The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has initiated a massive corporate relief intervention by deploying millions of litres of Premium Motor Spirit at zero freight cost to selected destinations across Nigeria. Under the newly introduced logistics arrangement, the 650,000-barrel-per-day petrochemical facility will absorb the entirety of the distribution costs for product deliveries routed to the Federal Capital Territory and five selected states. The move is designed to stabilize domestic energy supply dynamics, dismantle arbitrary product pricing by logistical middlemen, and cushion the economic impact of fuel distribution bottlenecks on commuters.

According to reliable oil sector officials, the downstream distribution network will utilize dedicated trucking fleets to transport the fuel directly from the Lekki Free Trade Zone hub to major storage facilities in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Enugu, and Borno. By neutralizing the structural transportation fees that marketers typically pass down to end-users, the refinery aims to establish a uniform price corridor at retail points across these major geographic zones. Industry observers note that the initiative challenges the traditional freight-pooling systems managed under state equalization structures, offering an independent private sector template for regional energy security.

The specialized shipping exercise is expected to run concurrently with the refinery’s broader supply agreements with independent and major oil marketers across the federation. Downstream analysts suggest that this direct intervention will exert downward pressure on pump prices in distant northern and eastern territories, which have historically suffered from high handling costs. The petrochemical conglomerate emphasized that enhancing affordable access to critical transport fuels remains a core component of its national development support strategy, provided local distribution pipelines and logistics operations remain unhindered.

The Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) has commended the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for taking giant steps towards establishing a Building Materials Hub in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos.

The initiative, which aligns with one of the key agenda items discussed at this year’s AIHS, is expected to transform the housing sector by lowering construction costs and boosting affordable housing delivery across the country.

Coordinator of AIHS, Festus Adebayo, praised the ministry under the leadership of Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa for championing such a visionary project. According to him, “This is a brilliant idea that will encourage local production of building materials, reduce dependence on imports, and make housing more affordable for Nigerians. It is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to implementing the solutions stakeholders pushed for at AIHS.”

Recall that during a recent official tour to Lekki Free Trade Zone, Dangiwa disclosed that the ministry plans to establish six Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs across the six geo-political zones of the country. He revealed that an investor has already been secured for the Lekki project, which will significantly cut Nigeria’s housing deficit by facilitating large-scale local production of building materials.

“The hub will promote local content, curb rising costs, encourage domestic production, and ensure sustainable housing delivery nationwide,” the Minister stated.

The Minister further explained that the presence of intermodal transport infrastructure in Lekki, including a seaport, airport, rail, and road networks, makes the zone a perfect choice for the hub. These facilities, he noted, not only guarantee the hub’s effectiveness but also attract real estate investments, as the rising demand for housing will naturally support the massive industrial and commercial developments taking shape in the area.

Similarly, Adeniyi Akinlusi, MD/CEO of Lekki Worldwide Investments Ltd, emphasized that the free zone was designed to stimulate economic growth, reduce import dependency, attract investment, create jobs, and boost housing opportunities.

AIHS commended Lekki Worldwide Investments for providing a strategic site for the Federal Government’s Building Materials Manufacturing Hub within the zone.

Adebayo also noted that the minister’s proactive move marks a major step forward in implementing recommendations raised by housing stakeholders, reinforcing confidence that Nigeria is on the right track to making housing accessible and affordable for all.

A major step toward lowering the cost of housing construction in Nigeria is underway, as plans have been finalized to establish a dedicated building materials hub within the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos.

The initiative, covering 200 hectares of land, is expected to drive down production costs, boost local content, and strengthen domestic manufacturing of essential building inputs.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed the plan on Thursday during an inspection tour of industrial clusters in the Lekki and Lagos Free Zones, which form part of the wider ecosystem connected to the Lekki Deep Sea Port. His tour included visits to housing projects, industrial sites, materials testing laboratories, Alaro City, Lagos Coastal City, and the seaport.

According to Dangiwa, the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and will be replicated across the six geopolitical zones, with Lagos serving as the pioneer location.

“The building materials hub will promote local content, curb rising costs of materials, encourage domestic production, and ensure sustainable housing delivery nationwide,” he said.

The minister revealed that an investor has already been secured for the project, which is expected to generate jobs, reduce dependence on imported materials, and help close Nigeria’s housing deficit. He also emphasized that intermodal infrastructure linking the seaport, airport, rail, and road networks would enhance the hub’s efficiency.

During his visit to Alaro City, Dangiwa commended the developers for adopting sustainable building practices that complement the federal government’s drive to expand affordable housing through public-private partnerships (PPPs).

The Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investments Ltd, Adeniyi Akinlusi, welcomed the project and highlighted the 16,500-hectare Lekki Free Trade Zone as a catalyst for investment, job creation, and real estate development. “The whole zone is Nigeria’s best-kept investment secret,” he noted.

Industry leaders also showcased power plants, factories, and other projects within the zone, reinforcing the area’s role as a growing hub of industrial and real estate activities.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, is taking giant steps to establish a Building Materials Hub aimed at slashing construction costs and driving the delivery of affordable mass housing across Nigeria.

As part of this process, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, will be visiting the Lekki Free Trade Zone tomorrow, Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The visit is expected to provide firsthand insights into the opportunities available within the zone, which is being reviewed as one of the possible locations for the hub.

According to Festus Adebayo, Executive Director of the Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN), the group will be accompanying the Minister during the visit as part of its ongoing advocacy for lower building material costs and wider access to affordable housing.

Also joining the delegation is Mr. Niyi Akinlusi, Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investments Limited, who will host the team and provide updates on developments within the zone.

The Ministry’s plan for a Building Materials Hub is aimed at tackling rising construction costs, encouraging local manufacturing, and making housing delivery more sustainable.

The initiative involves establishing manufacturing hubs in six locations across its geo-political zones: Sagamu (South West), Aba (South East), Warri/Asaba (South South), Ajaokuta (North Central), Kano (North West), and Gombe (North East). These hubs will focus on producing materials like roofing sheets, ceilings, tiles, and doors, with plans to attract investors to fund and manage the projects.

While the visit to Lekki is exploratory, officials say the project when eventually sited will be designed to attract investment, reduce import costs, create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen the housing and construction sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
