Speaking during a ceremony in Umuahia, the Governor revealed that the pilot phase has commenced at the newly constructed Model Smart School in local layout communities, marking a shift toward tech-driven public amenities. The executive administration clarified that the modern facility is engineered to replace decaying colonial-era building models, serving as an urban anchor designed to raise property values and attract long-term residential real estate investments to the surrounding region.

The multi-million naira educational hub features fully digitized learning infrastructure, including interactive electronic smartboards, a modern digital library, an advanced science laboratory, and an information technology lab. State administrative officials emphasized that providing premium public utilities is a prerequisite to resolving local real estate stagnation and reducing the regional housing deficit. By building high-quality, tech-integrated school networks directly into developing residential zones, the state government aims to lower the high development costs private property firms typically face when establishing self-sustaining satellite towns.

Moving forward, the Abia State Ministry of Education has announced plans to rapidly replicate this smart infrastructure blueprint across all 17 Local Government Areas over the next fiscal cycle. Educational administrators and urban planning consultants reiterated that equipping public institutions with independent solar power arrays and sustainable water supply systems ensures long-term operational resilience. The state executive council urged private real estate developers and local community layout boards to actively protect these public investments, noting that modern civic infrastructure remains the most reliable driver for inclusive economic expansion and sustainable urban development.

Sited at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State, the newly unveiled technological facility is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial production. The landmark development came to fruition through a collaborative partnership involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and the Abia State Government.

During the official inauguration ceremony, Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, characterized the center as a vital mechanism for regional industrial transformation. He emphasized that the introduction of the advanced hub aligns closely with ongoing efforts to build a resilient national economy through entrepreneurship and technology transfer. The administration noted that domestic higher institutions must transition into vibrant centers for job creation and enterprise development to help achieve long-term economic growth targets across the federation.

In his address, the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, expressed gratitude over the strategic positioning of the facility, describing it as a validation of the state’s potential to drive commercial progress. International development representatives also highlighted the project as a critical vehicle for empowering local youth by merging engineering capabilities with business enterprise. Concurrently, the global development agency revealed an expansive fund-mobilization goal aimed at constructing an extensive African startup ecosystem designed to benefit multiple growing ventures and elevate millions of livelihoods over the next decade.

The assurance was given on Tuesday by Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Chief of Staff to Governor Alex Otti, during a peaceful protest staged by women at the Government House, Umuahia. The protesters, led by the Women’s Wing of Amalato Ukwu, called for urgent government action amid repeated arrests of their husbands and children by security forces, which has left many families displaced and living in fear.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Ezinne Chief Chidi Okoro Amalato Ukwu described the community’s suffering, alleging land encroachment, crop destruction, and unlawful detentions.

“Our land has been taken from us. Every day, they come to arrest our children and husbands. Many are living in the bush, and some detainees have spent over 21 days in custody without family access,” she said.

The dispute reportedly stems from a historical resettlement arrangement, where the Amanato community had accommodated the Umuacha people, who later laid claim to the land. The conflict, ongoing for decades, has disrupted normal life, including farming and access to water sources.

Pastor Ajagba assured the protesters that their concerns would be conveyed to the Governor, stating:

“A written document on the matter will help guide appropriate action. Be assured that the government will look into this issue.”

Similarly, Hon. Acho Obioma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, reiterated the administration’s commitment to justice, peaceful coexistence, and security for all residents.

The State Government emphasized it would investigate thoroughly, including consultations with the Umuacha Umuobi community, to achieve an amicable resolution.

The Federal Government has announced plans to commission two critical segments of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway by the end of 2025, signaling progress in infrastructure delivery across Nigeria’s South-East region.

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made the disclosure during an inspection tour of road projects in Abia State. He was received by Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

According to the minister, the Umuahia-Aba and Aba-Port Harcourt sections of the highway are nearing completion and are scheduled for inauguration in December and November, respectively. The projects are being executed by Arab Contractors and other construction firms under federal supervision.

“These two corridors are central to connecting key commercial hubs in the South-East and South-South,” Umahi said, adding that the completion would ease transportation and trade activities across the region.

He commended Governor Otti for facilitating right-of-way clearance and cooperating with federal agencies to accelerate the work. “This is a prime example of how collaboration beyond political lines can result in real benefits for the people,” he said.

The minister also used the opportunity to highlight other ongoing federal road projects in the region, including the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, and the newly awarded Afikpo Road.

However, Umahi acknowledged financial constraints, noting that the administration inherited over 2,600 federal road contracts valued at ₦13 trillion in 2023—a figure that has since increased to more than ₦20 trillion. To address this, he encouraged state governments to rehabilitate certain roads with the option of introducing toll systems to recover costs, although such interventions will not be refunded by the federal government.

Governor Otti, in his remarks, stressed that infrastructure development should be driven by governance rather than politics. He praised the renewed attention given to road networks in Abia, pointing to the completed Port Harcourt Road in Aba as a transformative milestone.

“The improved roads have already cut down travel time and enhanced the movement of goods, as confirmed by freight operators,” Otti noted.

The Minister concluded by revealing plans for President Bola Tinubu to visit Abia in the coming months to commission completed projects. He described the president as “a man of infrastructure,” adding that regional development was at the heart of the administration’s broader agenda.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to continuing partnerships aimed at fast-tracking infrastructure delivery and improving economic opportunities in the region.

The Abia State Government is set to launch a 25-year master plan for Greater Aba to guide long-term development in the state’s commercial capital. The initiative aims to transform Aba into a modern, resilient, and economically vibrant city.

The announcement was made in Umuahia by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a media briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Kanu, the master plan was developed through a partnership between the Greater Aba Development Authority and UN-Habitat. It will address key challenges such as urban planning, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.

The blueprint is structured around four core pillars:

1.Transportation and Infrastructure: Upgrades to road networks, city connectivity, and transportation systems.

2.Economic Development: Expansion and formalization of commercial and industrial zones within Aba.

3.Sustainable Urban Growth: Planned urban expansion with a focus on environmental sustainability.

4.Flood Control and Resilience: Implementation of flood management systems and terrestrial resilience measures.

In addition, the Commissioner revealed that 91,227 residents have enrolled in the Abia State Social Health Insurance Scheme. The scheme, initially targeted at the formal sector, will now be extended to the informal sector following executive council approval.

Prince Kanu also announced the commissioning of a fully operational Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Abia State Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia. The facility is expected to improve emergency care and support advanced surgical procedures.

On education infrastructure, the Commissioner stated that the first phase of the power restoration project at Abia State University (ABSU) has been completed. Power has been restored to several campus areas. He confirmed that the second phase will commence once approvals are secured. Renovation of student hostels is ongoing, with electrical and plumbing works completed and the buildings set for handover soon.

Addressing security concerns, Kanu acknowledged recent incidents in Umunneochi and assured the public that security agencies have been placed on full alert. The state government has committed to strengthening security across all affected areas.

Speaking further, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, noted that the state has initiated the process of transferring regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the newly established Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority.
