The Lagos State Taskforce has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to street traders and illegal occupants operating along the Alaba Rago corridor of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway, ordering them to vacate the area ahead of a large-scale enforcement operation.

The agency said the planned exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enforce environmental regulations and the ban on street trading as provided under the Lagos State Environmental Laws of 2017.

In a statement signed by the Taskforce Public Relations Officer, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the agency disclosed that it would work alongside other enforcement bodies to remove illegal trading activities and structures on highways, road medians, walkways and setbacks within the Alaba Rago axis.

According to the statement, the corridor has increasingly become a source of concern due to environmental degradation, traffic obstruction, safety hazards and security challenges affecting residents, commuters and visitors entering Nigeria through the Seme border route.

The enforcement exercise will target makeshift shops, illegal structures, mini brothels, used-plastic collection points, indiscriminate waste disposal sites and other activities considered violations of environmental and public safety laws.

Speaking during a sensitisation campaign in the area, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, urged affected traders and occupants to relocate voluntarily within the stipulated period to avoid sanctions.

He described the Alaba Rago section of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, also known as the ECOWAS Road, as a critical gateway that must be protected from activities capable of undermining public safety and the state’s urban development goals.

“Lagos State cannot continue to overlook the level of illegal activities and environmental hazards in the area. The situation is inconsistent with the status of a modern megacity, and the time has come to enforce the law,” Akerele stated.

He noted that the government had engaged stakeholders through consultations and public awareness campaigns before deciding to commence enforcement.

The Taskforce chairman warned that any individual found trading illegally on highways, walkways or road setbacks after the expiration of the 72-hour notice would have their goods confiscated and could face prosecution.

Akerele reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining environmental order, public safety and security across Lagos in line with the administration’s THEMES Plus Agenda.

Lagos State has sealed Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island and Foodies Restaurant in Lekki Phase 1 over improper wastewater disposal into public drains, intensifying enforcement against environmental violations across the state.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, through his official X account.

The enforcement followed investigations which revealed that both establishments discharged untreated wastewater into drainage systems, causing pollution, foul odour, and public health concerns despite previous warnings.

According to Wahab, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) shut Balmoral Convention Centre after authorities discovered raw sewage was being pumped directly into public drains, alongside wastewater overflow from a blocked sewage chamber.

The agency said the violations created severe environmental pollution, drainage contamination, and persistent public nuisance in the area.

“Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, sealed off Balmoral Convention Centre, Victoria Island over indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the public drain via the use of a pumping machine and unattended wastewater spillage from a blocked sewage chamber causing public nuisance and foul smell,” he stated.

Foodies Restaurant, located at Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase 1, was also sealed for discharging untreated wastewater containing fats and oils into public drains.

The agency noted that the restaurant’s actions contributed to blocked drainage channels, environmental pollution, and repeated nuisance despite earlier compliance warnings.

The development is part of a broader enforcement drive by Lagos authorities against residential and commercial properties violating wastewater management regulations.

In January 2026, the state sealed a residential estate on Ladipo Omotesho Street, Lekki Phase 1, over environmental nuisance and obstruction of enforcement officials.

Similarly, in September 2025, EMCEL Court Phase I and Well Stock Apartments in Ikota GRA, Eti-Osa, were shut for illegal wastewater discharge.

In April 2026, Viva Bella Court II in Lekki Peninsula was sealed for deliberate release of untreated wastewater and septic tank spillage into public drains.

Lagos State recently resumed its monthly environmental sanitation exercise on April 25, 2026, as part of efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness and reduce flooding risks.

The exercise is backed by enforcement measures to ensure compliance, with penalties including fines and up to three months imprisonment for illegal dumping and littering.

The Lagos State Government has launched a major clearance operation at Tejuosho Market in Yaba after traders repeatedly ignored several warnings to vacate walkways, setbacks and public roads.

The enforcement, led by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, began on Monday and follows months of petitions and failed engagement efforts with traders who allegedly converted public spaces into an illegal market corridor.

According to the Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy at the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI), Ajayi Lukman, officials had served multiple notices to the traders over the past three months, but the traders continued to obstruct traffic and violate environmental regulations.

He said the decision to finally clear the area became necessary after traders abandoned their designated shops and blocked two out of three lanes, forcing motorists to struggle through a single narrow passage.

“Their executives even came today to apologise, but the operation will continue. There is no going back,” Lukman stated.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the move aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda to maintain a clean, orderly and safe environment across Lagos.

He emphasized that public spaces must remain free of obstruction and that the state will intensify enforcement to ensure environmental compliance.

Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), also warned that activities such as open urination, open defecation, and indiscriminate waste disposal continue to threaten air quality and public health in parts of the state. The Lagos State Government has demolished 17 illegal buildings in Oral Estate II, Lekki, as part of efforts to restore the Right of Way along the Ikota River and mitigate growing flood risks.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who led the inspection, condemned the encroachments, warning that private developers were narrowing river channels to create and sell plots, endangering surrounding communities.

“Flooding in Lagos can’t be eliminated but must be managed through responsible land use. Destroying wetlands and blocking drainage channels makes that impossible,” Wahab said.

Stop-work and seal orders were also issued at Partibons Homes Estate and Bee-Forth Estate Phase 2, where illegal reclamation activities were ongoing. Wahab noted that natural drainage systems like Channels 156 and 157, designed to direct stormwater to the Lagoon, have been compromised by unapproved developments.

The tour was conducted in coordination with the Ministry of Transportation, ahead of the Green Rail Line project. Transportation Commissioner Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi noted that auto dealers encroaching on wetlands and powerline corridors along the Lekki-Epe Expressway had been served notices, stressing the importance of preserving infrastructure corridors.

Officials also visited the Agodogba Collector Drain project at Parkview Estate, which is expected to provide major flood relief once completed.

The state government has pledged continued enforcement to restore wetlands and protect Lagos’ long-term environmental and infrastructure plans.
