Residents and homeowners in Surulere Community, Amikanle, within Alimosho Local Council Area of Lagos, have raised alarm over the demolition of their properties, accusing suspected land grabbers of acting with police backing.

According to the residents, no fewer than 70 structures, including residential buildings, shops and perimeter fences, were pulled down during an enforcement exercise linked to Suit No: ID/732M/2010 between the Federal Housing Authority and Nurudeen Adewale & Bros (Nig) Ltd.

Some landlords claimed they were asked to pay as much as N55 million, while others were reportedly given demands of N30 million or N15 million.

Eyewitnesses said about 300 men stormed the community, presenting documents said to be from the housing authority authorising them to collect payments for property renewal. Residents alleged that those who failed to meet the payment demands saw their homes demolished.

Chairman of the Surulere Estate Community Development Area, Semiu Oladejo, accused officers from Zone 2 of the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Taskforce of supervising the exercise.

“They came with around 300 hoodlums. The Nigeria Police should not give protection to thugs and land grabbers. Officers from Zone 2 and the Taskforce watched our properties being destroyed,” he said.

Other residents described continued harassment. One affected resident, identified as Oluwafewa, said security operatives accompanied the alleged thugs for about two weeks.

He claimed the group demanded that landlords purchase a N100,000 form, pay an initial N5 million, and clear the balance within two weeks, with different payment amounts assigned to different houses.

Another resident said similar incidents had occurred in the past, alleging that a relative lost his property a decade ago after failing to meet such demands.

Responding to the allegations, Zone 2 Police spokesperson, Afolayan Gbenga, denied that officers worked with thugs, stating that police presence was only to enforce a court order.

“It is not possible that officers went with thugs; we don’t use thugs,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Zonal Manager of the Federal Housing Authority, Rekiya Sani, wrote to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, stating that the demolition carried out on January 27, 2026, at the FHA Estate in Abesan, Surulere, was done without the authority’s approval.

She noted that although the judgment was in favour of the agency, the execution supervised by the Lagos State Task Force was carried out without its knowledge and requested the immediate withdrawal of task force personnel from the estate.

Speaking at a government function in Little Rayfield, Jos, where he received reports from two high-level committees—one on land management and another on the resettlement of displaced persons—Governor Mutfwang described the current situation as untenable. He condemned the growing trend of individuals seizing land under the guise of abandonment, calling it both “uncultured” and “uncivilised.”

“Land is never just lying fallow. Every parcel has a story, a history, and an owner,” the governor asserted. “This administration is committed to restoring not just ownership, but dignity to those who have been uprooted.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to enforce an anti-land-grabbing law enacted during the tenure of his predecessor, Senator Simon Lalong. According to him, the legislation offers a legal pathway to address widespread concerns over illegal settlements, displacement, and asset seizure across Plateau’s rural and urban areas.

To back his words with action, the governor revealed that a special task force has already been constituted to begin identifying and retrieving state-owned properties currently in unauthorized hands. This effort will include documenting all disputed assets and verifying the legitimacy of current occupants.

Governor Mutfwang also referenced the long-standing issue of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the need to facilitate their return to ancestral lands. “For over two decades, many of our people have been forced away from their homes. These are not just places—they are sources of identity, memory, and meaning,” he said, underscoring the psychological impact of dislocation.

Challenging those who had previously accused him of exaggerating the extent of the displacement crisis, Mutfwang pointed to the committee’s report as validation. “We now have the data. If anyone disagrees with it, let’s go to those communities together. The truth is on the ground.”

The committee’s chairman, Air Commodore Christopher Pam (rtd.), shared recommendations from their findings, including the construction of 14 military and police outposts in high-risk areas, and the mobilization of both formal security forces and local vigilante groups to protect vulnerable communities.

On the question of land development and allocation, Mutfwang expressed concern over the growing number of unauthorized structures springing up on government plots. “We are seeing people build on state lands without any formal process. That will stop. There must be order,” he declared.

He also hinted at broader reforms that may involve collaboration with private developers. “There are estates built by government that are now in disrepair. We want to unlock the economic value of these assets by partnering with the private sector—this way, we revitalize these areas and generate revenue, all while addressing housing and land use challenges.”

Governor Mutfwang concluded by emphasizing that land issues in Plateau are more than just legal or administrative—they are deeply connected to identity, peace, and justice. His administration, he said, would not shy away from confronting the hard truths necessary to bring healing and order to the state.

The suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence indicating that they were obstructing lawful occupants from conducting their activities. Reports also revealed that the group allegedly assaulted Mr. Ashafa of Prestige Hotel, Ikeja, and arrived at the scene armed with dangerous weapons.

According to the Taskforce, the operation aligns with its mandate to curb land grabbing in Lagos, a practice that threatens development and deprives rightful owners of their properties.

Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who personally led the operation, issued a stern warning to individuals involved in land grabbing, emphasizing that the agency would not tolerate unlawful dispossession of properties in the state.

The arrested suspects were arraigned in court, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted them bail at ₦500,000 each, with two sureties per defendant—one of whom must be a civil servant not below Level 14, while the other must be a relative, a clergy member, or a community leader.

The case has been adjourned to March 26, 2025, for further proceedings.

The Lagos State Taskforce reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, urging residents to report any cases of land grabbing, violence, or intimidation to the appropriate authorities.

To combat fraudulent sales, the community has established a Land Committee to verify land ownership and ensure only legitimate transactions occur. Sir Godwin warned against wealthy individuals attempting to use their influence to claim communal lands illegally.

