The Anambra State House of Assembly has raised serious concerns over the continuous discharge of household wastewater and raw liquid waste into newly built drainage systems. Lawmakers expressed deep disappointment during a recent legislative oversight tour, highlighting how these unhygienic practices undermine massive public infrastructure investments. The leadership of the House Committee on Works and Infrastructure warned that the habit of channelling household waste into public drains significantly shortens the lifespan of roads across the state, creating preventable safety risks and heavy financial burdens for taxpayers.

State officials pointed out that several property developers and residential owners willfully bypass building regulations by failing to install functional soakaways. Instead, many properties directly connect their wastewater outlets to roadside gutters, a development that accelerates structural erosion and pollutes local environments. This warning coincides with an intensified environmental sanitation crackdown spearheaded by state authorities aimed at tackling flooding, gully erosion, and severe public health threats.

To safeguard public assets, the legislative committee urged community leaders, transport unions, and residents to take active responsibility for municipal infrastructure. Lawmakers emphasized that regular environmental sanitation and community-led monitoring are essential to keep drainage systems clear of debris and toxic waste. The assembly further cautioned that property owners who refuse to comply with state environmental guidelines will face swift legal prosecution.
