FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has approved ₦31.49 billion contracts for the installation of solar and modular hybrid solar streetlights across critical locations in the Federal Capital Territory.

The approval was disclosed by Mary Ahmadu, the overseeing Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), following the FCT Administration Executive Council meeting chaired by Wike in Abuja.

According to Ahmadu, the council approved the streetlight contracts as part of measures to improve urban infrastructure, enhance nighttime visibility and strengthen security across major corridors in the nation’s capital.

FCT Approves More Infrastructure Contracts

Ahmadu said the council also ratified several contracts covering environmental sanitation, sewage management and maintenance of public facilities across the FCT.

The council ratified contracts worth ₦5.96 billion for the extension of solid waste collection and management services across 40 delineated districts.

She said the contracts covered the period from March 1 to November 16, 2025.

The council also ratified a ₦2.21 billion contract for the operation and maintenance of the Wupa Basin Sewage Treatment Plant for a 24-month period, according to the statement.

More Funds Approved for Facility Maintenance

Ahmadu said the council further ratified contracts for routine maintenance and management of facilities across selected FCTA departments and public buildings.

The contracts were valued at ₦1.52 billion and ₦106.16 million respectively.

Another ₦488.39 million contract was ratified for the evacuation and routine maintenance of communal waste collection points along Umar Musa Yar’Adua Way.

The project is to be executed for a two-year period under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board.

Wike Administration Targets Cleaner, Safer Abuja

Ahmadu said the approved projects were designed to improve public safety, strengthen environmental sanitation and maintain infrastructure and public facilities across the FCT.

She said the execution of the contracts would also support efforts to sustain the aesthetic standards of Abuja.

The solar streetlight project is expected to improve visibility across key locations, while the environmental contracts are aimed at strengthening waste management and sanitation in the capital.

Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on residents to embrace proper waste sorting and sanitation practices to support efficient waste evacuation and help curb the spread of communicable diseases.

She made the appeal on Saturday while monitoring the sixth edition of the state’s reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of sustainable sanitation at the community level, noting that effective waste management is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

She said separating waste before disposal would make collection and evacuation easier while encouraging residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.

According to her, sanitation goes beyond cleaning streets and neighbourhoods, as it also plays an important role in protecting public health and creating sustainable communities.

She also acknowledged the need for the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to improve its waste evacuation operations, stressing that sustained collaboration between residents and government agencies was necessary to achieve better results.

“LAWMA needs to be up and doing. We acknowledge that there are areas where we need to improve, but it can only get better,” she said, while also urging residents to properly sort and dispose of their waste.

The governor’s wife commended residents of Oshodi-Isolo, particularly women and children, for their participation in the sanitation exercise. She was accompanied by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, Special Adviser on Environment, Mr Rotimi Akodu, and other government officials.

However, residents of Olowora and Eweje streets raised concerns over what they described as prolonged accumulation of refuse, alleging that waste had not been evacuated from their communities for about six months.

Mrs Adeola Lawal, a resident of Olowora, appealed to the state government and waste management authorities to improve monitoring of waste collection and respond quickly whenever refuse begins to accumulate. She warned that prolonged exposure to waste could create serious health concerns.

Another resident, Mr Julius Moye of Mafoluku, said residents had continued to pay their Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste collection bills but expressed concern about the continued presence of refuse in the area.

Moye urged the authorities to ensure regular evacuation, stressing that early intervention would help prevent the situation from developing into a wider public health problem.

Mr Charles Nwobodo similarly called for a more proactive approach from the government and relevant waste management agencies. He urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly while calling on authorities to ensure that collected waste was evacuated promptly.

The residents appealed to the state government to strengthen waste collection and evacuation in Olowora and Eweje, particularly in communities where residents regularly pay for waste collection services.

The monitored streets included Adisa Ajibulu, Eweje, Makinde, Abeokuta and Olowora.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to occupants of shanties, makeshift structures and illegal trading points along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, warning that a massive demolition exercise will commence next week.

The governor announced the directive on Saturday after leading the monthly environmental sanitation exercise alongside his wife, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, across communities in Surulere Local Government Area.

Speaking with journalists after the exercise, Sanwo-Olu said the state government would deploy enforcement teams to clear all illegal structures along the corridor, stretching from Orile-Iganmu to Okokomaiko.

“This is the final notice to everyone occupying the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. From next week, we are coming to clear the entire median. Everything there will go. Every illegal structure will be removed,” the governor said.

He stressed that the highway median was not designated for markets or residential structures, noting that the government would protect the corridor considering the huge public investment committed to the road project.

“It is a 10-lane highway built with taxpayers’ money. We will not allow anyone to turn an international gateway into a slum. We are deploying thousands of personnel to ensure compliance,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve waste management across the state, disclosing that the government would soon add 150 compactors to its waste collection fleet while deploying waste tricycles to underserved communities.

According to him, the state is investing in long-term waste management infrastructure, including a modern material recovery and recycling facility expected to process about 4,250 metric tonnes of waste daily.

The governor urged residents to support government initiatives by disposing of waste responsibly and paying waste collection bills promptly.

“Waste management is not the responsibility of government alone. Residents must also play their part by paying for waste collection services to enable operators provide efficient services,” he said.

He further encouraged parents to involve their children in environmental sanitation activities, describing cleanliness as essential to building a healthier and more sustainable Lagos.

Meanwhile, during an inspection of the Olusosun Landfill, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the state was transitioning from the traditional “collect-and-dump” waste disposal model to a circular system that converts waste into valuable resources.

Wahab explained that the planned material recovery facility in Ikorodu would receive waste from transfer loading stations and process thousands of tonnes daily into reusable products and energy.

“We can no longer sustain the waste management system we have practised for decades. Waste must become a resource for wealth creation, energy generation and environmental sustainability,” he said.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has released four telephone numbers for residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to report cases of uncleared refuse across Abuja.

The move is part of efforts to tackle the growing waste management challenge in the territory and ensure that sanitation contractors carry out their duties promptly and effectively.

Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, urged residents to actively participate in monitoring sanitation activities by submitting photographic and video evidence of uncleared refuse.

Olayinka explained that such reports should be sent via WhatsApp, with clear details of the location provided to enable the authorities identify the responsible waste management contractors.

He said the initiative is aimed at strengthening accountability and improving environmental cleanliness across the FCT.

According to him, residents can report sanitation lapses using the following phone numbers: 08038643087, 07011073406, 07011255710 and 09114843425.

The FCTA reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment and called on residents to support government efforts by promptly reporting sanitation issues.

The Environmental Taskforce in Edo State on Saturday arrested 50 persons in Benin for violating sanitation laws.

The new NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Saidi Akintayo, led the operation across areas including Sapele Road, Ekiosa Market, Siloko Road, and New Benin Market.

Akintayo said the exercise was to enforce compliance with the state’s monthly sanitation directive and promote a clean, healthy environment. He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to supporting government efforts on environmental hygiene and public health.

The suspects were arraigned before a mobile court at the Egor Local Government Secretariat.

Oredo Council Chairman, Mr. Gabriel Idusere, who joined the exercise, commended residents for their cooperation and assured that measures had been put in place for prompt refuse evacuation.
