Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to occupants of shanties, makeshift structures and illegal trading points along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, warning that a massive demolition exercise will commence next week.

The governor announced the directive on Saturday after leading the monthly environmental sanitation exercise alongside his wife, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, across communities in Surulere Local Government Area.

Speaking with journalists after the exercise, Sanwo-Olu said the state government would deploy enforcement teams to clear all illegal structures along the corridor, stretching from Orile-Iganmu to Okokomaiko.

“This is the final notice to everyone occupying the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. From next week, we are coming to clear the entire median. Everything there will go. Every illegal structure will be removed,” the governor said.

He stressed that the highway median was not designated for markets or residential structures, noting that the government would protect the corridor considering the huge public investment committed to the road project.

“It is a 10-lane highway built with taxpayers’ money. We will not allow anyone to turn an international gateway into a slum. We are deploying thousands of personnel to ensure compliance,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve waste management across the state, disclosing that the government would soon add 150 compactors to its waste collection fleet while deploying waste tricycles to underserved communities.

According to him, the state is investing in long-term waste management infrastructure, including a modern material recovery and recycling facility expected to process about 4,250 metric tonnes of waste daily.

The governor urged residents to support government initiatives by disposing of waste responsibly and paying waste collection bills promptly.

“Waste management is not the responsibility of government alone. Residents must also play their part by paying for waste collection services to enable operators provide efficient services,” he said.

He further encouraged parents to involve their children in environmental sanitation activities, describing cleanliness as essential to building a healthier and more sustainable Lagos.

Meanwhile, during an inspection of the Olusosun Landfill, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the state was transitioning from the traditional “collect-and-dump” waste disposal model to a circular system that converts waste into valuable resources.

Wahab explained that the planned material recovery facility in Ikorodu would receive waste from transfer loading stations and process thousands of tonnes daily into reusable products and energy.

“We can no longer sustain the waste management system we have practised for decades. Waste must become a resource for wealth creation, energy generation and environmental sustainability,” he said.

The Kano State Government has inaugurated an 11-member special taskforce committee to address the growing incidence of illegal structures and building code violations across the state.

The committee is mandated to identify, review, and take enforcement action against buildings erected without official approval or those that violate existing physical planning regulations, particularly within the Kano metropolis.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was deeply concerned about the increasing number of unapproved developments across the state.

He noted that the administration had made significant investments in urban renewal projects aimed at improving infrastructure, environmental management, and the overall aesthetics of Kano.

“The administration has made significant investments in road construction, drainage systems and environmental beautification. These efforts are meant to transform Kano into a more organised and liveable city,” he said.

Umar Farouk Ibrahim warned that the spread of illegal structures poses a major challenge to urban planning efforts and could undermine ongoing development initiatives if not urgently addressed.

He urged members of the committee to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, fairness, and professionalism, stressing that their selection was based on competence and credibility.

“You were selected based on competence and credibility. We expect you to discharge this responsibility with sincerity and in the best interest of the state,” he said.

The SSG reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the Kano master plan and ensuring sustainable urban development for future generations.

The committee is chaired by the Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (Kano GIS), Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani.

Other members are drawn from relevant professional and government sectors, with Mustapha Ibrahim Fagge serving as Secretary and Yusuf Yakubu Ismail as Co-Secretary.

According to its terms of reference, the committee will identify illegal structures in key areas of the metropolis, including Nassarawa, Fagge, Tarauni, and Kumbotso Local Government Areas.

It is also expected to review building approvals issued within the last two years and halt ongoing construction projects that violate planning regulations.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani expressed appreciation to the state government for the confidence reposed in them and assured that the taskforce would carry out its assignment diligently.

“We assure the government that we will carry out this assignment with seriousness and professionalism,” he said.

The Delta State Government has announced plans to demolish all illegal structures erected within the Asaba Waterfront City Project, warning that encroachment on the government-owned land will no longer be tolerated.

