The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) is set to break ground on a 200-unit residential housing project in Ekiti State as part of efforts to address the state’s housing deficit. The project, which will consist of two-bedroom bungalows, is scheduled to begin in November or December, following the end of the rainy season.

Speaking to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the FHA, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, disclosed that construction would begin with an initial phase of 100 units. He commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for facilitating the project through the allocation of 20 hectares of land along the Ekiti State University Road, as well as the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy at no cost.

“The governor, in his magnanimity, gave us 20 hectares of land and ensured all documentation was in place,” Ojo said. “We have completed the groundwork, and the project will officially take off after the rains.”

A former member of the House of Representatives, Ojo lauded Governor Oyebanji’s inclusive governance style and his ability to attract federal support to the state. According to him, the increased number of federal appointments and developmental projects directed toward Ekiti is a direct result of the synergy between the state and the presidency.

“No previous administration has secured as many federal appointments and infrastructure projects for Ekiti State as this one,” Ojo remarked. “It underscores both President Bola Tinubu’s regard for the state and Governor Oyebanji’s effective leadership.”

He noted that Oyebanji’s inclusive leadership had expanded the political base of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti, leading to significant political realignments. Among these is the recent defection of former Senator Biodun Olujimi from the opposition to the ruling party—a development Ojo attributed to the governor’s performance and credibility.

“Oyebanji isn’t governing only for APC members—he is governing for the entire state,” Ojo stated. “He understands the unique challenges of our people because he was part of the struggle that led to the creation of Ekiti. That history informs his approach to leadership.”

In a pointed critique of former Governor Kayode Fayemi’s reported disapproval of Oyebanji’s outreach to political rivals, particularly ex-Governor Ayodele Fayose, Ojo defended the governor’s approach as politically pragmatic and inclusive.

“Politics is about numbers. If people are willing to join and support development, they shouldn’t be turned away,” he said. “Even those who criticize such alliances once relied on similar political support. In 2007 and 2009, some of those now complaining benefited from cross-party collaboration.”

Using a Yoruba metaphor, Ojo added: “Even ‘iru’ and ‘ogiri’ fermented condiments make the soup taste better. That’s the beauty of inclusion.”

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government has approved over ₦12 billion in funding for key infrastructure and development projects, including road construction, housing, and agricultural initiatives.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, confirmed the approvals following the latest State Executive Council meeting in Ado Ekiti. Among the major projects is the rehabilitation of the Ikogosi–Ipole–Efon Alaaye Road, awarded at a contract sum of ₦7.3 billion.

According to Olatunbosun, the road project will improve transportation access, stimulate local economies, and enhance public safety. The rehabilitation works will include drainage construction, earthworks, asphalt laying, and are expected to be completed within 24 months.

With the dual momentum of federal collaboration and state-level investment, Ekiti State is positioning itself as a hub of infrastructure growth and inclusive governance.

The Ekiti State Government has urged property owners with land or buildings within 50 meters on both sides of Airport Road, Ado-Ekiti, to present themselves for verification at the Bureau of Land Services.

The announcement, issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands, Surveys and Geographic Information System (eGIS), Professor James Olaleye, said the exercise is aimed at properly documenting affected landowners for future government action.

Owners are required to visit the Bureau of Land Services, located behind the House of Assembly Complex at the State Secretariat, on or before September 30, 2025.

On Monday, Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye announced the directive during a crucial Stakeholders’ Engagement on National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign 2025 held in Ado Ekiti. The event was organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in partnership with the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Mrs. Afuye emphasized that identifying and removing illegal structures along waterways would not only serve as a deterrent against further encroachments but also significantly reduce the risk of flood-related catastrophes. She urged local government authorities to enforce these measures strictly to protect vulnerable communities and valuable assets from potential destruction.

The engagement brought together key stakeholders, including local government chairpersons, security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Red Cross, Nigerian Immigration Service, fire services, traditional rulers, traders, and civil servants.

Highlighting recent forecasts by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Mrs. Afuye warned that Ekiti State is among the regions predicted to face severe flooding in 2025. She called on local governments to prioritize environmental interventions such as combating desertification, regular desilting of waterways, afforestation, constructing flood barriers, and strictly prohibiting construction on flood-prone zones.

“We appeal to NEMA and SEMA to collaborate closely with local governments and the Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning to identify and dismantle illegal structures along waterways,” she stated. “This partnership is vital for strengthening our disaster prevention strategies statewide.”

