The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to meet its longstanding demands.

The association’s president, Dr Mohammad Suleiman, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday through NARD’s official account.

According to Suleiman, the decision followed the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.

He said the strike became inevitable after several unfulfilled promises and unimplemented agreements reached with the government despite multiple dialogues and appeals.

“We embark on this total and indefinite strike with a heavy heart, aware of the hardship it will cause patients. However, our demands are not selfish or politically driven. They focus on saving Nigeria’s collapsing health system and ensuring citizens receive quality care,” Suleiman stated.

He added that poor working conditions, unpaid arrears, inadequate facilities, and excessive workload have pushed many doctors to frustration and forced some to seek better opportunities abroad.

“Our fight is for a system where doctors can work in safe, supportive environments. An overworked and underpaid doctor cannot deliver optimal care,” he said.

The association listed its demands to include fair remuneration, improved infrastructure, payment of outstanding salaries, adequate staffing, and better welfare for medical personnel.

Suleiman called on Nigerians, civil society organisations, labour unions, and traditional leaders to support the strike, stressing that the action is aimed at rebuilding a functional healthcare system.

He appealed to the government to urgently address the demands so hospitals can reopen and doctors return to work.

Meanwhile, resident doctors in Abuja have announced their decision to join the strike over unresolved issues with the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

NARD had earlier notified the government of its plan to begin the industrial action on November 1, 2025.

The association has maintained that unless the Federal Government urgently addresses its concerns, medical services nationwide will be suspended.

“The ultimatum ends on July 23. If our demands are not met by then, we may have no choice but to commence a nationwide strike,” the president of the association stated, expressing deep frustration over what he described as the government’s slow response to critical issues affecting the healthcare sector.

At the heart of the dispute is a controversial circular released by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which revised allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal service. The association strongly opposes the circular, claiming it undermines previous agreements and fails to reflect the realities of the profession.

“We rejected that circular outright. It contains provisions that were not mutually agreed upon and cannot be imposed unilaterally. Any directive affecting our members should emerge from proper consultation,” the president said.

He explained that the NMA has held engagements with relevant ministries and agencies, including the Ministries of Health, Labour, and Finance, in an effort to resolve the matter without resorting to industrial action.

“A recent meeting with top government officials gave us some hope, but further dialogue was postponed due to national mourning. Time is running out, and we are yet to reconvene. If nothing happens soon, a strike may be inevitable.”

The president further emphasized that the NMA’s demands are not only about allowances but also about the survival of the health system and the dignity of medical professionals who continue to work under increasingly difficult conditions.

“We are not just fighting for ourselves. We are fighting for a functional health system that retains skilled professionals and delivers quality care to Nigerians.”

Meanwhile, a state chapter of the association expressed its dissatisfaction in strong terms, reiterating its rejection of the circular and demanding that the government act swiftly to meet all outstanding demands.

With tensions rising, all eyes are now on the government to act before the looming deadline, or risk widespread disruption in the country’s already strained healthcare services.

Announcing the milestone at a press briefing in Maiduguri, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, said the hospital had resumed its transplant programme with renewed vigor and improved capacity.

“This marks our second successful kidney transplant,” Prof. Ahidjo stated. “The first was carried out in August 2010. Now, we are back with greater resolve and enhanced infrastructure.”

According to the CMD, the hospital currently has 20 patients on the waiting list for kidney transplants. He appealed to well-meaning individuals and organizations to support underprivileged patients who are unable to afford the procedure.

Highlighting UMTH’s commitment to affordability and access, Prof. Ahidjo noted that dialysis at the facility costs only ₦12,000 equivalent to less than $8 compared to the global average of $1,000. “Our goal is to make this one of the most affordable transplant centres in West Africa,” he added.

UMTH, a federally funded institution, offers a range of subsidized services. The hospital boasts four state-of-the-art theatres dedicated to kidney transplants and a ward that can accommodate up to 85 patients making it one of the largest renal care centres in the country.

The CMD expressed gratitude to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) for its support in equipping the hospital with modern surgical and diagnostic tools. He also acknowledged the Borno State Government, particularly Governor Babagana Zulum, for a ₦50 million donation towards research into kidney disease in the North-East.

Preliminary findings from the hospital’s research efforts have linked rising cases of kidney failure in the region to chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and prolonged dehydration especially in rural communities.

As UMTH re-establishes itself as a leading centre for organ transplant in Nigeria, its recent success signals hope for thousands of patients battling end-stage renal disease in the region and beyond.

The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi (APC, Delta), who raised alarms over the worsening condition of public health services in the nation’s capital.

Ezechi pointed out that the FCT’s rapid population growth over the past two decades has far outpaced the capacity of its existing medical facilities, many of which were built years ago without adequate expansion. He said government hospitals are now operating under intense pressure, with overcrowded wards, a chronic shortage of bed spaces, and insufficient medical personnel.

“The situation has reached a crisis point,” Ezechi said. “Patients are being turned away or left waiting for hours due to lack of space and staff. This is leading to needless loss of lives that could otherwise be prevented.”

In response, the House called on the Federal Ministry of Health and the FCT Administration to urgently conduct a joint audit of all healthcare centers in the territory. The aim is to identify areas requiring immediate upgrades, resource allocation, and expansion.

The lawmakers also advocated for the immediate release of emergency funds to facilitate the renovation of hospitals, recruitment of medical staff, and procurement of vital equipment. They emphasized the importance of engaging private sector stakeholders and international health organizations to enhance service delivery capacity while long-term reforms are being implemented.

The House further urged the Federal Government to design a sustainable healthcare infrastructure blueprint that reflects the demographic realities of the FCT and ensures equitable access to quality medical services for all residents.

Ezechi warned that without swift action, the FCT’s healthcare system could face total collapse, with dire consequences for public health and national security.

“A strategic overhaul, including modern infrastructure upgrades and a major hiring initiative for health professionals, is essential if we are to meet the needs of a growing urban population and uphold the right to health,” he concluded.
