The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced that it evacuated 418,500 tonnes of waste across Lagos State in May as part of a broader effort to strengthen sanitation and environmental cleanliness.

The agency said the intensified clean-up campaign was aimed at improving public hygiene, reducing indiscriminate waste disposal, and maintaining a healthier environment for residents across the state.

According to LAWMA, the waste evacuation exercise covered residential areas, markets, highways, and other public spaces in different parts of Lagos. The authority noted that its operations were carried out through a combination of direct intervention and collaboration with private sector operators responsible for waste collection.

The agency explained that the sustained evacuation drive forms part of the Lagos State Government’s strategy to improve urban sanitation and ensure cleaner communities. It added that increased monitoring and enforcement activities have also been introduced to discourage illegal dumping and non-compliance with environmental regulations.

LAWMA urged residents and businesses to support the sanitation campaign by disposing of waste properly, patronizing approved waste operators, and avoiding practices that contribute to environmental pollution.

The authority also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding waste management infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and promoting environmental sustainability across Lagos State.

Lagos, one of Africa’s largest cities by population, generates thousands of tonnes of waste daily, making effective waste management a critical public health and environmental priority for the state government and sanitation agencies.

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources plans to meet with Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators to tackle the city’s worsening waste management problems.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said the move aims to strengthen collaboration with local councils on waste, drainage, and environmental enforcement. He noted that some PSP operators have failed to meet collection standards.

“We’ll identify gaps and work with councils at the grassroots to fix them,” Wahab said.

He also warned against illegal land reclamation, stressing that only projects with drainage clearance and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would be allowed.

Meanwhile, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) arrested several residents in Akesan, Alimosho, for dumping refuse illegally. They were taken to the Task Force Office in Oshodi for prosecution.

The Lagos State Government has renewed its “Cash for Trash” programme, urging residents to convert household waste into cash as part of efforts to promote recycling and keep the city clean.

The initiative, managed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), allows residents to exchange recyclable waste, such as plastics and cans for money, turning waste management into a source of income while reducing the effects of climate change.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the relaunch in a statement and video shared on his X handle on Monday. He said the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Recycling Team is actively engaging communities on Lagos Island to demonstrate how waste can be monetized.

“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our LAWMA Recycling Team is showing residents how to make it happen,” Wahab said. “We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city.”

The accompanying video posted by the commissioner, showed LAWMA officials weighing bags of sorted plastic waste on portable scales and handing out cash rewards to participants, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a sustainable and circular economy.
