At the parallel market, the naira appreciated to N1,392 per dollar, improving from N1,396 recorded on Tuesday, reflecting sustained demand management and improved market sentiment.

Similarly, at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the currency strengthened to N1,369 per dollar.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the indicative exchange rate fell from N1,389 per dollar on Tuesday to N1,369, indicating a N20 appreciation for the local currency at the official window.

However, despite the gains recorded across both markets, the gap between the parallel and official exchange rates widened significantly to N23 per dollar, compared to N5 recorded the previous day.

Analysts say the widening spread may reflect underlying liquidity pressures and persistent segmentation in the foreign exchange market, even as recent policy measures continue to support relative stability in the naira.

The development underscores the complex dynamics shaping Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, where short-term currency gains often coexist with structural imbalances between official and informal trading segments.

At the parallel market, the local currency strengthened to N1,396 per dollar, improving from N1,400 per dollar recorded last Thursday, indicating a modest recovery driven by improved street-level dollar supply.

However, at the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, the naira depreciated to N1,389 per dollar, reflecting continued pressure within the formal segment of the market.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the indicative exchange rate weakened from N1,382.75 per dollar last Thursday, representing a depreciation of N6.25 for the currency.

Despite the divergence in performance, the spread between the parallel and official exchange rates narrowed sharply to N5 per dollar, compared to N17.25 recorded in the previous week, suggesting improved alignment across the two markets.

Market data also indicated a slowdown in trading activity at the interbank window, with the number of deals dropping to 71, an 18 per cent decline from 87 transactions recorded in the previous trading session.

Analysts say the narrowing gap between both markets reflects ongoing efforts by monetary authorities to unify exchange rates and improve liquidity, although short-term volatility remains a key feature of the system.

They further note that sustained convergence will depend on consistent foreign exchange inflows, effective policy implementation, and continued confidence among investors and market participants.

The development underscores the delicate balancing act facing regulators as they attempt to stabilise the naira while deepening reforms in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the naira depreciated to N1,386.65 per dollar, representing a loss of N5.86 or 0.4 per cent compared to N1,380.79 recorded before the Easter break on April 2.

The latest movement also follows a slight dip recorded earlier in the month, when the currency traded at N1,378.70 per dollar on April 1, indicating a marginal 0.1 per cent depreciation.

Despite the recent weakening, analysts maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook for the naira, pointing to ongoing monetary and foreign exchange reforms by the apex bank aimed at improving market stability.

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) noted that relative stability of the currency in the first quarter of 2026 has helped boost business confidence, particularly among investors navigating Nigeria’s volatile economic environment.

According to the CPPE, the naira has largely traded within a band of N1,340 to N1,430 per dollar during the period, reflecting a more predictable exchange rate trend compared to previous volatility.

The think tank attributed this stability to improved foreign exchange liquidity, supported by stronger oil earnings and a steady rise in external reserves, which have surpassed the $50 billion mark.

Economic analysts say while short-term fluctuations are expected in a liberalised foreign exchange market, the broader outlook will depend on sustained inflows, effective policy coordination, and global oil price dynamics.

The development highlights the delicate balance facing monetary authorities as they seek to stabilise the currency while supporting economic growth in an environment shaped by both domestic reforms and external pressures.

Findings from currency traders indicate that the naira weakened from around ₦1,400/$ to ₦1,415/$, as demand for the US dollar continued to outpace supply in the informal market segment.

FX Pressure Persists

The depreciation highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s forex market, where limited dollar liquidity and rising demand from importers, travelers, and businesses continue to drive exchange rate volatility.

The parallel market, often more reactive than the official window, remains sensitive to short-term supply gaps and speculative demand, leading to frequent fluctuations in the naira’s value.

Gap Between Official and Parallel Markets

Despite relative stability in the official foreign exchange window, the gap between both markets persists, raising concerns among analysts about arbitrage opportunities and market inefficiencies.

Economic watchers note that the disparity underscores the need for stronger FX inflows, improved investor confidence, and sustained monetary policy coordination.

