooding as the rainy season approached.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow official updates to ensure safety.

The Ogun State Government has warned residents in riverbank and wetland communities to brace for possible flooding from October 20 to November 3, 2025, due to the expected overflow of the Ogun River.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, the government explained that the overflow will result from the controlled release of water from Oyan Dam, following heavy rainfall in northern Nigeria and rising tidal levels.

Affected communities include Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola, and parts of Abeokuta such as Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo.

Oresanya urged residents to stay alert, move to higher grounds, and avoid riverbanks to prevent loss of lives and property. He assured that the water levels would recede within 10 days, adding that while the government is taking precautionary measures, climate change continues to pose challenges for coastal states like Ogun.

In a related development, the Nigerian Red Cross Society has launched disaster risk reduction clubs in schools across Gombe State to strengthen flood preparedness and protect children. The initiative, supported by the Italian government and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), follows severe flooding in Billiri and Yamaltu-Deba local councils earlier this year.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State Branch, has launched a Disaster Risk Reduction Club at Ebenezer African Church Primary School, Egbeda, to promote flood preparedness and safety awareness among pupils and their communities.

The initiative, implemented under the Italian Government–funded Flood Resilience Project in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, aims to equip young Nigerians with knowledge and practical skills to identify and respond to disaster risks.

The Administrative Officer of the Lagos Branch, Adeshile Nicholas, said the clubs teach pupils how to prevent floods, respond during emergencies, and practice good hygiene and first aid. He added that the project is active in about seven states, including Lagos, Enugu, Edo, and Cross River, with interventions in Alimosho and Eti-Osa carried out in partnership with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

Nicholas noted that behavioral change and limited mobility remain key challenges, adding that poor waste disposal habits continue to worsen flood risks.

A Security Officer from the Red Cross National Headquarters, Michael Olufemi, highlighted the importance of early disaster education, saying it helps pupils become agents of resilience in their communities. He also urged improved environmental management to address blocked drains, a major cause of flooding in Lagos.

The event was attended by representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Local Education Authority, National Disaster Response Team, and the NRCS National Headquarters, featuring sessions on early warning and disaster response.

Through the Flood Resilience Project, the Nigerian Red Cross Society reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods from climate-related disasters.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has warned of possible flooding in Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Benue, Adamawa, Niger, and Bayelsa States, following rising water levels along parts of the River Niger and River Benue.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, NiHSA Director-General, Umar Muhammed, said current hydrological monitoring indicates a high risk of localised flooding in several riverine areas. He urged residents in flood-prone communities to remain alert and follow official advisories.

Muhammed also revealed that recent water quality checks showed contamination in some shallow wells due to floodwater intrusion, stressing the need for collaboration among government agencies, humanitarian partners, and local authorities to ensure access to safe drinking water.

He announced that NiHSA is implementing a Five-Year Strategic Action Plan focused on innovation, regional empowerment, and stakeholder engagement, all in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are expanding real-time data collection and upgrading our early warning systems with satellite imagery and digital modelling to better predict and communicate flood risks,” Muhammed said.

According to Technical Adviser Stephen Jabo, while the rainy season is expected to end in most parts of Nigeria by November, high river levels could still trigger severe flooding in the coming weeks. He urged state governments to intensify community sensitisation, clear drainage channels, and prepare evacuation centres for at-risk residents.

NiHSA reaffirmed its commitment to a data-driven approach to safeguard lives, protect infrastructure, and strengthen national resilience against the impacts of climate change.
