The Federal Government has issued a warning of potential flooding in several locations across 10 states, following predictions of heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026.

The alert, issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Ministry of Environment, identified Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia states as likely to experience significant rainfall that may trigger flooding. Communities listed include Onitsha, Atani, Afikpo, Ayetoro, Ikom, Owerri, Port Harcourt, and Umuahia.

The ministry advised residents and local authorities to take precautionary measures to reduce risks to lives and property. Usman Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, emphasized the importance of early preparedness to mitigate flood impacts.

The ministry’s forecast aligns with earlier warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which cautioned farmers against early planting after unpredictable rains in February and March 2026. Lagos State had also issued alerts for heavy rainfall and flash flooding as the rainy season approached.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow official updates to ensure safety.

Nigeria’s cost of living eased in September 2025 as headline inflation fell to 18.02%, with several states recording lower rates, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The ranking is based on headline inflation, showing where prices of essential goods and services rose the least.

10. Jigawa – 16.3%

Inflation dropped from 23.1% to 16.3%, driven by government agricultural programmes like the Rice Millionaire Project and Special Agro-Processing Zones.

9. Akwa Ibom – 16.3%

Down from 20.7% in August, with food inflation at 9%. A new ₦695 billion budget and food security committee helped stabilise prices.

8. Imo – 15.8%

Improved security and stable housing costs reduced inflation from 18.3% to 15.8%, with food inflation at 12.4%.

7. Ebonyi – 14.8%

Inflation eased from 21.2% to 14.8%. Despite strong farm output, transport and distribution costs remain high.

6. Bayelsa – 14.8%

Inflation dropped from 23.8% but food inflation rose to 21.9% due to high import dependence.

5. Sokoto – 14%

Inflation fell sharply from 22.5%. Salary support to civil servants helped ease short-term pressures.

4. Enugu – 12.4%

Transport and rent relief cut inflation from 14.2%. Fertilizer distribution supported food supply.

3. Bauchi – 12.4%

Inflation declined from 15.3%, food inflation to 2.8%, supported by better roads, fertilizer subsidies, and grain reserves.

2. Niger – 11.8%

Inflation halved from 25.5%. Flood relief, road repairs, and food aid helped stabilise prices.

1. Anambra – 9.3%

Now Nigeria’s most affordable state, down from 14.2%. Market digitalisation and rural water projects reduced costs.

Overall, agricultural expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and relief programmes are helping many states achieve lower living costs despite national inflation pressures.

The State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba, disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri.

He mentioned that Imo was among only four states in Nigeria that qualified for the reimbursement under the World Bank’s State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) programme for the country.

According to the Commissioner, the states were assessed under efficiency of land administration, regulatory framework for private investment in fiber optic infrastructure, services provided by investment promotion agencies and the efficiency and transparency of government-to-business services in Participating states, adding that; “the state excelled in the four criteria, thus qualifying it to be rewarded with the huge sum for the consolidation of its programmes.”

Among other reasons he said the state got the world Bank reward was because it “Prioritised efficiency and transparency in government to business services, the state has engendered a culture of accountability in its relationships with relevant stakeholders.”

When he was further asked of the benefits of such funds, he said: “This is like a pass mark from world Bank that in terms of Easy of doing business our state is among the best. It is a reward for hard work. The fund means that if you do well they reward you for doing well in these areas especially in the area of infrastructure development. The Imo people will be satisfied that extra cash will be provided for more development especially in rural roads.”

He summarized the award “as a testament to the government’s commitment to progressive governance, economic empowerment and sustainable development. Under the focused administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, Imo State implemented firm policy initiatives to improve land administration, enabling seamless land registration and boosting land-based investments through transparent governance Uzodimma has boosted the confidence of investors in the state, especially in the area of digital connectivity.”

However, he said: “Contrary to the submissions of critics of government, Uzodimma had been working very hard interacting with investors within and outside Nigeria to buy into the investment opportunities available in the state. Imo state has made giant strides in strengthening its investment promotion agencies to ensure that they attracted the best investors to the state.”

He concluded by saying: “The government’s achievements in the SABER programme of the World Bank are a confirmation of Uzodimma’s leadership initiatives aimed at making Imo the investment hub in Nigeria.”

Scores of Umuejechi Nekede women have on a peaceful protested over what they called “the forceful takeover of their ancestral land by the Imo State Government”.

The aggrieved women claimed that the Government took the land “despite subsisting court judgments in their favour”.

Adored in all black attire, the women, chanting lamentable songs, displayed placards with varying inscriptions.

Some of the placards read: “Governor Uzodimma, we also have property rights; we can’t be slaves in our home. Governor Uzodimma, please leave our land for us. This is the only land left for us and our children”.

Speaking to newsmen at the scene of the protest, the Assistant Woman Leader, Ndom Umuejechi, Dr. Mrs. Regina Emereonye, cautioned that anarchy would sadly take over, if and wherever the rule of law is jettisoned.

Her words: “We are a very peaceful community, but our peaceful stance to life and living should not be taken for granted by anybody.

“Anarchy, which blows no one any good, ultimately creeps in, anytime and wherever the rule of law is forced to take a flight in any place.

“The land in dispute is our ancestral land. It was leased to the defunct Eastern Region Government before the civil war, for agricultural purposes.

“Since the State Zoological Garden and Wildlife Park, which used to be money spinning tourist centre is moribund, the land ought to revert to the original land owners, in full compliance with the subsisting court judgments.”

Meanwhile, the community has, through their counsel, Mr. U. B. O. Obinna, sent a letter to Governor Hope Uzodimma, on the continuous trespass into the lands harbouring the defunct Agriculture Development Corporation.

Pioneer civil society in the Nigerian housing industry, Housing Development Advocacy Network HDAN has called on all electorates in Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states respectively, who would be voting in the forth-coming governorship elections set to be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, to vote candidates who place housing as priority in their manifesto.

According to HDAN, this choice of candidates would be beneficial to the housing needs of the people.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Friday by Executive Director Festus Adebayo in Abuja.

Adebayo also tasked politicians to do more on housing and make it part of their constituency’s projects.

“There’s no better time for electorates to demand for housing, than when politicians are seeking for their votes.

“There’s no better time to demand for their rights than when these politicians are campaigning to seek for their votes.”

He further stated that housing is key to economic development and that with housing, more employment opportunities can be created for the youths.

While calling on the legislative, and the Nigerian government to do more on housing, Adebayo noted that the importance of housing cannot be overemphasized in boosting the development of the nation.