The Deputy Governor also acknowledged the state government’s ongoing support for victims of recent disasters, including fire outbreaks and severe rainstorms, through relief distributions. She further appealed to the Federal Government, via NEMA, to allocate additional resources to assist affected communities.

NEMA Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, who was represented by the agency’s Head of Research and Planning, Mr. Fred Anusim, underscored the urgency of public sensitization in response to NiMet’s flood risk warnings. She referenced the tragic flooding incident in Niger State that led to submerged homes and loss of lives, attributing the crisis largely to human encroachment on natural waterways.

Mrs. Umar praised the accurate and timely flood outlooks provided annually by NiMet and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which have been instrumental in national disaster risk management efforts.

“The awareness campaign spearheaded by NEMA aims to prepare Ekiti residents and all stakeholders to minimize the impact of predicted floods,” she explained.

Dr. Evans Ugoh, NEMA’s Deputy Director of Disaster Risk Reduction, elaborated on the four phases of disaster management: mitigation/prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. He stressed that the current initiative focuses on proactive mitigation and preparedness activities, including early warning systems, capacity building, public education, risk mapping, and stakeholder collaboration.

Echoing these sentiments, SEMA General Manager Mr. Oludare Asaolu commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration for its proactive measures in dredging waterways and clearing drainage channels, efforts that have significantly reduced flooding occurrences in the state.

Mr. Asaolu cautioned that unchecked flooding can lead to loss of life, contamination of water supplies, disruption of economic activities, and outbreaks of infectious diseases, all contributing to increased mortality rates.

As Ekiti intensifies its fight against flooding, strict enforcement against illegal constructions on waterways remains a key pillar in safeguarding the state’s environment and people.

The decisions were made during the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Biodun Oyebanji on Friday.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, N3.1 billion was allocated for the supply and installation of medical equipment at the multipurpose building of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti. An additional N223.8 million was approved as facilitator fees for equipping the MSME/ICT hub project.

In addressing security, the government allocated N234.4 million for constructing six new security houses and renovating two existing ones in selected farm settlements across the state.

To promote agriculture and empower young people, the government approved N264.8 million for clearing 200 hectares of land for youth in agriculture programs in Ado and Ekiti-West Local Government Areas. Another N2.35 billion was set aside for clearing 1,000 hectares of land under the Youth in Agriculture Programme. This initiative aims to support dry-season farming for targeted communities and cooperatives.

The projects will span various locations, including Aramoko, Ogbese, Ise, Iyemero, Ikere, and Oke Ako, with 23 vendors expected to complete the land-clearing tasks within three months.

The state also approved the implementation of the Ekiti State Youth Policy, a roadmap to empower youths for national development. Covering 2024 to 2028, the policy will be executed by both public and private sector stakeholders, including NGOs.

In the water and sanitation sector, the council repealed the Ekiti State Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Sector Law No. 2 of 2021. It has been replaced with the Ekiti State Water Resources, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Sector Law 2024. The new law aims to regulate and improve water, sanitation, and hygiene services across the state.

These initiatives underscore the Oyebanji-led administration’s commitment to health, agriculture, security, youth empowerment, and improved infrastructure. By implementing these projects, the state aims to foster sustainable growth and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Dr. Olomojobi urged workers to reciprocate the government’s gesture by enhancing their dedication to public service, ensuring that the administration’s goals for development and governance are achieved.

Announced by the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, Mrs. Omotayo Adeola, the initiative seeks to ease the financial burden on traders by replacing unaffordable 15-year lease agreements with more flexible annual rent plans. The first six months will be rent-free, though traders will still be responsible for utilities like electricity and sanitation to maintain market conditions.

Eligibility and Registration Process

Adeola encouraged interested traders to register at the Facility Management Office at Oja Oba market, providing documents such as their National Identification Number (NIN) and a passport photograph. However, traders currently occupying shops or using them as warehouses will not qualify for the rent-free scheme, with their shops being forfeited and reassigned to deserving traders.

To optimize space, petty traders will be allowed to share stalls. Once allocations are completed, the government will strictly enforce laws against street trading to protect traders from accidents and enhance road safety.

Tackling Rising Food Prices

In addition to the rent-free initiative, the Ekiti State Government is working to stabilize food prices by improving the supply chain and mopping up excess produce during harvest periods. This effort aims to ensure year-round affordability of essential food items.
