Speaking in Minna, Yelwa revealed that officials from the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, and the Gombe State government have urgently mobilized to the dam site to assess the situation and explore options to prevent the disaster.

In addressing the press, Yelwa highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that one potential solution involves opening the dam’s spillway gates to release some of the impounded water. However, he warned that this action could pose a significant danger to communities downstream.

“Given the scale of devastation this year, which has impacted critical infrastructure and livelihoods, and in light of predictions of further flooding, we urge the federal government to declare a state of emergency on flooding, particularly in N-HYPPADEC member states,” Yelwa stated.

He disclosed that the current rainy season floods have claimed 200 lives and displaced 208,000 people across 28 states. A staggering 80 percent of these casualties and displacements occurred in N-HYPPADEC catchment states, exacerbated by their locations and the electricity generation activities in these areas.

Yelwa lamented the destruction of homes and farmlands, attributing the situation to poor infrastructure, neglect of environmental guidelines, and ineffective dam management. He warned that the situation could deteriorate further, citing preliminary reports from Benue State, where 634 communities have been affected and nearly 30,000 farmlands have been washed away. Similar impacts were reported in Kebbi, Gombe, Taraba, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Kaduna states.

“This poses a serious threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts towards achieving food security and wealth creation in the country,” Yelwa stressed.

In response to the crisis, Yelwa called for a repositioning of relevant agencies and stakeholders to take proactive measures in containing the flood’s impact and ensuring prompt responses to any further occurrences.

He detailed N-HYPPADEC’s interventions in flood-affected areas, including the construction of a 625-meter hydraulic drainage system in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, a 1.2-kilometre hydraulic drainage system, and a 2.5-kilometre de-silting on a dyke flood plain in Benue State. Additionally, the commission has executed flood control projects in Yauri, Kebbi State, and erosion control projects in Patigi, Kwara State. Housing schemes for about 500 flood victims are also under construction in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, and Kebbi states.

Yelwa concluded by urging communities living along flood plains to remain vigilant and adhere to instructions from relevant authorities to prevent further loss of life and property.

Briefing journalists shortly after the meeting, Commissioner for Information, Mijinyawa Ardo Tilde, announced that the council had approved the total sum of N43.130 billion for an ultra-modern governor’s residence and befitting High Court and House of Assembly complexes.

Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport, Dr Usman Maijama’a Kallamu, provided further details, stating that the ultra-modern high court complex would be constructed at N14 billion, while N14.23 billion and N14.9 billion would be earmarked for the House of Assembly Complex and the ultra-modern governor’s residence, respectively.

The council also approved N10 billion for the construction of roads in four local government areas of the state and the construction of the Gombe State Security, Traffic, and Environmental Corps (GOSTEC) office accommodations.

Contractors are set to be mobilized to site, and work is expected to commence promptly. These projects were approved amidst the current economic hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy, with workers under the local government service in the state yet to start receiving the new minimum wage enjoyed by state civil servants since 2020.

Pensioners, who were initially left out, received foodstuffs as palliatives on Tuesday, including a 5kg bag of rice, maize, and sugar each, and a carton of spaghetti.

In a significant development, Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya distributed compensation checks on Tuesday to 343 property owners affected by the ongoing erosion control project across various communities in the Gombe metropolis suburb.

The compensation amounts were disbursed as part of the State Government’s efforts to address the repercussions of the erosion control initiative.

Governor Yahaya, while presenting the cheques, emphasized the importance of preventing unnecessary encroachment into available lands. The erosion control project, a collaborative effort between the Gombe State Government and the State Project Office of Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL), funded by the World Bank, was initiated in November 2023. The project, valued at over N12 billion, aims to tackle a 21-kilometer gully erosion affecting areas such as the Federal College of Education (Tech) Gombe, Railway, London Mai Dorawa, Malam Inna, Wuro Ledde, Wuro Kesa, and Arawa quarters.

Addressing the recipients during the presentation ceremony, Governor Yahaya expressed the administration’s commitment to ensuring that those affected by the project are adequately compensated for a smooth relocation process. He specified that a total of N389,740,014 has been allocated for compensation to Project Affected Persons and the overall implementation of the Resettlement Action Plan.

Governor Yahaya acknowledged the changing market values for land and assets and affirmed the government’s decision to offer decent compensation to facilitate the affected individuals’ relocation. He urged the beneficiaries to utilize this opportunity effectively.

The Governor highlighted the State Government’s contribution, stating, “Our administration has so far paid the sum of N892,740,114 as a government counterpart contribution to enable the implementation of the FCE(T) Gully Erosion Project.” He also noted the successful execution of the GSU-Mallam Inna gully erosion project under NEWMAP and reiterated the commitment to addressing other gully erosion sites through partnerships with ACReSAL and other stakeholders.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya clarified that the compensation aims to alleviate the inconveniences associated with relocation and provide support for those affected by the erosion control project to rebuild their lives in their new environments.