Developer Accused of Illegal Land Sale

The leaders accused a certain developer, known as Nwaguatahihia, of encroaching on Urum’s Ochiokwa Layout and advertising land for sale under the name ‘Nwaguatahihia Heaven Estate.’

“He apologized and withdrew from the land on January 17, 2025, but is now selling the same land on social media,” Godwin stated.

Public Disclaimer: Buyers Beware

The community declared that anyone purchasing land from the said developer does so at their own risk, as the Ochiokwa land remains reserved for farming and is not for sale.

“We urge prospective buyers to follow due process through the community’s land committee to avoid falling victim to fraud,” said Bro. Aron Okafor, Chairman of the Urum Land Committee.

Final Warning to Fraudulent Developers

The Vice Chairman of the committee, Nze Jude Ndibe, reaffirmed that Urum will not tolerate further encroachment, warning Nwaguatahihia and other land speculators to stay away from the land.

Traders under the Agbajowo Dealers and Artisans Market Association at Owode Onirin, Lagos State, have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene as land grabbers threaten to take over their legally allocated market space.

The association also urged Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and other government officials to step in and prevent the unlawful takeover of their trading site.

Chairman of the association, Engr. Thaddeus Idaewor, raised the alarm during a press conference held at the market over the weekend, stating that more than 5,000 traders risk losing their means of livelihood due to the planned demolition of the market.

According to Idaewor, despite assurances from lawmakers following their protest at the Governor’s Office and the State House of Assembly, no concrete action has been taken to halt the land grabbers.

“We are calling on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the State House of Assembly, and other relevant authorities to intervene before we are forcefully evicted. If over 5,000 traders lose their businesses, it will lead to untold hardship,” he said.

He also appealed to President Bola Tinubu, noting that the market plays a vital role in the local economy and should not be taken over by private interests.

Supporting the call, a member of the Elder’s Council, Moshood Tijani, confirmed that the market association possesses legal documents for the site.

“We heard rumors that the land grabbers are planning another move after their failed attempt last September. That’s why we are calling for urgent government intervention before it’s too late,” Tijani stated.

The traders remain on high alert, hoping for swift action from the authorities to safeguard their businesses and livelihoods.

“These individuals have turned land grabbing into a criminal enterprise,” Magaji said, emphasizing that all the lands targeted by these schemes are government properties. He clarified that the state government has no involvement in these fraudulent suits, as the entire process is orchestrated by syndicates looking to exploit legal loopholes.

The chairman commended the integrity of Department of State Service (DSS) officials, who resisted a bribe offer of 2.8 million Naira from one of the suspects during the arrest. Their steadfast refusal to compromise demonstrates the growing commitment to eradicating corruption in Kano State.

“We are here today at Sabon Lugbe Southwest area, which is part of the Phase Five district of the Federal Capital City (FCC), and recall that some time back, we warned that we were going to act against land grabbers. Today’s exercise is a continuation of that warning,” Galadima said.

“For any person to buy any property in Abuja, please ensure that it is a rightly titled property with an approved development plan. Failing to do so, you could fall into the hands of these land grabbers, and please, don’t blame the FCTA.”

The enforcement began with the demolition of about 10 structures an initial step in what Galadima described as a “full swing” operation set to continue. He noted that close to 50 illegal structures, including duplexes and bungalows, will be demolished as part of the ongoing crackdown.

Galadima warned that areas such as Idu Train Station, Gosa, Kyami, Apo Tarfi, and Lugbe have become hotbeds for land grabbing, and the FCTA would not tolerate illegal developments. “Today we are in Lugbe, and we will continue, as this is a continuous exercise. Illegal developments will not be entertained.”

In response to individuals who were deceived into believing they could be integrated into Phase Five of the FCC Masterplan, Galadima was firm: “There is nothing like integration. Illegality is illegality, and we will continue to remove these illegal structures.”

Regarding the upcoming Phase Five of the FCC and its integration into the Abuja Masterplan, Galadima reassured that work is ongoing. “I think the FCT Urban and Regional Planning is working hard on that.”

As the FCTA ramps up its efforts to reclaim illegally occupied land and restore adherence to the Abuja Masterplan, the public is urged to verify all property purchases and avoid falling victim to land grabbers. The warning is clear: illegal developments in the FCT will be met with swift action.

According to eyewitnesses, the invaders, numbering about 50 and armed with various weapons, including firearms, stormed the communities in the morning. They began shooting sporadically, causing panic among the residents who fled to safety.

One resident, Alfa, described the chaotic scene, stating that the armed men cordoned off the area, leading to the closure of businesses and shops.

It was later discovered that the invaders had stolen seven motorcycles belonging to commercial motorcyclists who had fled the area to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

Another resident, Saka Kolawole, took to social media to report that five communities, including Alapoti, Asipa, Alaagba, Olorunleke, and Olorunshola, were affected by the invasion, leading to a complete halt in business activities and movement in the area.

Responding to the incident, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Ogun State Governor, Emmanuel Ojo, assured that the state government would investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, stated that she had not been briefed on the incident. However, a senior police officer in the area confirmed the invasion but declined to provide further details, citing a lack of authority to speak to the press.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Ogun State, as similar cases of land grabbing have been reported in the past.

In February, six suspected landgrabbers were arrested in the Kajola area of the state, with locally made pistols and substances suspected to be Indian hemp recovered from them. The suspects had attacked a village, wielding dangerous weapons and intimidating villagers.
