Four outstanding young Qur’anic reciters have received newly built homes as prizes for their exceptional performance in the President Bola Tinubu Mother’s Qur’anic Recitation Competition, held recently in Kano.

The initiative, spearheaded by Senator Bashir Lado—Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters—was designed to honour the late Hajiya Abibatu Mogaji Tinubu, mother of President Bola Tinubu, while promoting Qur’anic memorization and recitation among Nigerian youth.

Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony, Deputy Chairman of the Organising Committee, Professor Ali Muhammad, highlighted the dual purpose of the event: to commemorate the legacy of Hajiya Abibatu and to nurture moral and spiritual values among young Muslims.

AIHS 2025

Winners of the first positions, Maryam Abubakar Mu’az (female category) and Ahmad Shu’aib (male category), were each awarded luxurious three-bedroom homes. Second-place winners Zainab Hassan Shu’aib and Ahmad Kabir Baturi received two-bedroom houses. All properties included parlours and were presented as fully finished living spaces.

Over 100 contestants from all 44 local government areas of Kano State participated in the competition, which was marked by rigorous recitation of the entire Qur’an. Organisers described the turnout and performance as evidence of the deep commitment among youth to Islamic scholarship.

“This is more than a competition—it’s a call to character, knowledge, and faith,” Prof. Muhammad said. “Our aim is to inspire more young Nigerians to embrace the teachings of the Qur’an as a guide for responsible citizenship and nation-building.”

The event attracted high-profile guests, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Emir of Daura, and other dignitaries from across Nigeria, underscoring its national significance.

Organisers expressed hope that the initiative would become an annual tradition, with broader support to reach more talented youth across the country.

A Kano State High Court has ordered the state government to pay N2.6 billion in compensation to Tiamin Multi-Services Global Limited following the unlawful demolition of a commercial property in Gyadi Gyadi, Tarauni Local Government Area.

The property, owned by businessman Aminu Ahmad, was demolished in 2019 during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The court ruled that the demolition was carried out without proper notice and that the revocation of the Certificate of Occupancy was legally invalid.

Delivering judgment, the court awarded N2.125 billion in general damages to the claimant. It also imposed an additional N500 million as punitive damages for what it described as “unjustified and unlawful actions,” along with N10 million to cover legal expenses incurred by the plaintiff.

Reacting to the verdict, Mr. Ahmad expressed gratitude and welcomed the judgment, calling it a win for justice and due process.

“I see this decision as a victory not just for myself, but for anyone who believes in fairness and the rule of law,” he said, adding that the ruling reaffirmed his faith in the Nigerian judicial system.

To mark the occasion, Ahmad reportedly gathered with religious leaders to offer prayers of thanks following the court’s decision.

A storm of controversy has erupted in Kano State following the demolition of over 500 shops at Rano Market. The move has left many traders in distress and sparked widespread outrage.

In response, the Kano State House of Assembly has launched an official investigation into the incident. On Monday, lawmakers took decisive action by forming a seven-member committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the demolition. The situation has caused significant economic hardship for those affected.

The motion to investigate the matter was raised by Ibrahim Muhammad, the representative of Rano Constituency. He condemned the demolition as deeply unfortunate and urged his fellow lawmakers to intervene. Muhammad questioned the rationale behind the action and called for an urgent review of the situation.

He also expressed concerns about the legality of the demolition. The shop owners, he pointed out, were not given adequate notice or any form of compensation. The sudden loss of their businesses, he argued, had left many traders without a means of survival in an already challenging economic climate.

Responding to these concerns, Speaker of the House Alhaji Ismail Falgore directed the formation of a special committee to investigate the issue.

The committee is chaired by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu-Butu and has been given a one-week deadline to submit its findings. Their task is to determine why the demolition was carried out, whether due process was followed, and what measures should be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Lawmakers emphasized that the well-being of the affected traders must be a priority. Appropriate recommendations will be made based on the committee’s findings.

The demolition, which occurred last week, has triggered massive protests across Rano Local Government Area. Market traders and residents have voiced their anger over the destruction.

They are calling on the state government to intervene by providing compensation and relocating the affected business owners. Many believe the demolition was carried out in a way that disregarded the rights and livelihoods of the people. This has fueled frustration and distrust toward local authorities.

As the investigation unfolds, all eyes are on the state assembly to ensure justice is served. For many of the traders who lost their shops, the stakes could not be higher.

Their businesses represented not just sources of income but also the foundation of their families’ financial security. With tensions running high, the outcome of the probe will be critical. It will determine the next steps and help restore confidence in the government’s handling of public markets and business properties.
