At least 21 people have died and more than 30 remain missing following a landslide caused by heavy rains in western Kenya, the Interior Minister confirmed on Saturday.

The disaster occurred overnight in Marakwet East, a region currently experiencing the rainy season.

Search and rescue operations were suspended for the night due to unsafe conditions.

“We have confirmed the loss of 21 people to this tragedy, while over 30 people are still unaccounted for as reported by their families,” Kipchumba Murkomen wrote on X.

The Kenyan Red Cross shared aerial images showing extensive mudslides and flash flooding.

The organization is coordinating with the government to evacuate injured residents and provide emergency assistance. Access to some affected areas remains extremely difficult due to flooding and blocked roads.

Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities continue to assess the full impact of the disaster.
