A joint inter-agency team comprising officials from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society has concluded an on-the-ground assessment of communities severely affected by recent flooding in parts of Sokoto State.

The rapid assessment followed distress reports from Gada Local Government Area, where torrential rains caused widespread damage to homes, farmlands, and critical public infrastructure in several communities, including Gada, Tsitse, and Gilbade.

According to local ward representatives—Kabiru Usman (Gada), Sahabi Abdullahi (Tsitse), and Ahmed Tambari (Gilbade), the joint mission aims to guide both state and federal authorities in coordinating timely relief interventions and long-term recovery strategies.

Led by Sokoto SEMA officials, the team documented extensive losses, including the displacement of thousands and the submergence of agricultural lands at the peak of the harvest season. Preliminary data indicate that at least 2,814 residents were directly impacted by the floods, with hundreds of hectares of farmland rendered unusable.

Tragically, the flooding claimed the lives of two children and one elderly person, while 11 others sustained injuries. The destruction extended to key infrastructure, including a community mosque in Dantudu Bobawa and several public schools among them Damarki Primary School, Tunga Primary School, and Musuki Primary School which suffered structural damage.

Emergency agencies say the findings will form the basis for a coordinated response effort, including the distribution of relief materials and the design of climate-resilient infrastructure in flood-prone areas.

The Sokoto State Government is expected to announce its next steps in the coming days, as humanitarian organizations and development partners prepare to scale up support for affected communities.

The Federal Government has announced a ₦6.3 billion intervention package in the form of interest- and collateral-free loans to 21,000 Nigerians affected by recent floods, in a move aimed at supporting recovery efforts and bolstering food security.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at a roundtable marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, said the initiative will provide ₦300,000 each to beneficiaries over the coming weeks.

“This intervention is designed to support farmers and strengthen flood-affected communities,” the minister said, noting that the scheme aligns with the administration’s broader poverty reduction strategy.

Sununu added that the National Social Investment Program has already disbursed over ₦300 billion in Conditional Cash Transfers to more than 8.1 million households, contributing to improved health, education, and resilience among vulnerable groups. The program will continue under the President’s “Hope Agenda,” he said.

The minister also revealed a new collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to support internally displaced persons (IDPs) through an off-take scheme. Under the model, the government will purchase 70% of produce cultivated by IDPs, while participants retain the remaining 30%, ensuring a guaranteed market and immediate cash support.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, underscored the rising risks posed by climate change, conflict, pandemics, and technology-driven disasters. She called for a paradigm shift from reactive to preventive disaster management.

Umar unveiled two new policy frameworks: the NEMA Strategic Plan (2025–2029) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy (2025–2030), which aim to improve preparedness, resilience, and data-driven decision-making. NEMA is also developing a National Risk Monitoring and Information Platform to enhance early warning capabilities.

She further advocated for sustainable financing models, including catastrophe bonds, climate funds, and blended finance to support long-term disaster prevention and recovery efforts.

The high-level event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, lawmakers, development partners, and international agencies.

According to figures from NEMA’s 2025 Flood Dashboard, as of October 10, floods have claimed 238 lives, displaced over 135,000 people, and affected more than 409,000 residents across multiple states. At least 826 people have sustained injuries, while 115 remain missing.

In addition, over 500 widows, 10 orphanages, and numerous children gathered at the church headquarters to receive food and essential supplies as part of the day’s programme.

David Abu Ozigi, head of Dunamis’ Welfare Department, highlighted the community-focused intent behind the event. “This is an expression of love rooted in service. It reflects the values that guide the church and its leadership,” he said.

He explained that the water project was informed by a needs assessment that revealed gaps in Sabon Iddo’s access to potable water. “Providing safe water not only improves health but strengthens dignity and community resilience,” Ozigi added.

As the programme concluded, community members were urged to sustain unity and mutual support. “Acts of kindness have lasting effects when matched with a commitment to peace and faith,” Dr. Enenche noted.

The event ended with prayers and a renewed call for continued compassion across communities.

The $27 million for Nigeria is included in the $536 million in humanitarian aid announced by U.S. Under Secretary of State, Uzra Zeya, following her recent visit to Ethiopia. This funding is aimed at alleviating the suffering of displaced individuals and the most vulnerable populations, while also addressing challenges faced by host communities.

Zeya emphasized the importance of this aid, stating, “Through coordination with host countries’ governments and international partners, this assistance is intended to create durable solutions, build resilience, and resolve the plight of displaced and other vulnerable persons.”

This announcement was made during the Senior Officials Meeting on the Sahel and Lake Chad, attended by EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, on Tuesday.

In a statement provided to journalists by the Head of Communication for the EU to Nigeria, Modestus Chukwulaka, the funding will be allocated to essential services such as food security, malnutrition treatment, healthcare, protection, water, and sanitation.

The aid distribution is as follows: Burkina Faso will receive €26.9 million, Cameroon €21 million, Chad €57.9 million, Mali €24 million, Mauritania €5.7 million, Niger €24.6 million, and Nigeria €31.5 million.

Chad’s allocation includes an additional €8.7 million to address the consequences of the conflict in Sudan on neighboring countries and €3.1 million to support an EU Humanitarian Air Bridge operation in the East. This is in addition to the initial €45.3 million announced by Commissioner Lenarčič during his visit to the country at the end of January 2024.

Mauritania’s allocation includes a reinforcement of €3 million allocated in January 2024 in response to the increasing number of Malian refugees in the country.

Lenarčič highlighted the severe impact of insecurity and violence in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions, noting that over 35 million people require aid. He emphasized the need for the international community to intensify efforts to bridge the growing gap between needs and available resources.

“Insecurity, violence, and over a decade of armed conflict are driving communities in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions to new depths of suffering.

Today, over 35 million people across these regions need aid, while the humanitarian crisis is now spilling over into West Africa’s coastal countries. At the same time, we are facing an increasingly shrinking response capacity and humanitarian access.

It is therefore crucial that the international community scales up its efforts to bridge the growing gap between human need and available resources. The EU is doing its part by increasing its pledge for 2024 to over 200 million euros across the two regions. I urge the rest of the international community to play its part,” stated Lenarčič.