The warning was issued during an on-site inspection of the project area by the Director of Special Projects, Asaba Waterfront City, Hon. Victor Ebonka, who led a joint team of officials from the Ministry of Lands and Surveys and other relevant agencies.

Ebonka said the inspection exercise was necessary to address the growing incidence of illegal development within the project corridor, describing the situation as a major threat to the integrity of the state’s flagship urban renewal initiative.

According to him, the entire expanse of land designated for the Asaba Waterfront City project was lawfully acquired, fully gazetted, and all legitimate landowners were duly compensated by the state government before project commencement.

“This land belongs entirely to the Delta State Government. It is fully gazetted, and compensation has been paid. Any structure found here is illegal and will be removed,” Ebonka stated.

No statutory notices for illegal occupants

Ebonka stressed that occupants of illegal structures are not entitled to statutory notices, noting that the government is acting within its legal rights.

“That is why we are here today to mark illegal fences and structures for demolition. Since this is government land, there is no obligation to issue statutory notices,” he said.

He warned that bulldozers would soon move in to clear all illegal developments, adding that those responsible would bear the full cost of demolition.

“Government will not hesitate to act. All illegal structures will be demolished, and the cost will be borne by those who erected them,” he warned.

Victims of land fraud advised to seek refunds

The project director expressed concern that some individuals had been deceived by land speculators and fraudsters, who took advantage of the ongoing development to sell government land illegally to unsuspecting buyers.

He urged prospective land buyers to always verify land ownership and status with the Ministry of Lands and Surveys, Town Planning authorities, and other relevant agencies before making payments—especially in high-profile development zones such as the Asaba Waterfront City.

“Anyone who bought land here should immediately go back to whoever sold it to them and demand a refund. Government did not sell any land in this area,” Ebonka said.

He further advised affected persons to remove any structures or encumbrances they may have placed on the land in order to salvage movable materials before demolition begins.

Project enters second phase

Ebonka disclosed that the current activities at the site include excavation works, which are preparatory steps for full-scale land reclamation.

He explained that the project has now entered its second phase, following the successful completion of earlier milestones.

“The first phase involved construction of access roads, payment of compensation, and securing all statutory approvals. What you are seeing now is preparation for extensive reclamation works,” he said.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has sealed an ongoing construction project and issued a 72-hour ultimatum to another property within the Lekki–Ikoyi corridor over unauthorised development.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), LASBCA said its enforcement team on Thursday sealed a building under construction on Femi Okunnu Road, Alexander Avenue, after the developers failed to obtain the necessary building permits.

The agency emphasised that strict adherence to building regulations is vital to curb the spread of illegal developments and to maintain safety and order in Lagos’ fast-growing urban landscape.

In a related action, LASBCA issued a 72-hour notice to QMB Mart, directing the removal of all illegal structures erected on Coastal Road and beneath the powerline.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Abiodun, the affected space had been designated strictly as a parking area. However, occupants allegedly converted it into a commercial hub, setting up a laundromat, clubhouse, and eatery without official approval.

“Development in Lagos must follow due process,” Abiodun said. “Any structure erected without approval or any change of use of government-allocated spaces without authorisation is illegal. The state remains committed to enforcing its master plan.”

LASBCA’s General Manager, Gbaye Florence, reaffirmed the agency’s determination to intensify monitoring across all development zones.

“Our mandate is to ensure that buildings in Lagos are safe and meet global standards,” she said. “Any developer who flouts building regulations will face enforcement measures.”

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished more than 1,000 makeshift shanties and unauthorized structures blocking a major road corridor in Karsana, close to the Bunkoro District in Gwarinpa.

Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, confirmed the operation on Monday during a citywide sanitation exercise carried out by the FCTA joint task force.

He explained that the clean-up targeted illegal squatters and people of questionable character, stressing that indigenous homes were deliberately spared. The demolition, he said, would continue until the entire two-kilometre stretch of road was cleared.

