Speaking during a visit by members of the House of Representatives Committee on FERMA to the Government House in Dutse, the governor emphasized that inadequate funding has stalled the rehabilitation of key federal roads in the state.

He noted, “We are appealing for more financial support for FERMA. Effective road maintenance is central to national development, and current allocations are insufficient to meet the scale of work required.”

Namadi identified several deteriorating roads in Jigawa, including the Gumel–Megatari, Birnin Kudu–Gwaram, and Kafin Hausa–Kwanar Liman–Hadejia routes. According to him, these road conditions not only hinder economic activities but also pose safety risks to commuters.

Highlighting his administration’s achievements, he revealed that 25 out of 26 inherited road projects—spanning 330 kilometers—had been completed as of December last year. He added that 47 new projects covering 970 kilometers are underway to improve mobility and stimulate economic growth.

Chairman of the House Committee on FERMA, Hon. Aderemi Abbas Oseni, praised the state government for its road development efforts and commended Namadi’s leadership.

“From what we’ve seen, Jigawa is setting a good example in infrastructure delivery. The governor has demonstrated commendable commitment and resource management,” Oseni said.

He added that the committee’s visit aimed to assess the status of federal roads in the state and evaluate progress on awarded contracts in line with the 2024/2025 budget. He assured that Jigawa’s road concerns would be factored into the 2026 federal appropriation to help close funding gaps at FERMA.

The initiative was revealed on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Controller of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Dalhatu Abubakar, to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse.

Established in 2000, the Maigatari Free Trade Zone was designed to enhance industrialisation, attract foreign investment, and capitalise on its proximity to the Nigeria-Niger border. Despite its potential, the zone has remained largely inactive for over two decades.

Governor Namadi described the zone as a key economic asset for the state and expressed optimism that the current collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service would lead to a full revival of operations. “This government is fully committed to bringing Maigatari to full operation,” he said, affirming his administration’s resolve to unlock the zone’s economic value.

He noted that Jigawa State had already taken significant steps towards reviving the zone, including the payment of statutory licenses and rural resettlement efforts in the surrounding areas. The state is also in discussions with potential investors to support the development of the zone.

Commending the Nigerian Customs Service for its willingness to support the project, Namadi added, “Your visit is a testament to the importance of partnership. We are ready to work closely with the NCS to ensure the success of Maigatari.”

Responding, Controller Dalhatu Abubakar assured the governor of Customs’ readiness to operationalise the zone. “If you want operations today, we can start today,” he said, while acknowledging some existing administrative and technical issues that need to be addressed.

Highlighting Maigatari’s strategic location, Abubakar said, “Unlike Kano, Maigatari borders a neighbouring country. That gives you a comparative advantage in international trade.”

He noted that with the right infrastructure and policy support, the zone could transform Jigawa into a major player in the northern trade corridor. “We have a lot in common and we are ready to brainstorm to meet your administration’s objectives,” he said.

The renewed partnership signals a broader push by the Jigawa State Government to revitalise legacy projects and leverage regional trade to spur economic growth.

The Jigawa State Government has approved ₦19.6 billion for a major housing project. The plan includes building 560 homes across nine local government areas.

Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Sagir Musa, announced the decision after the recent Executive Council meeting in Dutse.

Phase Two of the State’s Housing Scheme

This project is part of the second phase of Jigawa’s Mass Housing Estate initiative. It will include:

• Three-bedroom detached houses

• Two-bedroom semi-detached houses

• All homes will have perimeter fencing for security

The houses will be built in:
Babura, Birnin Kudu, Dutse, Gumel, Hadejia, Kafin Hausa, Kazaure, Maigatari, and Ringim.

According to the commissioner, this housing effort is designed to:

Nigeria is currently facing a housing deficit of over 28 million units. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Musa Dangiwa, revealed that:

What the Federal Government Is Doing

To respond to the crisis, the federal government launched the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates program in 2024. The goal is to deliver 100,000 new homes across the country. Ownership plans include:

• Single-digit, 30-year mortgage loans from the Federal Mortgage Bank

In April 2025, the federal government announced another plan to build 77,400 homes. About 80% of these are reserved for low-income families. They will be able to pay gradually, using one-third of their monthly income.

Despite progress, the government still faces funding issues. Minister Dangiwa urged the Senate to allocate at least ₦500 billion annually to housing.

To meet the goal of 550,000 homes per year over the next 10 years, ₦5.5 trillion will be needed every year — making the ₦500 billion request just a fraction of the real need.

The governor announced during the swearing-in ceremony for the new local council officials in Dutse on Monday.

“Let me make it clear that land issues are the sole responsibility of the government. Unless the governor authorizes you, stay away from land allocation and distribution, or you will go to jail,” Namadi warned.

He emphasized that land management in Jigawa State is a susceptible matter, and no local government official is permitted to act outside their authority on this issue.

Governor Sets Strict Guidelines for Local Government Officials

In addition to his stance on land management, Governor Namadi urged the newly inaugurated chairpersons and their deputies to remain in their respective local government areas (LGAs) to serve their communities effectively. He highlighted that his administration would no longer tolerate officials residing outside their jurisdictions, particularly in the state capital, Dutse, or nearby cities like Kano.

Namadi also called for inclusive governance, urging the officials to engage all segments of their communities in decision-making processes. He expressed his hopes for a successful tenure and urged the officials to remain diligent in their duties.

APC Dominates Recent Local Government Elections

The local government elections held on October 5 saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) secure all 27 chairmanship positions and 282 councillorship seats across the state. The Accord Party (AP) claimed four councillorship seats, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won one.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairpersons, Muhammad Uba, chairman of Birninkudu Local Government Council, expressed gratitude to Governor Namadi for his support and pledged to work in line with the administration’s directives.
