The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said Nigeria’s 2027 general election could face postponement if the ongoing Ebola outbreak spreads widely across the country.

NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the outbreak and its possible implications for the country.

Idris stressed that there is currently no need to postpone the election, adding that any decision would depend on how the public health situation develops.

“We hope the election will not be postponed but if the thing gets wide enough that might be considered, as at now there is no need for that,” he said.

He also warned against using public health emergencies for political purposes, insisting that disease outbreaks should not become tools for political activities.

According to the NCDC chief, health officials had been monitoring the Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) before the virus was detected in Nigeria.

He explained that international travel, population movement and flights into the country were among the factors that could contribute to the spread of infectious diseases across borders.

The comments come as Nigeria strengthens its response to the Ebola outbreak, with health authorities working to monitor exposed individuals, improve surveillance and prevent further transmission.

In an update issued on October 25, 2026, the NCDC confirmed one case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Federal Capital Territory. The agency said the patient was receiving medical care under isolation while public health teams continued contact tracing and other response measures.

The NCDC has also urged Nigerians to follow official health guidance, practise good hygiene and avoid spreading unverified information about the outbreak.

Idris maintained that postponing the 2027 election is not currently necessary. Any consideration of such a move would depend on the scale of the outbreak and the public health risks it presents.

For now, the electoral timetable has not been officially changed because of Ebola. The NCDC’s statement describes a possible scenario rather than an announcement that the election will be postponed.
