The Katsina State Government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has commissioned a series of development projects aimed at strengthening climate resilience, promoting peace, restoring livelihoods and supporting internally displaced persons across the state.

The projects include 152 housing units for internally displaced persons (IDPs), a Climate Peace Hub, a rehabilitated cattle market and a solar mini-grid energy system designed to expand access to clean and reliable electricity.

The interventions were unveiled during a commissioning ceremony attended by government officials, development partners, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, private sector representatives and members of the media.

Speaking at the event, Governor Dikko Umar Radda reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with development partners to address insecurity, climate challenges and economic vulnerability.

“Katsina State stands ready to deepen that partnership. We will continue to work hand in hand with UNDP, GIZ, the Norwegian Government and every partner committed to human dignity to address the underlying drivers of insecurity, expand livelihoods, build climate resilience and empower our women and youth,” the governor said.

The projects are being implemented under UNDP’s integrated development framework, which combines peacebuilding, climate resilience, governance, energy access and economic recovery initiatives to deliver sustainable development outcomes.

The Mass Housing Project, delivered under the Prevention Facility Project, provides permanent housing solutions for vulnerable and conflict-affected families, helping to improve living conditions and support community recovery.

Speaking during the commissioning, UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative, Elsie G. Attafuah, said the investments were designed to address the root causes of instability while creating opportunities for affected communities.

“The 152 housing units provide more than shelter. They provide dignity, stability and a place that families can once again call home. The rehabilitated cattle market and veterinary clinic help restore livelihoods and support local economic activity,” she said.

Attafuah added that the Climate Peace Hub would serve as a platform for climate-security coordination, conflict prevention, early warning systems and community engagement.

According to her, the facility will also provide women and youths with opportunities to acquire green skills in renewable energy and climate-smart solutions, preparing them for emerging opportunities in the green economy.

The initiative is supported by the governments of Germany and Norway, which have partnered with UNDP to advance climate security and resilience-building programmes in Northwest Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, Annett Günther commended the Katsina State Government for its commitment to sustainable development and resilience-building efforts.

The solar mini-grid project, implemented under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) programme, is expected to provide electricity to homes, schools, healthcare facilities and businesses in underserved communities.

Representing the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Dr. Bala Tyoden said the initiative would enhance economic activities and improve living standards in beneficiary communities.

He noted that the Africa Minigrid Programme demonstrates how clean energy can support businesses, create jobs and improve quality of life while promoting climate-resilient development.

The Katsina State Government and its partners expressed optimism that the integrated investments would strengthen social cohesion, improve livelihoods and create sustainable pathways for peace and prosperity across the state.

A major leap towards a sustainable energy future has been set in motion as the European Union (EU) and Germany announce a strategic initiative to boost renewable energy development in Nigeria.

This groundbreaking move, unveiled in Lagos, is part of a broader effort to tackle the country’s electricity challenges, particularly in rural communities where access to power remains a luxury.

Under the Nigeria Country Window initiative, funding will be directed toward innovative clean energy solutions that align with Nigeria’s unique economic and infrastructural landscape. The initiative is spearheaded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and will work in synergy with other donor-supported programs, such as the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), which has been co-funded by the EU and Germany since 2013.

Speaking at the launch, Inga Stefanowicz, Team Leader for Green and Digital Economy at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the significance of this investment. She underscored that the EU is deeply committed to accelerating Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy, highlighting that stable electricity is not just a necessity but a catalyst for economic growth. Through GET.invest Nigeria, the goal is to break financing barriers and make clean energy accessible to businesses and households across the country.

Representing Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power, Permanent Secretary Temitope Dina echoed this sentiment, stressing that a greener energy landscape is no longer a choice but a necessity. She stated that with the right investments, policies, and technologies, Nigeria can build an energy system that is not only cleaner but also more resilient and inclusive. She highlighted that reducing reliance on fossil fuels and embracing renewables would not only improve energy access but also position Nigeria as a responsible player in global environmental conservation efforts.

Adding weight to the call for investments, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, urged investors to seize this golden opportunity. He expressed confidence in GET.invest Nigeria, calling it a vital tool for tackling the nation’s electricity crisis while also ensuring a high return on investment. According to him, the initiative is a testament to Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainability, and resilience.

