The Federal Government has completed 40 major road and bridge projects across Nigeria between May 2023 and May 2026, while construction is ongoing on approximately 5,400 kilometres of highways, expressways, and strategic road corridors nationwide. The update was contained in the Federal Ministry of Works’ three-year projects report, which highlights the administration’s ongoing investment in transport infrastructure.

According to the report, about 1,800 kilometres of major road projects have been completed during the review period, while 133 additional projects are currently under construction. The projects span all six geopolitical zones and include highway reconstruction, road dualisation, bridge construction, bypasses, coastal highways, and emergency road interventions aimed at improving connectivity across the country.

The South-West recorded the highest number of completed projects with 12, followed by the South-East, North-East, and South-South with six each. The North-West and North-Central completed five projects each. Major infrastructure corridors receiving attention include the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, Kano-Maiduguri Road, Lokoja-Benin Road, Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Highway, and several other strategic routes linking commercial centres, ports, agricultural communities, and international borders.

The Ministry noted that the projects are designed to improve transportation efficiency, reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce and manufactured goods, and stimulate economic growth. In addition to major highway construction, the programme also includes emergency repairs to roads, bridges, and culverts damaged by flooding and erosion to maintain access for affected communities.

The report further stated that several leading construction firms, including CCECC, Hitech Construction, Julius Berger, CGC Nigeria, Setraco, RCC, Arab Contractors, China Harbour Engineering Company, Mothercat, and Dangote Industries, are executing projects across different regions under the Federal Government’s infrastructure programme.

Stakeholders believe that the success of the road programme will ultimately depend on timely funding, quality project execution, and effective maintenance after completion. They note that improved road infrastructure has the potential to strengthen regional integration, reduce logistics costs, improve road safety, and support Nigeria’s long-term economic development

President Bola Tinubu has approved 27 road projects valued at more than N3.9 trillion across 15 states as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve road infrastructure and enhance connectivity nationwide. The approvals were announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.

According to the minister, the projects are spread across Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Yobe states. The projects include new road constructions, dualisation works, rehabilitation of existing roads, and the construction of bridges and flyovers.

One of the largest approvals is the re-award of the 409-kilometre dual carriageway project in Niger State under the tax credit scheme at a cost of N1.8 trillion. Other major projects include the dualisation of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road, reconstruction of the Iseyin-Eruwa-Agbesi Road, rehabilitation of the Ilorin-Omorin-Ebe-Kabba-Obajana Road, and the construction of several strategic roads linking states and economic corridors.

The council also approved projects in Lagos, including the construction of the Pacific Road linking Igbe Laara to Ikorodu, as well as additional projects in Adamawa, Oyo, Kwara, Ebonyi, Plateau, and other states. Furthermore, the Federal Government approved the full business case for the operation and maintenance concession of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and directed the reconstruction of failed sections along the Ibadan axis using concrete pavement.

Umahi disclosed that the first 118-kilometre section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway, valued at N137 billion, has been completed, describing the road projects as part of the administration’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at boosting economic activities, improving transportation efficiency, and strengthening regional integration across the country.

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to constructing durable, long-lasting roads across the country, stating that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is focused on delivering infrastructure that will stand the test of time for up to 100 years.

Speaking to journalists during an inspection tour of major highway projects in the South-West on Wednesday, Umahi said the government is now prioritizing the use of concrete pavement technology over traditional asphalt in a bid to enhance road longevity and performance.

The minister visited two key projects: the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode–Benin Expressway and Section II of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which stretches from the Sagamu Interchange to Ojoo in Ibadan, Oyo State. He expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work on both sites, noting that the projects reflect a new era of infrastructure delivery in Nigeria.

“We are not just constructing roads, we are building infrastructure that will endure for over 100 years,” Umahi stated. “Show me an asphalt road in Nigeria that has lasted 50 years. Even the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, recently rehabilitated with asphalt, is already showing signs of failure in some sections. But the concrete road built in my state in the 1950s remains intact to this day.”

According to Umahi, the decision to adopt concrete pavement is based on its proven durability and cost-effectiveness over time. He stressed that while concrete may have higher upfront costs, it offers lower maintenance requirements and significantly longer lifespan compared to asphalt.

He also used the occasion to criticize the habit of indiscriminate refuse dumping on highways, calling it unpatriotic and a serious impediment to maintaining national infrastructure.

“Our highways are not dumping grounds,” he said. “This behavior undermines the government’s efforts to provide quality infrastructure and must be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians.”

Umahi reiterated that the Tinubu administration is redefining standards for federal road projects, with a focus on sustainability, quality, and value for money.

“We are completing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Makurdi 9th Mile in Enugu State, and several other roads. These roads will be tolled, but not just for the sake of revenue.

We are introducing measures to ensure safety, like 24-hour security patrols and solar lighting on these routes. People will be willing to pay tolls if they are confident the roads are safe and well-maintained,” Umahi explained.

The tolling process will start with the Keffi-Makurdi road, which has been completed, while other highways, including the Abuja-Kano route, are in the pipeline for renovation and subsequent tolling.

The government also plans to make toll payments paperless, collaborating with the Ministry of Finance to implement digital payment systems for ease of use.

This development is part of a broader agenda to enhance Nigeria’s road networks and provide long-term maintenance solutions through toll collection, with additional road construction projects set to begin by October 1, 2024.

The minister reiterated the administration’s focus on turning road infrastructure into viable investments and ensuring that these projects are sustainable, securing long-term benefits for road users across the country.
