The African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 3,398 votes. A total of 2,336 votes were rejected, and the total votes cast stood at 65,197. Registered voters in AMAC numbered 837,338, with 65,676 accredited voters participating.

Maikalangu’s victory was confirmed after meeting the requirements of the law, with the election results certified by INEC collation officer Andrew Abue. Other candidates received significantly lower votes, including Agbon Vaniah (Accord) – 403 votes, Nemiebika Tamunomiesam (Action Alliance) – 108 votes, Eze Chukwu (APGA) – 1,111 votes, and Simon Obinna (SDP) – 2,185 votes, among others.

The APC collation agent, Gambo Babale, described the election and collation process as credible and transparent. He noted that the PDP secured two ward councillor positions in Karu and Karishi, reflecting fairness in the exercise.

Observers and party agents from ADC, APC, APGA, YPP, and NNPP were present to witness the collation and signing of result sheets. Maikalangu’s victory is seen as a mandate to deliver more dividends of democracy to AMAC residents and a signal of APC’s readiness for the 2027 elections.

The polls are widely seen as a critical test-run ahead of the 2027 general elections.

FCT Polls: 1.68 Million Voters Expected

The commission will simultaneously conduct bye-elections in:

Ahoada East II and Khana II State Constituencies (Rivers State)

The FCT elections are particularly significant because they are the only local government-level polls directly conducted by INEC.

Key Reforms Under the 2026 Electoral Act

The 2026 Electoral Act introduces notable reforms that INEC must implement in real time, including:

Statutory entrenchment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS)

Strengthened transparency and result transmission procedures

These provisions are expected to enhance credibility, transparency, and real-time accountability in the electoral process.

Wike Declares Work-Free Day, Movement Restricted

According to Wike, the measures are aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

“We must show the world that we are a mature and responsible electorate, capable of conducting ourselves with dignity and decorum,” he stated.

He described the president’s assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 as a demonstration of commitment to credible elections.

A Strategic Rehearsal for 2027

Political observers view the elections as a strategic rehearsal for the 2027 general elections, particularly in testing:

Technology deployment (BVAS & IReV)

With rising public interest and increased scrutiny, INEC’s performance this weekend could shape confidence in Nigeria’s next general election cycle.