Outlook

Experts say the naira’s performance will largely depend on the country’s ability to boost foreign exchange earnings, attract investment, and maintain consistent reforms in the FX market.

Until then, the currency may continue to face intermittent pressure, particularly in the parallel market where supply remains constrained.

In the official market, the naira traded around the ₦1,390–₦1,400 per dollar range, reflecting only mild fluctuations compared to earlier sessions this month. Recent data indicates that the currency has largely hovered near the ₦1,400/$ level in March, suggesting a period of controlled volatility driven by ongoing market reforms and liquidity management.

Market participants reported that the exchange rate remains influenced by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s “willing-buyer, willing-seller” framework, which continues to support price discovery and reduce sharp swings in the official window.

Parallel Market Movement

At the parallel (black) market, the naira traded slightly above the official rate, with the dollar exchanging within a similar band of roughly ₦1,400/$, depending on location and demand pressures.

The narrow gap between the official and parallel markets highlights improved rate convergence, a trend analysts attribute to increased transparency and better FX liquidity in recent months.

Market Outlook

Financial analysts say the naira’s current stability is being supported by consistent interventions and structural adjustments by the Central Bank, including reforms aimed at boosting dollar inflows and investor confidence.

However, demand for foreign exchange—driven by imports, travel, and offshore obligations—continues to exert pressure on the local currency. Experts warn that sustaining stability will depend on stronger FX supply, improved exports, and broader economic reforms.

Overall, the naira remains within a predictable range, offering short-term relief to businesses and individuals navigating Nigeria’s volatile foreign exchange environment.

The Nigerian Naira maintained stability against the US Dollar on Thursday, February 26, 2026, following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent stabilization measures.

Investors and traders are cautiously optimistic as the currency continues to trade within a narrow range, reflecting confidence in the apex bank’s intervention and growing macroeconomic stability.

In the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the Naira opened trading at 1,351.12 per dollar. Mid-morning activity saw the rate dip slightly to 1,347.99, before settling near 1,350.13 by midday.

Analysts note that this stability follows Wednesday’s market close and is influenced by the CBN’s 50-basis-point cut in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), now at 26.50%.

Market liquidity remains robust, supported by the CBN’s proactive management of excess bank liquidity and a steady supply of dollars for essential imports.

The official mean rate for the week has settled at approximately 1,349, signaling greater transparency and a reduction in speculative pressures in the foreign exchange market.

Parallel Market Performance

In the parallel market, the Naira also showed signs of stability, exchanging between 1,355 and 1,365 per dollar.

The spread between the official and parallel rates has narrowed to less than 1.5%, reflecting improved market convergence. Informal traders in major hubs such as Lagos and Abuja attribute this to the CBN’s policy of allowing Bureau De Change (BDC) operators regular access to foreign currency, which has helped meet demand and curb speculative activity.

Key Drivers Behind Naira Stability

Several macroeconomic factors have contributed to the Naira’s stability:

Interest Rate Adjustment: The reduction of the MPR to 26.50% indicates the CBN’s confidence in the ongoing disinflationary trend. While lower interest rates can sometimes weaken a currency, the market has interpreted this move as a signal of confidence in sustainable economic growth.

Strong Foreign Reserves: Nigeria’s external reserves climbed to $50.45 billion, the highest level in 13 years, providing nearly 10 months of import cover. This buffer helps protect the Naira against external shocks and enhances investor confidence.

Disinflation Trend: Headline inflation eased to 15.10% in January 2026, marking ten consecutive months of decline. This consistent drop in price growth has strengthened the real value of the Naira, making it more attractive to both domestic and foreign investors.

Economic Expansion: With a projected GDP growth rate of 4.68% for 2026, market sentiment has improved. Investors are increasingly confident that fiscal reforms, particularly in energy and agriculture, will support long-term currency stability.

