President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the Federal Government is executing infrastructure projects on an unprecedented scale, with more than 2,700 kilometres of highways and major roads currently under construction, reconstruction or rehabilitation across Nigeria.

Speaking during a nationwide address marking the third anniversary of his administration, the President said the investments are aimed at improving connectivity, boosting economic activity, creating jobs and enhancing living standards.

2,700km of Roads Under Construction Nationwide

Tinubu said major road projects are ongoing across the country, including:

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway

Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano corridor

East-West Road

He noted that several sections of these projects are already completed or nearing completion, with the goal of improving regional trade and strengthening national logistics networks.

The administration says the road programme is part of a broader effort to modernise transport infrastructure and address long-standing connectivity challenges affecting economic growth.

Renewed Hope Housing Programme Delivers Over 10,000 Units

In the housing sector, Tinubu said the Renewed Hope Housing Programme and the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) are delivering more than 10,000 housing units across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Major Renewed Hope Cities in Abuja, Lagos and Kano are also progressing steadily.

According to the President, the housing programme has generated over 300,000 jobs, largely through construction-related activities, materials supply and associated services.

Energy Sector Investments Expand Refining and Gas Capacity

Tinubu disclosed that the $5 billion Nigeria LNG Train 7 project is nearing completion, with expectations of boosting gas production and export capacity.

He also said ongoing investments in modular and large-scale refineries are reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products and easing pressure on foreign exchange.

On electricity, the President said reforms are being implemented to address legacy debts, expand transmission infrastructure and support renewable energy development.

Rail Modernisation to Boost Connectivity

The administration also confirmed continued rail modernisation projects aimed at improving national logistics and transport efficiency.

Tinubu said improved rail systems will reduce transportation costs, strengthen economic integration and enhance movement of goods and passengers across the country.

Infrastructure Linked to Economic Reforms

The President linked the infrastructure drive to broader economic reforms introduced since 2023, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification.

He acknowledged the inflationary impact of the reforms but maintained that they have strengthened public finances, improved investor confidence and created a more stable economic foundation.

Impact on Housing and Urban Development

Experts say the infrastructure push could significantly reshape Nigeria’s housing and real estate sector by opening new growth corridors and increasing demand for residential developments.

Improved roads, rail systems and energy access are expected to drive urban expansion, raise land values and stimulate private sector investment in housing.

President Tinubu’s announcement underscores a large-scale infrastructure agenda spanning roads, housing, rail and energy. With over 2,700 kilometres of road projects underway and major housing and energy investments in progress, the administration says it is laying the foundation for long-term economic transformation.

As implementation continues, attention will remain on delivery timelines, financing sustainability and the real impact on households, businesses and national development outcomes.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), has initiated the construction of a 168-room ultra-modern hostel for medical students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The groundbreaking and site handover took place on Wednesday at the proposed site within the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.

The project, executed by Colton Construction Limited, is designed to house two students per room across three floors, marking the first hostel of its kind at UNILAG.

Dr. Anthony Ajulo, CEO of Colton Construction, said the initiative aligns with the government’s objectives of boosting the number of doctors and nurses trained annually in Nigeria.

“This is a modern, self-contained student hostel. It will significantly aid in producing 1,000 doctors per year at UNILAG. Completion is expected within 24 months,” Ajulo stated.

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges

Dr. Collins Balogun, Principal Partner at Colton Construction, emphasized that upgrading student accommodation is critical to mitigating brain drain and increasing medical graduate numbers nationwide.

“The President’s directive is for universities to produce at least 20,000 medical doctors annually. Proper infrastructure, including hostels close to hospitals, is vital to achieving this goal,” he said.

University Response

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunshola, praised the initiative, noting that infrastructure constraints had previously limited student intake and healthcare workforce growth.

“We need more healthcare personnel in Nigeria. The new hostel will support increased enrollment and training of medical students, ultimately strengthening the healthcare system,” she said.

Project Significance

Project Type: 100% Federal Government-funded via TETFUND

Rooms: 168, self-contained

Floors: 3

Occupancy: 2 students per room

Expected Completion: 24 months

Objective: Expand medical workforce and improve student living standards

The hostel forms part of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reflects a long-term plan to expand healthcare infrastructure across Nigeria. Similar projects are expected in other universities to increase the national supply of qualified medical professionals.

MAN’s Director General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, stressed that the association is not attempting to influence the contract award but is appealing for procurement decisions that place national interest above foreign patronage. He explained that prioritising local firms would help create jobs, ease pressure on foreign exchange, boost tax revenues, and strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base.

Ajayi-Kadir maintained that Nigerian companies have the expertise and facilities to produce Clear Vu fencing materials of international quality, insisting that indigenous manufacturers should not be sidelined in favour of foreign suppliers.

“The Nigeria First Policy, reaffirmed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has renewed confidence among domestic manufacturers. It builds on Executive Orders, which mandate government ministries and agencies to give preference to locally produced goods and services,” he noted.

While commending ongoing government efforts to upgrade infrastructure, the MAN chief warned that resorting to imports for the Lagos Airport project would undermine stated policies and deny the economy vital benefits such as youth employment, foreign exchange savings, and stronger national security through self-reliance.

He pointed out that in previous projects, Nigerian producers were overlooked despite MAN’s advocacy, with imported fencing materials supplied instead a development he described as discouraging to the nation’s industrial sector.

“This project presents a chance to correct past missteps and to prove that the Nigeria First Policy is more than a slogan. It should be demonstrated through consistent implementation,” Ajayi-Kadir said.

Reaffirming the association’s readiness to work with government in driving inclusive growth, he concluded by urging that the Lagos Airport fencing materials be sourced strictly from capable Nigerian manufacturers.

President Bola Tinubu has praised the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for bringing new life to neglected communities through major infrastructure projects.

The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, spoke during the commissioning of the new Collector Road CN-8. This road connects Arterial Road N-5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way) in Jabi District to Arterial Road N-1 (Olusegun Obasanjo Way) in Dakibiyu District, Abuja.

The road project is part of a 17-day event to mark Tinubu’s second year in office. It also highlights the work of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in pushing for fast and quality infrastructure.

President Tinubu praised Minister Wike for his sense of urgency and focus. He said good infrastructure shows a government’s commitment to its people.

“There is no louder proof of a government’s seriousness than the modernisation of its cities,” Tinubu said. “Infrastructure is more than concrete and steel. It shows leadership, vision, and care for citizens.”

He explained that the new roads will reduce traffic, help local businesses, and improve access to schools and hospitals.

“This is what we mean by Renewed Hope,” Tinubu said. “It is not empty talk but real action that changes lives. We want development in every part of Abuja, not just in the city centre.”

Tinubu promised to continue supporting the FCTA to deliver more projects on time and to high standards.

In his speech, Minister Wike thanked the President for his support. He said the roads were in very bad shape before.

“Your Excellency, this road was terrible,” Wike said. “We awarded the contract in September last year and started work in October. Today, we are proud to commission it. Thank you for your support, and we ask for even more.”
