A late-night fire outbreak has destroyed property worth about ₦350 million at De Bently Hotel, after flames engulfed the four-storey building in Nigeria’s capital city.

The (FFS) confirmed that the incident occurred on March 9, 2026, at the hotel located in the area of .

Firefighters contain blaze

In a statement issued Tuesday by the Service’s National Public Relations Officer, , the fire was reported at about 8:28 pm, prompting an immediate response from firefighters.

Personnel from the were quickly deployed and arrived at the scene by 8:38 pm to begin firefighting operations.

The response was led by the Controller General of the Fire Service, , who personally coordinated the emergency operation.

Firefighters used multiple water jets, appliances, and tenders to suppress the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Property worth ₦650m saved

According to the Fire Service, the estimated value of property at the hotel facility was about ₦1 billion.

Emergency responders were able to save property worth approximately ₦650 million, while about ₦350 million was destroyed by the fire.

Fortunately, officials confirmed that no deaths or injuries were recorded during the incident.

Possible gas explosion suspected

Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been triggered by a gas explosion, although investigators say the exact cause has not yet been determined.

Police patrol teams and additional firefighting units were deployed to the scene to provide security and operational support during the emergency.

Investigation underway

The Fire Service has since deployed a team of investigators to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

Authorities also urged hotel operators, businesses, and members of the public to comply with fire safety regulations, particularly when handling gas cylinders and other flammable materials.

Officials stressed that early reporting of emergencies can significantly reduce damage during fire outbreaks.

A fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday at the Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja, damaging a section of the popular shopping complex.

According to eyewitnesses, the blaze began around 3 a.m., affecting only the Adidas Sports outlet within the mall. The cause of the incident had not been determined as of the time of filing this report.

Firefighters from the Federal Fire Service, the Berger Fire Department, and the FCT Fire Service were swiftly mobilized to the scene, alongside police officers who helped secure the premises.

A resident of Jabi, identified as Saliu, confirmed that the fire was contained before it could spread to other sections of the mall. “The fire started around 3 a.m. this morning. Thankfully, no life was lost and no injuries were recorded,” he said.

The Federal Capital Territory Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, also confirmed the incident, noting that officers were deployed immediately after receiving a distress call.

“We got a call around 3:40 a.m. and dispatched our men to the scene to maintain order and prevent any possible looting,” Adeh stated.

This incident comes shortly after another fire outbreak at the Old Karu Market in Abuja, where goods worth millions of naira were destroyed before firefighters managed to bring the flames under control.

Despite these tragic figures, the service reported saving property worth N1.94 trillion and rescuing 30,890 lives during fire-related emergencies last year.

The Controller General of the FFS, Abdulganiyu Jaji, shared these statistics during a press conference at the service’s headquarters in Abuja. Jaji emphasized the heightened risk of fire incidents during the harmattan season due to low humidity, urging operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling stations, and gas cylinder users to adhere strictly to safety protocols.

Jaji outlined the FFS’s plans to improve efficiency in 2025 by leveraging advanced technologies such as the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) and the Fire Alarm App, N-Alert, to enhance emergency response and fire prevention efforts.

He also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support in approving the procurement of state-of-the-art firefighting equipment and the remodelling of the National Fire Academy. Jaji stressed the need for Nigerians to support the repeal and re-enactment of the Fire Service Act of 1963, which would help modernize the agency and enhance its service delivery.