Market Outlook

Financial analysts expect the Naira to maintain its range between 1,345 and 1,355 against the dollar for the remainder of the week. Continued vigilance from the CBN, coupled with structural reforms in key economic sectors, is likely to sustain the current equilibrium. The narrowing gap between the official and parallel market rates also suggests reduced pressure from speculative activities, a positive sign for both traders and policymakers.

Experts have highlighted that the stabilization measures are timely, given the historical volatility in the foreign exchange market. The combination of high foreign reserves, declining inflation, and careful liquidity management positions Nigeria to withstand external shocks and maintain investor confidence.

What This Means for Nigerians

Businesses and Importers: Improved exchange rate stability provides greater predictability for importing goods and planning foreign transactions.

Consumers: Stable currency reduces the risk of sudden price hikes on imported goods, helping protect household purchasing power.

Investors: Narrow spreads and transparency in the market create an environment conducive to both domestic and foreign investment.

Conclusion

The Naira’s steady performance against the dollar on February 26 reflects a combination of proactive monetary policy, rising foreign reserves, and positive macroeconomic trends.

As the CBN continues its stabilization program, and with the government pursuing reforms in energy and agriculture, analysts remain cautiously optimistic that the currency will retain its stability, supporting broader economic growth and investor confidence.

Data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) show that the Naira opened at ₦1,344.74 per dollar, touched an intraday high of ₦1,345.58, and hovered around ₦1,345.40 by mid-day. The previous day’s closing rate stood at ₦1,346.00.

Market watchers attribute the relative stability to interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which continues efforts to harmonise exchange rates across different segments.

Improved Liquidity in Official Window

The narrowing spread in the official market is linked to stronger liquidity inflows from international counterparties and a recent policy shift allowing Bureau De Change (BDC) operators access to up to $150,000 weekly through authorised dealer banks.

The move has helped reduce retail demand pressure that often pushes official rates higher.

Parallel Market Trades at Premium

In the parallel market, the Dollar traded between ₦1,360 and ₦1,365, depending on location and transaction size.

Although the informal market still commands a premium, the gap between official and parallel rates has narrowed significantly to about ₦15–₦20, compared to wider spreads recorded in previous years.

Analysts say consistent supply in the NFEM has prevented the sharp spikes typically associated with foreign exchange shortages.

Key Drivers Supporting the Naira

Several macroeconomic factors are providing short-term support for the local currency:

Crude Oil Production: Nigeria’s output recently increased to 1.46 million barrels per day, boosting foreign reserve inflows.

Monetary Policy Tools: The Standing Deposit Facility and stable Open Repo Rates have helped regulate naira liquidity.

Institutional Capital Inflows: Increased foreign investor participation in Nigeria’s equity market has strengthened dollar supply.

With these fundamentals in place, analysts expect the Naira to trade within the ₦1,340–₦1,350 range in the official window, barring unexpected global or domestic shocks.

Quick Facts

Official NFEM rate: Approximately ₦1,450 per $1

Parallel market: Dealers buying at ₦1,460 and selling up to ₦1,474

What Happened Today

The NFEM — the Central Bank of Nigeria’s volume-weighted average rate based on formal transactions — stayed in the mid-₦1,400 range, according to market trackers.

Lagos parallel market dealers continued to offer higher prices, driven by strong demand from retail FX buyers, importers and Nigerians relying on informal channels for remittances.

Why the Gap Persists

Analysts attribute the persistent spread between the official rate and the parallel market to limited FX inflows into the formal window and sustained demand for dollars across import and personal transfer needs.
Recent CBN policies — including the rate cut announced in September 2025 and occasional market interventions — have helped reduce volatility but have not fully bridged the gap.

What It Means for Nigerians

Importers:
A higher parallel market rate increases the final cost of imported goods, especially when NFEM allocations are unavailable.

Consumers:
Rising import costs often push businesses to adjust their prices, adding pressure on household spending.

Remittances and Travel:
Individuals exchanging dollars informally receive slightly less naira per dollar than through official channels, raising the effective cost of FX.
