The Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged murder of 56-year-old Kelechi Madu in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The development followed investigations into Madu’s death, barely two days after his wife reported him missing.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the prime suspect, identified as 32-year-old Ifeanyi Nwankwo, was a friend of the deceased and allegedly confessed to planning the killing and engaging two other people to carry it out.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Nwankwo allegedly obtained money from Madu fraudulently after claiming he could assist him in acquiring a piece of land.

Investigators alleged that the suspect subsequently arranged the killing in an attempt to conceal the transaction and prevent the recovery of the money.

Madu Reported Missing

According to the police, Madu’s wife reported him missing on August 18, 2026, after he left their home on the evening of August 17 and did not return.

Police operatives, working alongside members of the local vigilante group and the deceased’s family, subsequently began searching for him and investigating his whereabouts.

Later that evening, the wife returned to the police station and reported that her husband had been found dead in a nearby bush at Umuobi, Awkuzu.

Police operatives were immediately deployed to the location, where the deceased was found dead.

His remains were subsequently taken to a hospital for preservation.

Friend Allegedly Confesses

During the investigation, police arrested Nwankwo, who allegedly confessed to involvement in planning the killing.

According to the police, Nwankwo had allegedly received money from Madu under the pretext of helping him acquire a parcel of land.

Investigators said the alleged fraud became the motive behind the subsequent plot to kill the deceased and conceal the transaction.

The police said two other people were allegedly engaged to carry out the killing.

The command said investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify everyone involved.

Police Intensify Investigation

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the investigation be intensified to identify and arrest all persons allegedly connected to the conspiracy and murder.

The command said it remains committed to ensuring that everyone connected to the crime is brought to justice.

The police also said they would continue to strengthen intelligence-led policing and cooperation with communities to prevent violent crime and uncover criminal activities in the state.

Residents of Ikangba Community in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State have asked Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene in a land dispute that they say threatens peace in the area.

The community made the appeal in Abeokuta. It accused some individuals of trying to take control of its ancestral land through intimidation. It also alleged that some security personnel had become involved in the dispute.

Prince Oluleye Olufemi Oluleye, Secretary of the Ikangba community, presented the community’s statement. He urged the governor to act quickly before the dispute leads to more violence.

Community Seeks Government Intervention

The community said security agencies had already taken steps to address the dispute.

According to the residents, two Ikangba indigenes were earlier arrested and detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) office in Abeokuta. The two men were later released after the community presented documents supporting its claim to the land.

The residents said DSS officials heard from both sides and reviewed the circumstances of the dispute. They said the agency then warned all parties against actions that could disrupt peace in the community.

Despite these interventions, the community said tensions had continued.

The residents alleged cases of harassment, maiming and sporadic shootings around the disputed land. They said the incidents had created fear and raised concerns about the safety of people living in the area.

The community also raised concerns over the alleged involvement of the Idowa traditional institution. It specifically mentioned the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adefuwape.

The Ikangba people stressed that they were not asking the government or security agencies to decide the ownership of the land outside the legal process.

Instead, they want the authorities to conduct a full and impartial investigation. They also want all parties to receive protection while the competent authorities determine the ownership and status of the property.

Appeal to Security Agencies

The community asked Governor Abiodun to prevent the use of security personnel or private agents to intimidate any party involved in the dispute.

It also appealed to the DSS and the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that their personnel do not become involved in private land disputes.

The residents further called on the Ogun State Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force, the police, DSS and other relevant agencies to act quickly.

They said urgent action could help prevent further violence and protect lives and property.

Women from Umuariaga community in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State have protested against an alleged plan by the state government to acquire their farmland for a proposed smart city housing estate without their consent.

The women stormed the Abia State Government House in Umuahia, expressing fears that losing the land would threaten their livelihoods and worsen hunger within their families.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mrs. Glory Orji alleged that individuals claiming to represent the Abia State Government had informed residents that the community’s flat lands had been designated for a housing estate project.

According to her, the development has created tension and uncertainty across the community.

The protesters said the farmland remains the primary source of food and income for many families in Umuariaga.

“This is the only flat land we have. If they collect it from us, what will remain for our children?” Orji asked.

“If they collect it from us, where are we going to farm and where are we going to feed our families from?” she added.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the women appealed to Governor Alex Otti to protect indigenous landowners from losing ancestral lands without proper consultation or agreement.

Herdsmen Crisis Also Raised

The women also complained about persistent destruction of crops by cattle allegedly belonging to herdsmen operating around the community.

They accused relevant government agencies of failing to adequately address the situation, saying farmers have continued to suffer repeated losses.

Tension is rising in Enugu State as host communities protest an alleged plan by the state government to convert part of a school land into a commercial housing estate.

Residents of Amauzam-Ugbawka and Agbani communities in Nkanu East Local Government Area staged a protest over reports that undeveloped portions of the Girls Special Science School, Agbani, have been earmarked for a housing project.