Germany, a long-standing partner in Nigeria’s energy transition, reinforced its dedication through the words of Weert Börner, Consul General at the German Consulate General in Lagos. He noted that Germany’s involvement in GET.invest Nigeria is part of a larger effort to foster sustainable economic development and strengthen Nigeria’s clean energy sector. By incentivizing private sector investments in renewable energy, the initiative is expected to unlock new opportunities, create jobs, and fuel economic prosperity.

AIHS 2025

Lawrence Efanga Edeke, the Coordinator of GET.invest Nigeria, provided deeper insight into the initiative’s objectives. He clarified that while GET.invest Nigeria is not a single solution to the country’s energy woes, it is a crucial stepping stone toward mobilizing the large-scale investments needed to meet Nigeria’s climate and energy targets. By engaging project developers, financial institutions, and policymakers, the initiative will drive meaningful progress in renewable energy expansion.

In addition to financial support, GET.invest Nigeria will offer market intelligence, capacity-building programs, and industry mobilization efforts to strengthen local stakeholders. This comprehensive approach is designed to not only increase energy access but also promote security, economic growth, and an improved quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

With backing from key international partners—including the EU, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Austria—the initiative is set to transform Nigeria’s energy landscape. As funding flows in and projects take shape, the hope is that this collaborative effort will mark the beginning of a cleaner, more efficient, and more prosperous energy future for Nigeria.

Germany has unveiled a groundbreaking online visa application platform aimed at streamlining the process for Nigerians and others seeking opportunities to work, study, or reunite with family in the country.

This initiative is part of Germany’s broader strategy to modernize its immigration system and address its critical shortage of skilled workers.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted the urgency behind the reform, emphasizing that Germany’s economy is in dire need of skilled labor to maintain its global competitiveness. According to her, the country faces an annual deficit of at least 400,000 skilled workers, spanning vital sectors such as healthcare, technology, and skilled trades.

Baerbock lamented the barriers posed by outdated bureaucratic processes, stating, “At times like these, we cannot afford to turn away the best talent simply because of cumbersome paper application forms and endlessly long waiting periods. Germany, as one of the world’s largest economies and a modern immigration destination, must offer a visa process that is not just efficient but also cutting-edge, digital, and secure.”

The newly launched online portal is designed to be accessible to applicants globally and offers streamlined access to 28 categories of national visas. It is supported by Germany’s extensive network of 167 visa offices worldwide, ensuring that applicants from every corner of the globe can benefit from this innovation. For Nigerians in particular, the platform opens up an avenue to pursue new career paths, academic aspirations, and family reunification with greater ease.

The portal reflects a significant shift in Germany’s approach to immigration, signaling a commitment to building a more inclusive and responsive system. The digital framework eliminates many of the bottlenecks that previously hindered visa applications, from excessive paperwork to prolonged processing times. Applicants can now navigate the process in a more user-friendly environment, which not only saves time but also reduces the frustration associated with traditional methods.

Germany’s move to simplify visa access aligns with its national ambition to attract the brightest minds and the most capable hands from around the world. Skilled workers are seen as essential to sustaining the nation’s economic growth, particularly in sectors struggling to fill vacancies. The German government has also recognized that the country is in a global competition for talent, with other economies vying for the same pool of skilled professionals. This portal is a proactive step to ensure Germany remains an attractive destination for talent, especially from regions like Africa.

In addition to facilitating visa applications, the portal represents a shift toward a more transparent and efficient immigration process. By digitizing the system, Germany aims to reduce bureaucratic delays while maintaining a secure and organized framework for processing applications. This modernization effort not only benefits applicants but also helps German consulates and visa offices manage the increasing demand for visas in a structured manner.

For Nigerians aspiring to build a life in Germany, this development is a game-changer. The online platform provides a clear and efficient pathway to opportunities that were once bogged down by administrative hurdles. Whether pursuing education, embarking on a career, or reuniting with loved ones, Nigerians can now navigate the visa process with greater confidence and efficiency.

Germany’s investment in a digital visa system underscores the importance of immigration as a cornerstone of its economic and social strategy. By embracing technology and reducing barriers, the country is setting a new standard for how immigration systems can adapt to the demands of a rapidly changing world.

This portal not only represents a practical solution to an immediate labor shortage but also symbolizes a shift in Germany’s perception of immigration—from a bureaucratic challenge to a strategic opportunity. As one of the world’s largest economies, Germany is positioning itself as a welcoming destination for global talent, and this new initiative sends a clear message: the country is open for business, innovation, and new beginnings.