“Today’s exercise is along the proposed Ring Road 3 corridor at the intersection of N16 and RR3, near Mab Global Estate. The shanties and illegal settlements here pose both security and environmental threats, so the operation is continuing as planned,” Galadima said.

Most of the destroyed structures, he noted, were temporary shelters built with wood and other weak materials. He added that the exercise had already cleared over 1,000 shanties, with more still under removal.

Speaking on the security implications, Adamu Gwary, FCTA Director of Security Services Development, represented by Dr. Peter Olumuji, said the operation had brought relief to nearby estates such as Mab Global.

“There is a clear link between development control and community safety. Many criminal elements hide within these illegal structures, using indigenous settlements as cover,” he said.

Gwary added that no arrests were made during the operation, but the exercise would continue to address security concerns. He also confirmed an ongoing crackdown on vehicles with tinted windows, explaining that many permits were forged and tied to robbery cases.

Despite an Inspector-General of Police directive delaying enforcement until October 2025, Gwary defended the early crackdown, pointing to a rise in “one-chance” robberies involving illegally tinted vehicles in Abuja.

The Surveyor-General of the Federation, Abudulganiyu Adebomehin, has announced a crackdown on illegal shoreline structures in Nigeria. All such buildings will be demolished.

In a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Henry David, Adebomehin explained that the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) now operates under the Presidency. He said this move gives the office more powers and responsibilities in managing Nigeria’s shoreline areas.

The Surveyor-General directed that all applications for Certificates of Occupancy, permits, and survey plans along shorelines be suspended. “These requests will remain on hold until they are reviewed and approved by OSGOF,” he said.

He also ordered the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to submit all past shoreline-related approvals to his office. In addition, he warned that any documents already submitted to other agencies must now be redirected to OSGOF.

Adebomehin criticized some state governments for allocating shoreline land without OSGOF’s involvement. He stressed that such actions go against the law. “The enforcement unit will demolish any illegal structure within the shoreline right of way. This is an executive order. It complies with the Law of the Sea,” he stated. He also emphasized that OSGOF holds the official maps required for shoreline management.

The Surveyor-General praised the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) and the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) for supporting the profession. He assured them of continuous collaboration.

During the visit, NIS Surveyor-General Folakemi Odunewu congratulated Adebomehin on OSGOF’s transition to the Presidency. She presented the institution’s seven-point agenda, which includes digital transformation of the National Secretariat, stronger public relations and advocacy, broader engagement with stakeholders, review of the Survey Coordination Act, development of professional excellence structures, and advocacy for a dedicated Ministry of Surveying and Geoinformatics.

The Imo State Government has launched a statewide campaign to reclaim public land from unauthorized occupiers, beginning the demolition of illegally erected structures on government-reserved spaces.

Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, disclosed that investigations unearthed a troubling trend: individuals occupying public verges with forged or outdated allocation documents, particularly in areas like Aladinma Garden Estate.

According to Nwaneri, several of these occupants claim rights to land using documents that have no legal foundation. He clarified that the concerned lands including verges and buffer zones are strictly reserved for public infrastructure like drainage and road expansion,and are not to be converted for personal or commercial purposes by any agency, including the Imo State Housing Corporation.

He further emphasized that these illegal encroachments obstruct natural water channels, increase the risk of flooding, and undermine the lifespan of newly rehabilitated roads.

“The government will no longer tolerate these distortions of urban planning,” Nwaneri said. “Any structure built on public verges will be removed without warning.”

He cautioned the public against dealing with unauthorized agents claiming to sell or allocate government land, urging residents to report any suspicious activity around reserved areas to the appropriate authorities.

All occupants have been instructed to vacate immediately or face eviction and possible legal consequences.

“Government reserves are not business spaces,” he reiterated. “They are vital to the city’s drainage, safety, and development. Anyone obstructing these spaces is obstructing progress.”

The government pledged to uphold urban order and protect public infrastructure from abuse, warning that it will not hesitate to act swiftly and decisively in defense of the state’s long-term interests.