According to the communities, the disputed land spans Ugbawka Amauzam and Agbani and was acquired during the administration of former governor Chimaroke Nnamani without adequate consultation or clear boundary definition.

The protesters said repeated efforts to resolve the issue had yielded no results. They recalled writing to the administration of former governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in 2016, requesting a formal survey and clarification of the school’s boundaries.

They also noted that a similar appeal was made to the current administration in 2024, seeking either the return of unused land or compensation for affected families.

Although security personnel prevented the protesters from gaining access to the Government House, a petition outlining their grievances was submitted.

In the petition, community leaders expressed frustration over what they described as a breach of trust, alleging that earlier discussions around resizing the school land had now been replaced with plans for commercial development.

They urged the government to respect the provisions of the Land Use Act by engaging host communities, returning unutilised land, and compensating those whose lands had already been taken.

The Delta State Police Command has declared Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, a prominent community leader in Asaba, wanted following his alleged role in the killing of three youths during a land dispute.

SP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the suspect allegedly led an armed group that attacked residents in Okwe community, a suburb of Asaba, on November 24, 2025.

“The Delta Police Command has activated a full-scale manhunt for Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona Community, and all members of his armed group,” Edafe said.

According to the police, Nkeeshe and his associates, some disguised in army camouflage, attempted to enforce an unauthorized quit notice on the land without any court order. The confrontation led to indiscriminate gunfire, resulting in the deaths of three youths.

The police confirmed that the injured youths were taken to a nearby hospital but later died while receiving treatment.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, deployed tactical teams and intelligence operatives to track, identify, and arrest all individuals involved. The CP condemned the incident as a “reckless and unprovoked display of lawlessness” and assured that no one, regardless of title or influence, would escape justice.

The Chief Executive Officer of TEBAMS Gases and Allied Products Ltd, Taiwo Aremu, has accused a Chinese company, Sheng Xin Industrial Co. Ltd, of masterminding the demolition of his gas plant along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

Aremu said the demolition, allegedly carried out by the Ogun State Task Force, destroyed factory buildings, machines, and structures worth over ₦1bn between September 27 and 29, 2025.

He claimed the Chinese firm had harassed his company for months over a land dispute despite TEBAMS’ lawful acquisition and documentation. Aremu further alleged that the Ologere of Ogere, Oba James Saliu, aided the Chinese company in reselling the land.

However, the monarch and the Chinese firm denied the allegations, insisting they possess valid ownership documents, including a Certificate of Occupancy and a demolition permit from the state authorities.

The Asorogbe family, from whom Aremu said he bought the land, backed his claim, describing the king’s sale to the Chinese firm as illegal.

Aremu, who said he lost his retirement investment in the project, petitioned Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Attorney-General, urging the government to unseal his factory and order compensation.

The respondents named in the motion (M/11417/2025) include the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

In a significant ruling delivered on September 17, Justice Zubairu granted leave for judicial review via certiorari after examining the affidavits and legal submissions. “I have found substantial compliance with the law and rules of this court,” the judge remarked. “Accordingly, the application is granted as prayed.”

In a move to forestall any potential enforcement, the applicants additionally seek an interim injunction restraining the respondents, their officers, or agents from implementing or giving effect to the committee’s report or recommendations. This injunction will remain in place pending the full hearing and determination of the interlocutory motion.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has given Winhomes Global Services Limited seven days to provide evidence of its alleged $250 million investment in land affected by the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway or face petitions to the EFCC, DSS, and even the US Embassy.

Inspecting the site in Lagos on Monday, Umahi dismissed the company’s claims as misleading. “I have a document from Winhomes that says they bought 12 hectares of land in 2022 for the sum of N50 million. In this area, with all the development around, I don’t know if the villagers were terribly cheated or if due process was followed. Nigerians should ask questions,” he said.

The minister pointed to what he called substandard works on the site. “The only thing we destroyed was the gatehouse, for which the enumerator graciously gave her N19 million. The woman claimed she has invested $250 million. Not ₦250 million, but dollars. We cannot trace the money, the approvals, or the investors. If she really brought that amount, where is it? Show us through the CBN, show us who paid, and how much they paid. Otherwise, it is a fraud to me.”

Umahi demanded an apology and warned that without proof, the case would be escalated. “I’ll be writing to the Embassy of America to demand that they send the woman back to us so that she will come and tell us where the money is and how it left America to come to Nigeria,” he added.

Civil society representatives also challenged Winhomes’ narrative. Declan Hekare, who had earlier led protests, said: “What I am seeing here is below my expectations. I expected to see structures that were erected and pulled down. That is not the case. If by the end of two weeks, more evidence is not provided, we will address a world press conference. Nigerians cannot be misled.”

On the project, Umahi assured that the highway will be delivered under a 30 percent government and 70 percent private financing model, with concessionaires ready to fund construction.
